100 years and 2 days on, Celtic aim for another record

390

Fate intervenes in football regularly. Friday, 21 April, marks the 100th anniversary of Celtic’s UK record of 62 league games unbeaten finally ending. Willie Maley’s team won 49 of the 62 games, but took their eye off the ball on the second last game of a long season, at home to Kilmarnock.

The run stood as a European record for 70 years until the great Steaua Bucharest European Cup winning team eclipsed it.

While we will remember one of the early great Celtic teams, with Patsy Gallacher, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy, thoughts inevitably turn to the tantalising prospect of an unbeaten record which would be just as incredible – that of an invincible domestic treble.

100 years and two days after Maley’s team’s great run came to an end, Brendan Rodgers’ team put their aspirations on the line in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. The weight of history will not burden Brendan or the players, but Sunday is a great opportunity to mark the passing of one incredible record by setting your sights on another.

Great records happen at Celtic. It’s time for another one.

I’ve no axe to grind with Dundee one way or another. Completely understood the decision to sack Paul Hartley. Whatever was going on, the prospect of relegation after losing a play-off against Dundee United was looming large, but good grief, appointing a rookie from the television!

Apart from saying, “Don’t take tax advice from an adult film producer”, I can’t imagine what else he will tell the players with any authority.

Boure, nice description of the Rube strip.

The two league titles taken from them when the authorities finally got round to dealing with that club , are still listed as being won by them in their roll f dishonour.

Lichsteiner is the perfect player for them.

  2. Sorry to see what looks loke the demise of a great football team. Juventus have made agreat case for geriatric defenders who have proved to everyone you are never too old if you are good enough.

Thunder Road, I can’t claim the glory for the Tommy Burns information, it was on etims twitter.

My main memory of Tommy’s debut was that it was the first game I was allowed to go to without either my brother, sister or my dad taking me. She also insisted I went to the front stand and not go to the Jungle which was populated with drunken foul mouthed louts according to her

  4. Dallas.

    Yes,thanks for that!!!.

Paddy scored for Cumbernauld in normal time, Pollok equalised early in the second half with a really dodgy penalty (his unbiased opinion).

He didn’t take a penalty, that confused me, but he said he was hobbling a bit so didn’t fancy it.

I had a couple of shillings on Monaco at 15/8 tonight.

    Hail Hail

I hope Juve go the whole way and lift the cup, for no other reason than I think that no one deserves a CL medal more than Buffon.

You were a genius for your ‘I predict a riot’ comment a while ago but obviously yer ole memory has let it slip away!

Anyway…..it was a good heads up earlier about today being the anniversary of the beginning of Tommy’s Celtic career and i was a bit surprised that it slipped through without comment so thanks for mentioning it.

Its funny how wee daft things get remembered, but 1 of my Dads favourite memories of Tommy was when he went after a ball that appeared to be running aimlessly out the park as he recognised there was a glimmer of a chance that it was perhaps going to hit the corner flag and in being alert enough to see that possibility and having the work ethic to go after it…..he was 1st to it and then crossed for us to score.

  10. Borussia were a very good side tonight, but every time Monaco come forward they look like they will score. Scary!

Barcas system was sussed a long time ago.

Compact area between defense and midfield and those short triangular passes are difficult to make.

It also makes them vulnerable defensively as if they turn the ball over the defense has about 2/3 of the field to cover.

    They don’t have a plan B.

Man std with a vastly inferior team beat them 1-0 over two legs in 2008 doing exactly that.

They are not great unless teams allow it.We played into their hands as others have done at the Nou camp.It was a learning experience for Brendan. If we met them next season i would expect us to compete.

Unless they get a forward thinking coach they won’t be once in Europe as that systems defunct.

How you doing, mate? How is life in Trumpland? Thinking about escaping north yet? :)

I dont disagree. I think that whenever someone comes up with a new system (which, in a fashion, Barca did), and has success with it, teams either copy it, or figure out how to combat it.

And, I think the loss/aging of Xavi was a major factor …(along with Iniesta aging) …. the front three is still maybe the best forward line I have ever seen, but they aren’t getting the killer passes they way the barca forwards once did …

If, as rumored, Messi does leave …. what will the future hold for Barca? I really dont like the thought of Real dominating ….

I assume that the next coach would have to be spanish.. (they seem to like continuity) …. but I dont see enough of the spanish games now to know who would be likely to take over …

but, as you say, the end of an era …. we were fortunate to have seen that Barca team at their pomp…. some days, they were an absolute joy to watch.

Thunder Road , thanks for your generous words.

That picture Roy Croppie posted of George McLuskey celebrating his goal in the 1980 final was perfect for a t shirt with I predict a riot on it, which you dually delivered.

Tommy is and always will be one of my football icons , as a man and player.

Tommy ‘s goal in our league winning game at Tannadice In 1981 along with his second half performance in the league winning match the following season are my second and third favourite memories of him.

My favourite was him breaking off from the team’s celebrations after winning the league in 1982 to go and meet our disabled fans who used to park their wee blue trike cars behind the goal at the Rangers(IL) end.

    We weren’t very good!

Just a bunch of young lads that wanted to play fitba so we put a team together.

Our keeper had a day to forget against them in 1 of the games. As you will know it can be a bit windy on that coastline and he badly misjudged a few long high balls and they ended up sailing over his head into the vacant net.

He probably still has nightmares about it now!

Still…..they were great days for us and we always had a good night afterwards!

Delaney’s , I believe my fellow Drumchapeler, Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, has backed a plan to upgrade Holm Park into a community stadium with emphasis on community .

Yoker and Clydebank have been pushing for council assistance to improve the ground.

It would be good if it came to fruition.

  25. Thinking about the referee and other officials on Sunday and hoping they will be an inspiration and not an excuse.

Cheating bassas they may be, but the only response to that is keep the balk, run the legs off every Hun on the park and ram it right up them.

    Goals goals goals.

We are better all over the pearl. That’s a fact. No excuses. Better fitness, match the effort – let the quality tell and we’ll hump them.

The only thing that can beat Celtic on Sunday is Celtic.

I believe there is a plan to build a stadium at Whitecrook. A multi purpose share for all Clydebank clubs for Rugby, Football and GAA matches, in a seated stadia for a few thousand. The new bridge to Renfrew will run over Holm Park. :))

So going by your reply to Mullet Res12 is lying dormant unless there is a substantial amount of supporters of Celtic demanding the board act on the info they now have?

    ======

I think the greater the number who want a resolution to the Resolution the greater the chance of getting one.

The dynamic at play will be about doing what is right v the number of supporters demanding such.

The more who demand an honest game the greater the chance action will be taken to achieve it.

Delaney’s , I heard someone in work mentioning a bridge from Cydebank /Yoker to Renfrew was being planned.

It would need to be quite high as a few ships still come up the Clyde and dock at Shieldall in addition to the ships or parts of ships built at Yarrows and Govan , to get under it.

I knew Lawrence , his brothers Danny and James when I was younger . James stayed in East Kilbride for a while , one of sons played in the same team as my son.
