Coordination and confidence

Wee Oscar’s dad, Knoxy, asked me to relay this message to you……

“The BIG cycle to Belfast… WOW! What an absolutely incredible effort by so so many people all to raise money for our wee hero, and a great night was had by all on Saturday night up at Donegal Celtic. It is very very humbling and I really felt that my thanks conveyed to them all on Saturday night was just not enough. I know they didn’t do it for thanks or for a pat on the back but I really hope they know that both me and Leona are deeply deeply moved by what they have done.

Over the last 9 months we have thanked many hundreds of people for all sorts of different things they have done for Oscar and I’m sure after a while the thanking almost comes across a bit ‘rehearsed’ and maybe a bit insincere but we just want to make sure they all know how thankful we are to them and to the amazing people who have donated to such a whopping total!”

Fantastic work by all, very well done.

Celtic have conceded 16 goals in the 9 games since Efe Ambrose’ much debated return to the team which faced Juventus last month, a period which saw them eliminated from the Champions League and the League Cup, while losing to Motherwell and Ross County.

They conceded 16 goals in the previous 24 games, including two Champions League games against Barcelona, one against Benfica and one against Spartak Moscow.  A problem which initially appeared to be limited to Efe, has clearly affected others, including Kelvin Wilson and even the goalkeeper looks less assured than before.

More than any other facet of football, defending is dependent on confidence and teamwork.  If communication is poor, you make mistakes.  If you expect teammates to make mistakes, you’ll make decisions accordingly.  If your decisions reflect a lack of confidence, you’re on a slippery slope to losing goals.  Bad defenders look good in good teams but good defenders look hopeless once order is disturbed.

Only just catching up with the antics on Gallowgate on Saturday.  Not read about the destruction of property or occasions of assault, which I assume preceded the mass arrests.  Surely?  I’m not sure if Alex Salmond has renewed the high levels of police funding for football-related activity, which was initially due to expire at the end of this month, but for someone who is usually so politically savvy, he seems to have set off on a road without checking consequences of the legal questions.

A bit like his major project…..

Where we are today is a consequence of the First Minister’s initiatives in 2011, and is why Celtic fans, the Club, and many others, opposed the initiative at the time.  It’s playing out pretty much as everyone with an interest in football expected.  Mr Salmond’s Scotland is looking a bit like Mrs Thatcher’s Yorkshire, circa 1984.

You’re as well blaming the inclement weather as blaming the police or anyone in the game, the police, like the weather, do what they do. This is the work of the Other Charlotte Square Bogeyman.

There was no need to introduce new legislation to deal with the huns, the existing legislation was sufficient.

I tend to agree. However, at one point on CQN there was a lot of support for a law to deal with specific instances of (in our case) anti-Irish racism. The consensus then was that something had to be done. As per usual with rushed, reactive legislation, the bill is exeptionally poor. I have serious issues with giving civil servants, and especially civil servants with a history of self control issues, subjective powers. And make no mistake, the police now have subjective powers, and authority well beyond acceptable standards. This is not only a Scottish problem however. A look across the border will see the same drive to authoritarianism, and the same zero tolerance to free expression.

This legislation was introduced to even up the score.

The legislation was introduced in a rushed manner. And co-incided with a lot of people on CQN saying something needed to be done. For further evidence, read Follow Follow from around that time. Rangers fans are *convinced* it was an SNP/papist/timmy conspiracy to end them. How do you square that circle?

The question you should be asking yourself is why the SNP wished to even up the score.

Only if I accept your previous premise, which I don’t. I don’t accept that’s a question i should be asking, because I don’t accept that’s why the bill was introduced. I believe the bill was a well meaning, rushed and supremely flawed bit of legislation. The more important question for me is – will it be modified or repealed?

Is there anything in the history of the SNP that would help you answer that question?

Nope. I assume you’re suggesting some historic anti-catholic sentiment in the SNP? Sorry, I must be hard of understanding, but are you suggesting the Green Brigade are a *catholic* organisation? Sorry, but Celtic does NOT equal Catholic. I’m a Celtic fan, and I want no association with the hypocritial, corrupt and morally vacuous Catholic Church. Regardless, let’s not deal with “but in the past” let’s deal with the present. The SNP have fostered a very good working relationship with the Catholic Church, I presume as a way of better connecting with Scottish Catholics.

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting on our Board to comment. As far as they’re concerned, the incident didn’t take place in or around Celtic Park, and technically, the march was illegal, as permission was apparently not applied for!

Time to ditch the ‘football’ talk and concentrate time and effort to the off field battle(s).

The fans are the club , attack one ….attack all.

Mr Lawwell and the security staff at CP need to be brought to account over their actions / inactions when it suits. Much as I love attending and encouraging the team on , Saturday being a classic example , I will not renew my season ticket until Celtic clarify 100% what exactly is going on with the GB.

Luckily with the polis scoring an own goal at the weekend it has further highlighted what is going on and lawyers are receiving documented info to act on.

Make no mistake this is a sustained attack on ALL things Celtic accelerated by the demise of oldco , a case of ‘ kicking us when we’re UP ‘. Having lived abroad for 14 years and back here for 3 (feels like 30, family circumstances) it is a sad indictment of this country that you cannot wear green in public without either getting a snidey comment or glare. Have promised myself that when I’m in a position to live outwith these shores again I will , when asked , where do you come from ? reply……Sectarianland …..then explain why……..might not need to.

    question number 1

which council in the uk (including norn iron) has the most amount of bigoted anti-catholic marches?

    question number 2

which party is the dominant party in said council?

    question number 3

name the leader of that said council who ordered more anti-catholic marches during his tenure?

    answers on a postcard…

  11. ps i don’t subscribe to the idea that sectarianism is solely a west of scotland thang, but… there is evidence to suggest that those that run things don’t help matters and I mean at council level as these are a council matters

You’re a nat and that’s about the top and bottom of it.

And basically, you’re a bigot. Dimissing all opinions out of hand that aren’t yours. Stereotyping and dismissing. What makes you different from the police now?

I’m anarchist communist. But I’m also a pragmatist. I want Scotland to participate in a democratic process. Under the current setup that will never happen. Hence my SNP vote. After independence? Who knows? I do know however that the SNP has done more for the poor in 5 years than Labour and the Tories in the last 50.

  13. All this police action is happening when we are part of the union . Time to vote yes and vote in a party that really want to work for the people of scotland . If you really want to get rid of the SNP or the old torry’s or new labour vote yes . I keep forgetting that all this police harassment only started when the snp got in.

    Definitely!

I wouldn’t say I’m a Marxist or whatever as all leftist doctrines are corrupted by single-issue politics unlike right-wing dogma which has only one goal, the pursuit of profit over people but I agree with everything else you say.

  16. P8ddy,any political party that “loses” previous years history of sectarian attacks, then goes ahead with legislation without even trying to retrieve them,is at the very least suspect. When members of said party talk about “evening up” arrests then that party is again suspect. When a party leader of that party talks about “Blood of our blood, bone of our bone” then it becomes rather more than suspect. When a leading member of a party is present at a football match where all sorts of sectarian bile is sung and chanted and calls it “A great advertisement for Scottish football” then it is again suspect. You’ll notice I’ve used the word “suspect” quite a lot. I actually don’t suspect that party. I actually let the facts speak for themselves. Now I wonder which party I could be referring to?

  17. Regarding efe, he shoulda been givem a week off after nations cup, esp after the juve game.

Month in africa playing alot of football is bound to take its toll. Same when players go to world cups , they need an extra week or so off.

  19. Pre African Nations Efe proved he can be a very good, composed defender and that he is capable at the highest level. Post African Nations Efe is a shadow of that player. Its called loss of form, it happens and its the manager’s job to manage it and coax him back to the form he showed previously.

Remember Bobo when he returned from playing with Guinea at the African Nations, he suffered a similar form dip as Efe

  22. Just had a look at yesterday’s Sunday Mail. Page 13, a big picture of an “orderly” ring of Polis surrounding the GB. Conveniently doesn’t show the 20-odd meat wagons, the 4 horses, the other 100-odd polis, and of course, the helicopter. A smaller pic of our “brave polis” with their batons drawn. Selective picture cropping seems to be a speciality of our MSM.
