12 former Euro champions compete for Champions League

797

There has been a bit of revisionist nonsense expressed recently which appeared to damn the achievements of the current team by comparing them to the great Martin O’Neill side, but Martin’s team were known to struggle in qualifying on occasion.

Let the record show, four wins from four games.  Three clean sheets, two of which were achieved away from home.  The remainder of the tournament will present stiffer challenges but Celtic are a completely different team than the side which lost heavily in Utrecht two years ago.

This is what planned, sustainable, progress tastes like.

The Champions League proper will be difficult for Celtic to win; no fewer than 12 former European Champions battle to reach the Wembley final, but we are one of them and we’re there on merit.  After a four year absence the excitement of those early Champions League nights at Celtic Park against Rosenborg, Porto and Juventus has returned to the club.

Bring it on.

  1. Looking at the Scotland squad list names and you have to laugh that there is no place for Kris Commons

Looks like Steven Fletcher sussed Levein well before the rest of us

He is the Scottish Bertie Vogts

  2. Mr Whippy : Hooper was offside.

It’s where he tends to be during most attacks.

He is perhaps the least positionally aware forward we have had since Shaun Maloney.

Glad that the linesman (and official behind goal ) were both asleep at the wheel.

Likewise, wonderful to meet you Pal!

Your observation of my observation is likewise… observant.

To me, Hooper has too many of these moments were he seems to fall asleep for a second or two, just enough time to mess up a bit. Like in the ICT game at the weekend where young Tony done superb to take the ball from the feet of the keeper on the line and put in a wonderful ground cross across the face of goal, but Gary failed to “be there”. He is not high up in my favorites list even if he is a “useful player”.

Agreed young Watt needs as much time as possible as I have mentioned a few times on the web and comments to celtic TV already. A legend in the making perhaps! Used to playing the lone forward role too… very very handy and just Watt :D we need!

  6. CELTIC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BOOST FOR THE SPL

Following Celtic’s qualification to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, the Scottish Premier League announced the resultant positive impact for the SPL as a whole with the League’s European co-efficient and UEFA solidarity funding both set to receive a boost.

The co-efficient rankings are based on a points system calculated against the results of teams from each country. Celtic and the SPL will be awarded 4 bonus points for participation in the group stages, with additional points being awarded for a group stage win or draw.

Moreover, the amount of UEFA solidarity funding that is shared equally by the other 11 SPL clubs not competing in the Champions League will this season increase from £500,000 to around £1,500,000, partly offsetting the financial damage caused to the League by the loss of Rangers from the SPL.

SPL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “”Our congratulations go to all at Celtic FC on once again reaching the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. Their success is a welcome boost for the entire game in Scotland – both financially and reputationally. Ahead of the start of Scotland’s World Cup qualifying campaign next week, last evening is a timely reminder that Scottish football still has a rightful place at European football’s top table.”

cadizzy – there is a poster on the Guardian’s report of last night’s game called Alky71 (quite possibly it’s Alka) who finishes his/her/its post with “thumbsup”

Is there something you are not telling us? If not, perhaps you should be offering him/her/it a square go on the grounds of copyright infringement. Are you up to the virtual physicality of it all?

Cadizzy, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

The (thumbsup) is a symbol of freedom, a sigil of peace, an emblem of awesomeness.

So why would I want to take that away from some poor, deluded, public sector worker idling his time away on the Guardian?

Where there is discord, may we bring harmony.

  9. We need to try and find a way of ditching the Tennents shirt sponsorship deal asap!

Mentioned it on here yesterday – we have Ian Livingston on the plc board who is the CEO of the BT group.

BT deal? Why not? Or is that a ‘conflict of interest?’ If it is then why did he join the board? He’s been a board member for 5/6 years now.

Over to you Ian! Are you lurking?

    HH!!

  10. So…we’re good, and the draw for the group stages will be made in a couple of hours.

Meanwhile….I’ve been listening to some of the propaganda surrounding The Paralympics…so much crosses my mind, like all these ‘charities’ jumping on the bandwagon to use the disabled to line their pockets and tap into the various mandatory work programmes as companies like Atos ( a benefits stripping/denial outfit….nothing else…that’s its only remit in the benefits area…it does supply IT to the beeb and that’s why you rarely hear anything negative about them on the govt. mouthpiece ) cynically exploit The Paralympics by majorly sponsoring them so they can say : look at what they can do…they don’t need disablement benefits…they can get sponsorhip from charities. And it makes me sick.

My better half works with a special needs group, and I’ve gone along a couple of times to help out. If some of those lovely people, because they are mainly that, lovely, have their benefits stripped or reduced to the bone,as is planned by these ConDems then their futures are very very bleak indeed. So, this cynical use of The Paralympic Games is worrying.

Scalping by the airlines can be subverted by judicious planning round destinations. Say….fly to Edinburgh and get the short train ride to Glasgow if you’re going to Parkhead.

Similar swerves can be had abroad apart from the more difficult ones.

    Anybody noticed two things?

1 Throw ins. We seem to have improved a bit in that the only option is no longer a long throw up the touch line. Short ones or backward shys or shys into the middle are more apparent.

2 Free kicks and corners. Training ground moves are being tried with good goal results which all points to coaching improvement as coaches themselves develop.

It all takes time of course to find out what works and what does not.

On that note we know what buys have not worked so lets hope the improvements in all the other areas are reflected in our buying policy and processes too (but then what will we debate?)

I can’t agree with you there, for me the guy has been a standout in the position for the past 2 seasons

    Kojo,

Totally agree with you, and about the media driving of it. Last two seasons, two domestic clean sheet records. This year, 3 away clean sheets in europe, and our goals against column at home only marred by some possible casualness at Inverness after the game was won.

Defence? Nothing to see here. We have three recognised CHs (Awe naw objection noted!)a CM that can cover in VW and a LB that can cover there in ML. Thats a partnership of any 2 from 5. Why stock up on more CHs to sit in the stand??

Up front I don’t see Sammi as a striker, he does his best work on the left for me (but does expose Izzy when played there). That leaves us Hooper, Stokes and Watt. granted Commons can come in there but he looks better off the front or wide. I don’t think 3 is enough to see us through the season. We need someone in there.

CM we are covered if fit, but they’re not. I’d also love to see a playmaker in there that can boss things, but can we get someone like that on a budget??
