11 short days before CL duty

836

Work ahead of the new season is underway in earnest after Celtic came through a game in Austria against top flight Russian club FC Krasnodar in Austria yesterday afternoon.  Every hour has to be carefully planned from now on.

Ronny Deila has only 11 days before taking to an Icelandic field on Champions League duty.  Players need to step up, from 45 minutes against a fellow-preseason team, to 90 minutes of competitive action against a team who are already midseason.  Pushing muscles too hard now will be counterproductive; players need a planned gradient of training, rest and games to get them as close to peak condition as possible.  No matter how well this goes, the players will be short of their peak for weeks.

Trying hard not to think or talk about signings but it’s good to see Craig Gordon confirmed.  Fraser Forster is the most committed professional at the club, so he’s not a player who needs to be driven to improve, but we all need fresh incentives to go back to the well again, and the arrival of Craig will give Fraser fresh focus after returning from a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Welcome to Celtic, Craig.

There are around 36 CQNers already out on Aberdour Golf Course in what could be described as ‘fresh’ conditions.  A great night lies ahead.

Preacepta thanks but Marrakesh was bang on with Marinho.

When I was trying to remember his name, the surname Mourinho kept on popping up. I was on the right track but not close enough.

Etims twitter has a photo of what could be our new third strip. It looks pretty good.

I was in Costco last week and spotted a young hoops fan had the new tartan style top on. It looks better close up than it does in pictures.

    Praecepta, my apologies.

Apart from bad results we have had, that 1974 Brazil team disappointed me the most with the tactics and lack of football in comparison to four years earlier.

  4. I was in Germany during the 2006 World Cup.

There was nothing like the expectation levels or the public pressure on the German team as there is on the Brazil team at this World Cup.

It’s a struggle for them at times, but the fact that they’re in the semi-final shows that they’ve handled it.

I’m not sure if the pressure on them will ease having got to this advanced stage, or whether it’ll get worse, being so close to making up for the ‘disaster’ of 1950.

I was at the 0-0 game in Germany (long story how I got there) – Scotland should have won. Bremner often gets the blame for the near post miss – but there were a number of scoring chances scorned.

One of many glorious non-results! :-(

Didn’t Davie Hay hit the bar with a 25 yard rocket in that game too?

  7. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Praecepta, our very own Davie Hay was magnificent in that game, he was no respector ( is tehre such a word) of reputations.

The ball fell so quickly to Billy, it looked like he couldn’t adjust his feet to get cleaner contact with the ball.

That squad was the best Scotland have had in my mind, even taking into account Danny being moved to left back, but still couldn’t qualify from the group

    I hope Germany beat Brazil

In my opinion the referee did not treat both teams equally.

Would Colombia have had a better chance tonight if Falcao was fit to play?

Age catching up with me – but IIRC Scotland should’ve beat Brazil comfortably that night. We had a number of Poles in our section that night (armed with local vodka) – memories are now somewhat hazy!

  13. SFTB,

I haven’t said anything, but I’ve been disappointed by Brasil this year (as well?)

Watching tonight, they played with an urgent arrogance.

I tried to establish the qualities they missed that made me like Brasil so much in my life.

They had great ball control. That was it.

From what I’ve seen, I’d like to see Germany or Holland win this. Holland would be in with a good shout if they didn’t rely so much on professional penalty misser Jahen bassa Robben.

  14. Just in from pub having watched the game. Everyone was supporting Colombia. Everyone was sickened by the referee. Mark my words – Brazil will win the world cup with the officials they’ve had in every game. The great Brazilians must be turning in their graves to see such a thuggish display!

  15. SOAL

Can never forget – we were on the terracing but in small penned sections. Barricades (crash-bars); front, back and right as we looked at the pitch.

The Poles (in obligatory trench-coats) infiltrated the section – coats were opened to reveal an array of (home-brewed) vodka and barter took place.

Long night – my wife assumed I was at Celtic Park when I told her I was off to the game that night. Not too pleased when I reappeared the next day!

  17. Breaking news:

Brazil superstar Neymar is set to miss the remainder of the World Cup with a broken vertebrae, according to team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.

The 22-year-old, who had carried his country to the quarter-finals, was stretchered off in the closing stages of Friday’s 2-1 win over Colombia and taken to hospital. And Lasmar told local media in Brazil that Neymar will not kick another ball at the finals.

  18. •-:¦:-•**• -:¦:- sparkleghirl :¦:-.•**• -:¦:-• on

Apprently brasilian press reporting Neymar has fractured vertebrae and won’t play again this world cup.

Despite my reservations about his sense of fair play this is very sad news.

  19. •-:¦:-•**• -:¦:- sparkleghirl :¦:-.•**• -:¦:-• on

This has just been a really horrible day.

  20. praecepta

    ———-

I doubt that, no way those horrible Brazilians were hurt by those dainty Colombians.

** moves Neymar out of his FF team and frees up £8mill

  21. Sad to say from a football point of view – wouldn’t miss Neymar….or “Hulk”.

Is it just me, or are they not a patch on the Brasil of old?? They annoy me.

What’s been interesting from what I’ve seen of this competiton so far is the team play of teams that shouldn’t be there.

And what makes it ugly is that this competiton has not been allowed to develop freely. The big teams must stay in the competition, as per the CL.

As Celtic fans some of us understandably fantasize about a revolution in football. Mibbes the Celtic Board are right, and the authority loving board fans are right as well.

Or mibbes we should be more exciting and lead the way in starting a brand new European football league where rules are respected and fairness and competition leading to good football are the objectives…..

Ah. Scrap that last paragraph, ffs. There’s too much money to be made from corporate ST holders paying top dollar out of blind loyalty to their football club.

In 10 years, we’ll be reading about how Celtic Supporters contributed to the downfall of football with their blind, undemanding loyalty to the authoritarians who controlled the game, when we were in a position to revolutionise the game.

    This is the feckin tragedy.

We need more supporters challenging the authority of those that have hijacked our club.

  22. Neymar (diving aside and not as prevalent since he first arrived at Barca):

Have watched the lad tackle (and ride them) – has wonderful change of feet. Drops back – spreads play – has great vision. Would be a shame (Broonie stupid flick-out aside) if he is ruled out of the World Cup.

Not my favourite player – but you can’t ignore talent!

  23. •-:¦:-•**• -:¦:- sparkleghirl :¦:-.•**• -:¦:-• on

Luck/fate/chance, call it what you will, life is very cruel sometimes.

Neymar out, – and let’s hope he’s only out for the WC and that it’s not more serious.

And with Falcao and Ribery fit we might have been looking at a very different final.

I’m going to log out before I have a drink. Feeling a bit maudlin

  24. praecepta.

He has talent. But it stops there imo. The same applies to several of them. But they’re not a team.

I wonder if they could be. Is the current Brasil team an example of how the game has been ruined by money and corruption in recent years? Even Scolari can’t get a quality unit out of the best footballing squad in the world.

I think evidence of this is that the smaller countries were competing well, when organised. I found the Brasil team irritating to watch tonight – they had some kind of arrogant entitlement in their attitude in my mind, not their fault, believing and trying to prove that they are worthy of their predecessors. But not a patch. I haven’t wanted a team to lose since I last watched us play the huns.

  25. •-:¦:-•**• -:¦:- sparkleghirl :¦:-.•**• -:¦:-•

Me too – but vino has been consumed.

    G’night all. H!H!

  26. northerncelt67 on

I agree with most people on here about this particular Brazil side, they simply aren’t a patch on previous Brazil world cup teams. They lack flair and imagination.

I watched the game in a pub and most people were cheering on Colombia. Everyone was fed up at how lenient the referee was and like all the refs involved in each of Brazils games thus far, he was determined to ensure they won the tie.

Most people have Brazil down as their second favourite footballing nation but I really hope Germany send them packing in the semis.

Somehow I cant see it happening…..

  27. Boa noite.

Confirmed Neymar oot for the rest of the WC with a fractured 3rd vertebrae ( or so the news says here).

Add that to the fact that Thiago Silva is suspended for the SF ( amongst other things he keeps Davi Luiz in check, defensively) and it’s looking like a Deutschland stroll to the Final.

    Yours fae Rio

Would Colombia have had a better chance tonight if Falcao was fit to play?

    ==========================

I think Colombia would have won the World Cup if Falcao had been fit.

That extra bit of class up top would have made the crucial difference. Their general team pattern was excellent and their flair and ability the best of the South American teams; only missed the finishing abilities/defence worrying presence of Falcao to cap it all off.

The Spanish referee was very weak, crumbled in the face of Brazilian intimidation.

Brazil have disappointed; an average team riding a wave of national fervour, gaining all the home advantages going. Neymar, the wee dick, has impressed beyond expectations and almost appeared to have manned-up. The sad fact that I still can’t tell when he’s been genuinely injured tells me he’s not worth redemption yet.

I’d expect the Germans to slap them back to reality and win by a couple.

Messi to spark Argentina finally into a proper performance, ditch the dour Belgians, pump the egotistical over-rated Dutch in the semi and play a classic toe-to-toe with the Germans in a final decided in extra time by the wee man’s magic against tired legs.

That’s about the only scenario that’ll get me some dough back from the bookies. ;))

  29. TheBarcaMole on

Fernandhino is a less than adequate player in an average Brasil side but still a cynical thug IMHO and that (for me) says it all re the current Brasil team… Just my wee tuppenceworth! Cheers… TBM

  30. FFS. Is it really going to be a mind-numbing, disappointing Bra v Arg final??

I’ll be backing Germany and Holland over them. Would never have thought this for a minute. WTF is going on?? Is it me, or is it the fitbaw?? :)

Holland on their game are outstanding to watch and are en education for everyone else – but they obviously have issues with Robben. He makes them, breaks them, and imo takes the brown envelope when it comes to it.

Germany – efficient, and the least corrupted by money in general terms.

Currently 12/5 on last check. Then I remembered Brasil were playing them.

Brasil already have their name written on the WC by FIFA- it just wouldn’t be cricket otherwise.

In a fair football game, I would strongly fancy Germany to beat Brasil, but the bookies know better.

Brasil still available at 2-1 to win outright with Skybet. A steal, and worth the price of a pint – if you think your integrity should be sacrificed for the price of such a pint.
