12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

797

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

  1. My wish:

    R Madrid

    Braga

    Anderlecht

    Celtic Glasgow

Braga looked good, but i feel that Madrid should take full points of the others, leaving the other 3 teams to scrap for second. A full Parkhead, and this Celtic team reinforced by 2 top signings plus a squad man would be in the mix against Braga and Anderlecht. We don’t want a Pot 1 team who will give away cheap points against our other opponents.

Right now our centre mid for Saturday consists of Wanyama who was chronic for 70 minutes of that game last night and a young boy Twarzdik who has had one first team start.

Hope that we draw Real Madrid, but that HEL thing thus far,we could get Chelsea.

No Manchester United or Arsenal hopefully, sick to death looking at them.

I know i have spent my full CQN life going about how important it is to strengthen the first team to win CL money, to strengthen the first team, to get CL money and so on.

Mr Del Piero can surely play a bit of fitba, especially in his younger days, but at 37 and filthy rich, I cant see hm settling for playing against the likes of St Mirren away on cold Sunday morning with a 12 o clock kick off.

We have trimmed the wages bill significantly

We have sold 1 player and could still let one or two others go

Financially we must be quite sound, Sound enough to even sign a decent player

Me personally if we can only sign the likes of Johnny Russell, because we don’t have enough cash to sign better, then we should just bank the cash until we do have enough.

We already have CL qualification and cash. The title is probably ours with the current squad.

Lets now focus on trying to put quality into a few key positions and get away from signing so many hit and miss guys (especially when he have recently done well to get rid of a few of our books)

Celtic are in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2008/09 and you can see the reaction of their players to the draw live here on STV.

As well as showing the teams being picked out of the pots live from Monaco, we’ll also show you Neil Lennon’s squad reacting to the names they are paired with.

  15. Celtic favourites for Del Piero

    By Football Italia staff

Reports in Italy suggest Alessandro Del Piero has turned down Sion’s offer, so it’s between Celtic, Sporting Braga and Sydney FC now.

The former Juventus legend met with Sion directors on Wednesday and their proposal was outlined in detail, but was not enough to impress him.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Del Piero has rejected the opportunity to join Gennaro Gattuso in Switzerland.

Italian media suggest Celtic are now in pole position, as they have qualified for the Champions League and Scotland represents a new adventure for the 37-year-old.

Other options are Sporting Braga – who also reached the Champions League group phase after eliminating Udinese on penalties in the play-off – and Australians Sydney FC.

Tottenham Hotspur have dropped down the likely list of candidates after being linked to Del Piero earlier this week.

    Turned down Sion offer.

    Waiting on offer from Celtic.

Spurs appear to be out of the picture – if he went there he would be older than the manager!

    HH!!

  19. I’m Neil Lennon (tamrabam)

I do agree with you to an extent, but the defence needs strengthening urgently – no recognised quality centre backs, and we are going into the Champion’s League! Additionally neil said as recently as last night, that he can’t believe we got through with a squad as thin as ours. I know he has managed the numbers down, but clearly he feels strongly that we need to strengthen. Defender and target man striker have to be priorities A and B. (And maybe even C if we count 2 defenders!)

ADP: Great player in his day but think not for the young Hoops. One could argue experience would benefit the team but not at 20k per week.

Fingers and toes now crossed for a decent draw and not off to Russia etc.
