100 years and 2 days on, Celtic aim for another record

390

Fate intervenes in football regularly. Friday, 21 April, marks the 100th anniversary of Celtic’s UK record of 62 league games unbeaten finally ending. Willie Maley’s team won 49 of the 62 games, but took their eye off the ball on the second last game of a long season, at home to Kilmarnock.

The run stood as a European record for 70 years until the great Steaua Bucharest European Cup winning team eclipsed it.

While we will remember one of the early great Celtic teams, with Patsy Gallacher, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy, thoughts inevitably turn to the tantalising prospect of an unbeaten record which would be just as incredible – that of an invincible domestic treble.

100 years and two days after Maley’s team’s great run came to an end, Brendan Rodgers’ team put their aspirations on the line in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. The weight of history will not burden Brendan or the players, but Sunday is a great opportunity to mark the passing of one incredible record by setting your sights on another.

Great records happen at Celtic. It’s time for another one.

I’ve no axe to grind with Dundee one way or another. Completely understood the decision to sack Paul Hartley. Whatever was going on, the prospect of relegation after losing a play-off against Dundee United was looming large, but good grief, appointing a rookie from the television!

Apart from saying, “Don’t take tax advice from an adult film producer”, I can’t imagine what else he will tell the players with any authority.

    Ha that’s brilliant.

Isn’t is strange that stories like that never make the MSM.

So far tonight, it looks like Rubentus have paid the ref the most.

He’s not falling for the Barca a dives.

    Hail Hail

In Spanish bar at the moment and old Spanish guy beside me has been very animated throughout the first half of the Barca match. Been speaking to him at half time. No hablo mucho Espagnol and he doesn’t speak any Irish but it turns out he is a Real Madrid supporter and wants Rubentus to win. Was complimentary about Celtic (I think) when I showed him my jacket.

Stretch isnt great with his back to goal imo but with the play in front of him he gets to show his strengths.

Among those are the runs he can make. He can ghost into dangerous areas from that deep position which can cause havoc as often, they are not picked up.

His shooting is also very good and hes benefitting from joining in the attack and picking up chances around the penaly box.

He has arguably been the player of the season since he took over the position held by Bitton so keep him there!

Jimmynotpaul, just checked the Pollok site. They beat Cumbernauld on penalties in the first round of the central league cup . It was 1 1 after 90 minutes .

Pollok won this cup last season , winning 7 1 in the final. I think Tony enjoyed that scoreline

  9. BT: didn’t see him on Sunday. I’ll be in Timmys (Torreblanca) tomorrow night for the under 20 match or up in Torremolinas.

  10. Looks like the Juve are going through, consolation being that the totty in their stands at home games has to be up their with the best in Europe

Hard to believe that this is the same Barca team that, only a few years ago, played the most beautiful football …. I think that the golden age of Barca football may be on the wain …still play some nice stuff, but that final killer pass/perfectly timed run, that we are used to seeing from Barca, just isn’t there tonight..

mind you, a lot of credit has to go to Juve ….those Italians know how to defend better than anyone … and they work so well as a team …

I would have liked to see Barca score a few, if only to make the game more interesting …. but doesn’t look too likely

Monaco look like a fun team … they play nice stuff, and it would be good to see someone other than one of the ‘big clubs’ win …. (I know, one of the richest clubs from one of the richest areas in the world, and they aren’t one of the ‘big clubs!)

Did you hear about the goal that Maryhill’s Stokes scored against Clydebank. Recorded at under 3 seconds, straight from kick off.

  13. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Delaney’s, a pal of mine goes to all the Bankies games he can .

He s totally mortified and embarassed about that Maryhill goal and the fact Maryhill played that game for over an hour with ten men , winning 3 nil.

I text him a few days later to say sky sports news were showing it

If I repeated his response on here, I would get ten red cards.

  14. Mullet and Co.

Res12 had nothing to do with the DOS ebts. Nothing.

Res12 did not hit the buffers. It arrived at the only destination where the journey could continue. Celtic

There it will lie unless folk have an appetite to force an answer because it will not come without pressure.

On Juhino there is no equivalence whatsoever. Paying a player by ebts and hiding the true nature of the transaction was not a matter of Club policy to remunerate players as it was at Ibrox.

If the ebt came with Juhino as I understand it did then keeping it would be part of the contract and there is no indication whatsoever Juhino demanded a side letter in order to entice him to sign.

If Celtic did not report the J ebt to the SFA then it would be on the same basis that LNS accepted from RFC as an oversight by Celtic not an attempt to gain sporting advantage.

On that basis there is no question whatsoever for a points deduction particularly as the oversight, if indeed it was such, was dealt with honestly and not hidden.

So going by your reply to Mullet Res12 is lying dormant unless there is a substantial amount of supporters of Celtic demanding the board act on the info they now have?
