12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

797

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

I think it’s happening but just to them. Everyone else seems to be doing just fine. We’re even spreading the money around we’re that generous.

This doesn’t suit some curmudgeonly old journos who are still predicting gloom and doom.

    I’m loving it!

    Cheers.

    Really looking forward to it.

It was always a plan of mine to see the Fighting Irish play in South Bend, Indiana, but when I heard they were coming over, I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.

My friend lives in Finglas has tickets as well so we’re going out early to take in the festivities.

  3. CB defo needed for me too. Would like to see Charlie get back into an LB position where he can support attacks with more frequency even if that means Izzy getting less game time.

  5. Del Piero still played at high level last season for Juve and would bring a wealth of experience to our younger players. Tony Watt and Dylan McGeough would learn a lot from him in training etc and he would bring European experience to the team.

Wages would be the issue but could be worth it if he helps younger players develop into better players.

Would take Pirlo however in a heartbeat and he’s only 4 years younger.

Really? Rogne is young and unproven at the top level. Mulgrew has done great, but is a left back/utility player, who fills in at a number of spots. K Wilson until a week or so ago was seen by almost the whole support as a bombscare. He has I concede put in a couple of excellent performances.

    Majstorovic – away

    Loovens – away

    O’Dea – dross, a waster, and away.

    Luxcelt,

Charlie was vying with McManus for promotion as first team CH way back then, he’s always been a CH, and you saying its not so doesn’t change it.

I’d take Del Piero if he has an exceptional record bringing on youngsters in the teams he’s been playing for, imparting his skill and knowledge. I don’t doubt he still has some fine moments left in him but I can’t see them being enough to warrent having him here on what he can deliver as a player.

On the tripe they are printing about Fat sleekit ally buying shares out his own pocket (stop lauging at the back).

My guess is wages owed or a sweetner by green to get him onside and help dupe them for a third time.

Ps Anybody but Chelski (nothing to do with footballing skills) it has just taken us 125years to get rid of the RIFF-RAFF.

    – > In his first spell at the club? Well – Mcmanus came in at left back initially – so I am starting to doubt that you know what you are talking about! Mulgrew played left back at Utd, Wolves and Aberdeen (and sometimes left midfield at the latter). where he played for Celtic Youths is not really that relevant.

I’m not saying he hasn’t done well – but even if you count him as a CB, you need a certain type of player (stopper) alongside him to get the best out of that type of defender.

  16. Best travelling draw for me – Munich, Benfica, Ajax – Never been to Munich but its on the list, Lisbon is just a delight, as is Amsterdam

Its great just to be thinking about this today…. last night, after the final whistle, a jubilant big Fraser ran up the park to hug Charlie…. it just summed up to me how much it means to these guys… good young team, playing at the top table :-)

Or if you go for the glamour, then Real Madrid/Barcelona (either or!), then Manchester City then Juventus. Yikes!

McManus debut – away v Hibs? – was a t LB but he is on record as saying he had never played there before, IIRC.

Note to Peter Lawwell if you bump into Craig Whyte in Monaco could you buy him a pint & say thank you from me and I will square you up on Sat at game.
