12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

Surely Barcelona, Lisbon and Moscow pales in to insignificance compared to Peterhead, Berwick and wherever it is East Stirling play.

  2. Really disappointed in that draw after all the hype. We’ve played all those sides recently.

Wanted new teams to play. Bet you ‘ol PL is kicking the table that we didn’t get in Pot D#Moneyspinner

Watched Fenerbache 1 — Spartak Mosca 1 last night .

Spartak are a good team . McGeady played well enough to have the Italian commentator purring. He looks to have improved a lot – particularly the defensive aspect of the game

  4. Overall very happy with the draw :)

Slight chance of qualification with that, we’ve knocked out both benfica (twice) and spartak in recent years

  5. I’m on the train home watching the draw while huns on the train are getting excited about going to watch them play Falkirk!

  6. I seem to recall the last time Messi played at Paradise he went off injured…more of the same please…not that I would wish injury on a player :D

  7. Och no Barcelona again!

Aiden making a return to CP – hope he doesn’t do a Henrik!

Could have been a lot worse – Group D the group of death!

    Cannae wait!

  8. Definitely not the worst draw. Most Pot 4 teams would get well chinned in Groups D, E or F. Group A is very tough too. Group G will not hold the same trepidation (Barca aside, of course).

I just cant believe how Man U and Arsenal get the easy groups so often.

In terms of European football after Christmas, we’ve a good sporting chance with that draw. Throw in Barca and a prodigal son and it’s got some spice.

Group D is feckin awesome though. I would have loved to play Madrid, but happy to settle for what we’ve got.

When will we know the fixtures?

  10. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

    Barca,Porto,Spartak & Celtic

Nope it is Benfica not Porto.

:(((( just noticed nerves getting to me, writing notes with pen & paper

Stop moanin’ ghuys. It could have been Forres Mechanics!

  15. Ho hum. I would have liked to have played 3 other pot 4 teams but the draw was obviously rigged. Still, let’s make the best of it. I fancy us to beat Spartak and Benfica and get something away from home as well….with Benfica even if it’s only on the toss of a coin.

  16. This is a draw worthy of the Great Glasgow Celtic.

    How sweet it is.

A draw made by the Celtic Gods & Goddesses.

There is NO downside to this gift.

  17. I’m happy, I love seeing Barca at Parkhead and and I’m old enough to remember some great clashes with Benfica. Anyone else remember the great Eusabio? I had my 8 yr. old nephew with me last night and he’s still not calmed down. He’s also desperate to see Lionel Messi at Parkhead so he might get his wish. All he has to do is convince his Mum……

How can you turn the CL draw into a maon at PL !! lol

I’m off happy with that group

Doesn’t matter which group we are in,

    Doesn’t matter who we are playing;

What matters is that the Celtic family,

give the opposition a night that will make them wanting there mommy!!

The double header against Benfica or Spartak decides our fate then.

    Not apprehensive at all…

Quiet confidence is slowly creeping in in fact.

Need to try and stay grounded… Hang on, I think I’ve actually found a use for Jabba and rest of the band oot o Star Wars after all.

Nothing like unbridled envy and understatement to keep your feet on the ground.

  21. FF estimating tonight’s attendance at the Asbestosdome at 20,000.

So they lose over 50% of their crowd in a fortnight?

    Good going…
