12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

797

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

Thanks for the comprehensive CL pot data you posted earlier – very interesting.

I’d much rather have pot 4 than no pot to pee in, like some I could mention.

    Ten years in the C L @ 15mill a year X 10 = £150 millionnnnnnnnnnnn. That canny be right?? <:o))))

  3. I have noticed a rash of sevconians asking how to delete something/someone from FB today

I think it’s just dawning on them, they may have reached the mid point of the mourning cycle

I’d prefer to avoid trips to the Ukraine or Turkey.

Nice short trips to western Europe would be perfect.

Pot 1 – doesn’t matter, any Pot 1 team would be favourites but we could nick a point or 3 from Porto, Arsenal or Milan.

Pot 2 – Valencia, Benfica, or Braga would be good.

Pot 3 – Anderlect or Lille.

All reasonably straightforward to get to for supporters too.

In saying all that, I don’t really care, just delighted to be back in the big time again and hope we can put on a decent showing.

Getting nervous about the draw now…

Ideally, a pot 1 glamour tie like Real Madrid and 2 teams that we can each take 4pts or more from.

    Easy peasy!

    Kdc,

No offence meant by my earlier posts, and was only posting my experience of the match from my seat. Thankfully it didn’t spoil my enjoyment, you’ll be glad to know! ;-)

  7. Scott Brown attended a specialist today regarding ongoing hip problem.

I was asked in the pub last night why I thought Celtic would bring in another midfielder.

Brown and Kayal was my reply…

  8. Great game last night. Fantastic atmosphere that came thru even on the telly. Looking forward to the draw. Have to say I think our winnings could be spent better than on Del Pieros wages though.

Posted that earleir mate, he had a 2 hour video conference with Sydney as well. He does not want to go that far, reports in Italy state if we want him he will sign.

No nerves today, that all happened last night, today’s draw, I really don’t care who we get, weaker teams might give us more points but, the big teams will give us experience, it’s win win :o)

  11. Malorbhoy,

Yep, my 3rd season in that seat – I’m down for every game – I must have made a big impression on you guys behind us, eh?

Del Piero, obviously wouldn’t play in a sinking league, so no need to worry

  13. Reports in Italy stating we have put a bid in for Boly. Fiorentina have made a loan offer.

Ledley too… I reckon you Filip twarzic can do a job for us alongside Vic in the SPL.

For CL Ledley should be fit again but I’m certain Broony will play it anyway…

Also,I hope that we don’t draw any of those EPL clubs.

The EPL/Skysports/best league in the world tripe bores me to tears.

  17. As reported by Alessandro Sugoni to SkySport24 Alessandro Del Piero refused to Zion. Read the full-destination Pinturicchio and now in pole position passes the Celtic, which unlike the Swiss can show off more charm and qualifying in Champions League

  18. I don’t want to go to Chelsea.

Be nice not to have any of the baggage that would come with those games, especially in this first hun-free year.

Brown and Kayal are great players but how many months do they miss EVERY season through injury?

Celtic earn the other 11 SPL clubs a share of 1.5 million with their participation in the group stages.

    That works at £136,000 approx.

    A tidy wee sum

    “Champions’” League:

How many national champions in Pot 1? – TWO

How many national champions in Pot 4? – SEVEN

V interesting. I’ve long bemoaned the use of a seeding system in European or international football. It is merely a front for commercial interests and dilutes our old favourite ‘sporting integrity’. The draws should be open and completely random in my opinion, that is the strength and allure of cup competitions.

What about qualifying rounds I hear you cry? Do away with them. Have an open draw for two rounds of knock out ties to get to an open draw for the leagues, or bigger leagues to start with before the knockout stages.

Same for international tournaments, open draws for the qualifying groups!

give football back to the sport

PS same goes for tennis and all the other sports employing seeding for draws.
