12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

797

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

Tallybhoy. I was up the huns end with my da and wee brother for the Leeds game (couldn’t get a ticket for the Celtic end). My brother couldn’t get a ticket at all and manged to squeeze in with me bunging the turnstile keeper, a common practice in those days.

I heard similar stories from many other people I knew, so the actual attendance that night would have been larger. Hampden was packed to the gunnels and that crowd will never be equalled.

    Happy days then AND now.

  2. Ideally we will sign a centre half and a striker but we also need to consider using our resources to tie up our existing assets like Hooper, Watt and Wanyama to name but 3.

  3. Mcbhoy when you asked about huns in the hborg end, i did see a union bears flag being held up briefly. I remarked to the guy beside me at the time. it seemed they where fighting with the police and stewards.Any how roll on half four.

  4. Absolutely delighted with the result last night. Was disappointed to miss the game but just watched some admittedly short highlights on Uefa.com and saw the goals.

Will have a wee look on YouTube to get an idea of the atmosphere, but assume it was another good one at The Park.

    Can’t wait for the draw.

Really don’t care too much who we draw, but would prefer to avoid Man U, Barca, Shakhtar and Benfica due to having met them so often recently.

Real Madrid would be my ideal choice, not only for the for the chance to go to The Bernabeu (add that to previous visits to Camp Nou, San Siro, Amsterdam ArenA, old OlympiaStadion in Munich and Old Trafford to name a few) and for them to experience a CL night atmosphere as “….Parkhead responds, as only Parkhead can!”

    Bring on that draw!!!

    HAIL! HAIL!

Broonie now on injury list for 3 weeks. Looks like young Twardzik will get an extended run

    ————————————————

As expected. Another injection for last night’s match probably. Just a coincedence that he is being listed for 3 weeks.. Thats when the first legs of the CLGS are.. and probably time for another jag.

I like Scott Brown and understand exactly how important he is to us but think he needs a prolonged rest and less of these injections. Coming from a sporting family including an Olympian athlete I know exactly how much damage they can do in the long term.

  6. IF we got del Piero, he would give us what we need for CL games.

Guile and vision to see a pass.

    We are lacking that.

The nearest we have is Mc.Court.

He played at the highest level last season and has always been a model professional.

Our young players would come on in leaps and bounds to have a player like that at the club, even at training.

Hooper’s goal was down to the man that mattered…the ref.

Incoming targets are down to the man that matters…NL.

Am staying at the Radisson Blue in Cebu City – have no idea where that is relative to you – will be my first time in Cebu, first time in the Phillipines in fact ! What is Comcast ? Local cable TV ?………………..

I’m currently about 120km from the city; so about +3 hours travel time…….

Comcast is a satellite system that allows access to SKY, FOX, etc.,

A new bar/restaurant ‘Marshall’s Irish Pub’ has recently opened not far from your hotel; could be a 50/50 chance of broadcasting via comcast……….

    Mind it’s a 22:00 KO……….

Given the madness of the last year in Scottish football,I am surprised the laptop loyal are not encouraging the other SPL clubs to make a legal claim to share in Celtic’s Champion’s League loot !

  9. ASonOfDan – sorry you feel that way.

I think signing Del Piero would be a little bit silly as he would probably only be after our nuggets.

I respect and listen to all opinions. It’s one of the reasons I spend time on this site and am able to form my own.

    What a night that was!

I was in the South Enclosure near the hun end, with a couple of pals (I was 16).

My dad was in the north enclosure – he said it was absolutely mental in there!

    Happy days/daze!

  11. From UEFA website – “Once the draw is completed, a computer draw determines the final position of the sides within their group and therefore the order of the home and away matches.”

Anyone know when the home and away ties will be confirmed? Is this done right away or overnight?

P.S. We dont need no bigoted, cheating Rangers

If McMoist is to receive a punishment from the SFA, what will it be??

Do they send him to the bus stop at away grounds? What?

The SFA will ban him from dugout for 12 months. Well they’ve done everything else to assist Sevco so keeping the jolly joker away from team is bound to help. A fat loser.

Step forward Tony Watt, he showed both in abundance last night

  15. I noticed that Sammi took off a back support belt when he was taken off last night.

Some performance from someone with a sore back.

The UEFA computer will determine thge final positions of the sides within their groups and therefore the order of home and away matches after the draw for the nexrt round of the Ramsdens Cup is made.

  17. Would Anthony Stokes benefit from being called Tony

Tony Stokes, say it out loud, Tony Stokes. Seems a better player to be already

If you come on later. I sent an email to Tommy re the leaflets not heard anything from him yet. Be back on later.

Neil Lennon? There is only one!!!!

  19. Can any of you football historians out there tell me what has been the highest pot in which Celtic has been drawn in their Champions League history?

  20. Congratulations to Neil and the squad for getting Celtic to a good place. Top of the league and into the group stages. Now for a teriffic season, Hail Hail!

  21. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Banning mccoist from the dug out?

Some of the wee teams they play don’t actually have dugouts.

It’s just a wee bench at the side of the pitch, or two railway sleepers on top of each other.

    Where’s the punishment in that?

    For goodness sake.

  22. Green Lantern (((((0))))) on

Tallybhoy. Aye. Leeds sacrificed everything to win that tie.

Prior to this they had variously been described as unbeatable and a super team.

We pumped them home and away and they never recovered from it.

One of my abiding memories of the Hampden game, apart from Bobby Murdoch’s masterclass, was wee Bertie sorting out so called hard man Norman Hunter early on.

His gas was very much at a peep afterwards.

The English media could not believe what happened.

It was great to say ” Telt yees” to my English pals.

  23. NFL’s priority #1

Get Tony Watt’s signature twice on an improved 5 year contract.

Steinreignedsupreme – What about Bill Leckie? He was warning Sir David Murray about overspending 15 years ago

‘Buddy’ Bill has been too busy perusing ‘dating’ sites on the internet of late to be distracted with work.

“BLUE BOY INTO WALKING, FLUTE MUSIC AND BEARS LOOKING FOR SOME TLC FROM A LADY WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS”

‘I noticed that Sammi took off a back support belt when he was taken off last night’

Sammi played through the pain barrier last night. He also took a knock to his knee early doors but kept going

Quite a number of our players should be pulling out of their international squads in the next few days

We were definitely a Pot 2 seed…..and i think it was the year we were drawn with Man U, Benfica and Copenhagen.

Not definite on that season though, but we have definitely been a Pot 2 seed.
