100 years and 2 days on, Celtic aim for another record

390

Fate intervenes in football regularly. Friday, 21 April, marks the 100th anniversary of Celtic’s UK record of 62 league games unbeaten finally ending. Willie Maley’s team won 49 of the 62 games, but took their eye off the ball on the second last game of a long season, at home to Kilmarnock.

The run stood as a European record for 70 years until the great Steaua Bucharest European Cup winning team eclipsed it.

While we will remember one of the early great Celtic teams, with Patsy Gallacher, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy, thoughts inevitably turn to the tantalising prospect of an unbeaten record which would be just as incredible – that of an invincible domestic treble.

100 years and two days after Maley’s team’s great run came to an end, Brendan Rodgers’ team put their aspirations on the line in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. The weight of history will not burden Brendan or the players, but Sunday is a great opportunity to mark the passing of one incredible record by setting your sights on another.

Great records happen at Celtic. It’s time for another one.

I’ve no axe to grind with Dundee one way or another. Completely understood the decision to sack Paul Hartley. Whatever was going on, the prospect of relegation after losing a play-off against Dundee United was looming large, but good grief, appointing a rookie from the television!

Apart from saying, “Don’t take tax advice from an adult film producer”, I can’t imagine what else he will tell the players with any authority.

    Moonbeams, thanks for that link.

    An interesting read.

The Clyde shopping centre is right to be concerned about losing custom to Braehead if a bridge is built.

The centre of Paisley has suffered greatly since Braehead and Silverburn opened.

  4. Those posters who hope that Juve win the Champs League for Buffon’s sake need to have a word with themselves. I too greatly admire Gianluigi but he chooses to continue playing for the ultimate cheats FC. Twice we (Celtic) have met this mob in European competition. Back in the 80s when Liam Brady played for them, they beat us in Turin by 2-0 after we won 1-0 at Celtic Park. Softer the match hundreds of Celtic supporters were attacked by their thuggish fans. Some of our fans were slashed, others hit by bicycle chains and many beaten up. Some of our fans were elderly.

More recently, we witnessed the behaviour of their players at Celtic Park when they beat us 3-0. Who will ever forget the behaviour of their defenders at free kicks and corner kicks, particularly Lichtsteiner. They were a disgrace and the referee did nothing to stop them. I mention the referee because Juventus have form their too. They have had titles stripped from them for match fixing. They are a reprehensible club who will stop at nothing to win. They probably bought the ref who did nothing to stop their cheating at Celtic Park. I am only sorry that their name already appears on the CL trophy.

If Buffon played for almost any other team than Juventus then I would certainly wish him every success. I hope they get scudded in the semi final.

On the second part of your post the fact is Celtic and all of the SPL Board were told about the true nature of the DOS ebts in 2014.

However as it is principly an SPFL matter there has been no focus on Celtic to act and since the possibility that all ebts might be ruled irregular then it makes sense to wait for that to materialise.

However you are correct when you say there is no need to wait for BTC outcome and the danger in terms of justice, is that should the SC find for MIH then the 2003 title won when De Boer was paid by an irregular ebt in 2002 will be overlooked.

Regardless of the SC Decision, LNS was a sham designed to produce a desired result that could not have been contested had the existence of the De Boer letter not surfaced and been drawn to the attention of SPL lawyers Harper Macleod by the Scottish Football Monitor .

Occasional visitor – and long time lurker – these days – set to be less so as the political stuff increases in the run up to the general election.

Have to say THEORIGINALSAUIESBHOY post regarding Lichtsteiner is 100% spot on – this guy got away with so much cheating over 2 legs against us I really really hope Juve get pumped out asap. I know he’s not a regular starter but he’s still with them.

Still… in pure football terms Juventus played really well, they defended brilliantly but also had a fair share of possession and threatened when they did. Noticed the usual bt sport pundits went on about commitment and organisation and etc etc but ranieri, still not very articulate in English, singled out Khedira and Panic as the match winners for Juventus.

This is the level we want to be at.

So we got Francos fascists and the embodiment of corruption in football, the Ruben Ayala modern day Argentinian specials, the Juventus cheats d’Italia or somebody else. I’ll go for somebody else. I hope they win. Fat chance.

On the topic of fascists I see that the leader of the UK corporate front has called a snap election on hearing that

    a) Labour are about to dump Corbyn therefore any other Labour leader might win later

    b) forces the SNP to risk their 53 seats and put brexit on the map and indyref off the map.

    c) will coalesce the English masses into a coherent uneducated seething mass of bigotry and hatred ripe for milking.

I’m just back on and done a little read back.

Yes i am happy to do “Homers” ( takes me back to my electrician days…previous life !).

I’m not up to speed on this telephone scam that’s been reported on here, but if SOMEHOW Celtic have been “hacked”, or have inadvertently provided fans details to a “Third Party”, then obviously Celtic should be alerted at once ?

I would need to know more but I would suggest that there are some splendid chaps on here, more brainy than I am who could help with this possible problem, especially if Celtic have been unknowingly involved ?

My advice at this stage is probably the same as others…tell them to go throw shite at the moon !

There is the other advice that you can tell these companies that call, ” please hold the line, as your call is very important to us/me” ? Then walk away leaving them hanging on, they will soon get fed up ?

I have in the past demanded to know how they got my number ? when you continually ask them that, they can not and/or refuse to answer, and they sometimes hang up.

I have also advised them that as I did not agree to such a call, I want the FULL NAME of the caller, and the company involved including post code etc, in order that I can report them to Trading Standards Authority ( There may another agency that deals with this ?)

Sorry if I have just stated the obvious.

Can anyone tell me what the abbreviation ” AGCR” on here means ? I have seen it many times, but I do not have a clue ?

    Cheers.

  17. I am all for free speech, and enjoy reading many topics on here, including Politics, despite not agreeing on some political views.

Other political views do not influence me, as I suppose that once my mind is made up…that’s it.

Some of the other topics/Views outwith football are very informative on here and I for one welcome that.

i suppose on the Political Front, if many cqners are fed up with that subject, then maybe a separate thread once a week is the answer ? For those not wishing to read anything about Politics just steer clear of that thread…simples ?

Then again, what do I know I’m sure Paul could look at the situation IF it merits it ?

if we had a Politician or former Celtic Politician on the Celtic Board, as before with Dr Reid……there may be conflict as to what thread that should be posted on, should that particular Celtic Board member, make some form of political statement in his role as a Board member….Tricky ?

The feckin only folk that I’ve spoken to in recent weeks is Judges/Sheriffs…and feckin lawyers !

I do not like Juve for the reasons previously stated on here, I hope that YOKER gub them in the semi of the CL….i used to live in Yoker in the 1980’s/ early 1990’s for a few years.

    The Joker fae Yoker !

In the 1960’s the Yoker Ferry would operate from Yoker to Renfrew , and back again obviously, and my older cousin would take us on it for a wee trip so that we could drink beer and smoke fags illegally on the Renfrew riverbank.

To go on the Yoker/Renfrew Ferry it cost ” TUPPENCE” ! ( thanks old money ) each way.

For those on here too young to remember pre decimalsation, that’s approx….1 and a half new pence” ( I think ?)

Obviously there has been no Half New Pence for some time now, but going Decimal was one of the biggest financial cons ever by any Government.

The money in peoples pockets was directly devalued.

    Good Morning One and All.

Juventus, The Old Lady of Turin, leaves me cold as a football club. Over the years they have had many great players but I could never warm to them and any team that fixes a match by bunging the referee is not for me.

Barca will decline unless there is a change and a review of their structure and outlook from the very top. They need to bring in a Cruyff like figure who can manage their football, their ethos and their ability to attract players beyond the production of their massive chequebook.

Whoever that is, it won’t be me though I was the secretary of Yoker Athletic for quite a few years I think.

Re Res 12 — Hmmmm makes me think about a golf ball which has been putted up to the crest of a hill and then virtually comes to a stop but then slowly……. slowly……. starts to roll at an angle towards the pin with Peter Alliss going “Hang on, Hang on ……. oops….oops….oops…….”.

We are at the crest of a hill and the wind is just getting up behind the ball possibly.

Bobby, thanks for that post about one of the Brothers Grimm and that great Dundee United team.

Like most of us in the early eighties I loathed Aberdeen and United as both were thretening to us.

Now older and maybe wiser , I can appreciate how good United were.
