1200 hungry weans, ill-conceived Act

813

Apologies for absence yesterday, the day got away from me.  The blog would have said something like, “really pleased Celtic pushed back so vocally against the illiberal and ill-conceived Offensive Behaviour Act”, but with less brevity.

Shortly before Christmas we launched the campaign to fund the construction of a school kitchen in Malawi through Mary’s Meals to mark the 10th anniversary of Celtic Quick News.  The project would cost £7000 and to get us there we scheduled a St Patrick’s Day dinner dance for next Friday, 14 March.

8 days out I am delighted to inform you the target money has been raised, Mary’s Meals already have £7000 in their bank, the project is officially funded and construction plans are underway.

That the money was raised ahead of the event was a surprise, although after 10 years of watching Celtic fans go about their business in this manner, it shouldn’t have been.

We received a remarkable donation from Patrick Foley’s Irish Bar & Restaurant in Gent, and Barney Vallely’s Irish Pub in Cologne, who between them raised €2600.

You don’t think of Gent and Cologne as being big ‘Celtic towns’.  I’m sure they are not, but there enough Celtic fans in each city to form a proper community.  Their work has been incredible and a real inspiration.  Thank you to Patrick, Charlie and their patrons.  Special thanks to Kolncelt, who orgainsed the entire effort, but has had to cancel his trip to Glasgow next week.

This gave us a problem, of course, The Show is going ahead next week, but the kitchen at the Kholoni Primary School is already paid for, what will be our focus next week.  Here is a remind of what that £7000 is going to achieve:

Mary’s Meals feed 822,142 kids each day across some of the most impoverished areas of the world.  The global average annual cost per child is £10.70, and is only £7 in Malawi, where the Kholoni Primary School is.

Kitchens are brick constructed and fully stocked with stoves, pots, serving utensils, mugs and cutlery.  They also have a wall-mounted blackboard, so the room can be used as a classroom outside of meal times.

The charity started in 2002 when founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow met a mother dying of AIDS, and her child, whose only ambition was to have enough food to eat.

93% of money raised goes directly to the needy and, where possible, the 65,000 volunteers who keep the project running are drawn from parents and relatives of the children being fed.

The impact in Malawi, 17th poorest country by UN measures, is significant.  Mary’s Meals provide a daily meal to 20% of the countries primary school aged children.  The impact is more than just feeding the hungry, two years after a Mary’s Meals project in Malawi starts, school enrolment is up an average of 30%, leading to higher educational achievements, and a better chance in life.

I’m open to ideas on what to focus on next week but my instinct is to get back onto Mary’s Meals and ask where they next need a kitchen.

A couple of pairs of tickets have become available for Friday’s CQteN St Patrick’s Day at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  £50 per ticket, dinner, dancing, two acts, Irish dancers; it is shaping up to be quite an event.  Email Tony if you want to be there, cqnbooks@gmail.com

We have a donations page for CQN Mary’s Meals’ projects, if you would like to help out, you can do so here.

Thanks.. Been really down about celtic past couple months. 99% off field reasons but its articles likes this makes me glad im in the same team as the good guys.

Not in the same league thou as some fantastic people who support our club our community but more importantly support people wherever ad whenever is needed.

What this club and its fans can do is scary.. If only we could be more united at times and challange those who try to disrupt and stop us.

Well done everyone involved and look forward to the nxt mission .

  2. Fell out of love with Scotland in late ’60’s early 70’s, look how many caps the Lisbon Lions won. Disgraceful.

I’ve met more people on my travels who were kind to me than those who were difficult. I have rarely found difficulty or affection arising from my nationality.

But my point was more straightforward. The world image of Scots people is not as Billy Bhoy05, rather optimistically, portrayed. And I find self-praise very unconvincing anyway.

“Brian McClair was loudly jeered coming on as a sub for Scotland vs Malta around 1992.”

I may be wide of the mark here, but my guess would be that McClair’s performances for Scotland may have had more of a bearing than who he used to play for. He played 30 times for Scotland between 86 and 93. He scored the first of his 2 (two) international goals in 1992.

I’ve travelled extensively and I’ve some wonderful stories about Scots abroad. Of course the Irish also have a wonderful name and they are brilliant at self promotion: Paddy’s day is a fantastic celebration throughout the world. I am friendly with many Irish fholk and visited the Republic many times but I cannot remember any Irish, although the can be self deprecating, running down their own country, and it happens often on this site, which I find really upsetting.

PG Wodehouse was a Nazi sympathiser. I wouldn’t use a quote from him to support any point I was trying to make.

Woodie Guthrie was full of praise for Scotland and Glasgow where he spent some time

during the 2nd war. He was a merchant seaman and, following surviving his ship being sunk, had to report to Greenock for his next duty; he spent about a week here, I believe.

Plenty of people have written well of their pleasant experiences in Scotland.

I guess we can pick quotes to support all points of view.

  20. Great news, Paul and well done to all concerned (especially the bhoys from Gent and Cologne).

Co-incidentally, last weekend’s Paradise Windfall draw at Celtic Park was made by 2 clergy from Malawi, who are on a short-stay visit, along with some of the students from the school at which they teach. (They were guests at Celtic Park, courtesy of staff and pupils from St Benedict’s High School in Linwood).

As usual, the prize was £12,000 and it crossed my mind that the clergy may have entertained a notion of running off back to Malawi with the cheque!

To put it into context: the average (PPP) GDP per person in Malawi is around $860 per year; in the UK it’s closer to $38,000 per year …

    FF

  21. Woody Guthrie spent a week in Greenock ?

One week in Greenock is like a year in any other place (to borrow from 10cc)……especially if you have to look at the eyesore that is the new arts centre…..it was also raining when I was last up mid Feb. No, really, it was!

  22. The relationship between the Scots supporters and the Celtic support is ever changing.

In the 60s , 70s and 80s there were large elements of the crowd who were ill-disposed towards Celtic players. After the Troubles in NI, more Celtic fans than previously became conflicted about supporting the team. Later still, the Rangers support began to desert Scotland and actively support England in the Gazza/Butcher era, though this trend is reversing. Nonetheless, it has left the Tartan Army support as largely made up of fans from teams outwith Celtic and Rangers.

Not all of our reasons for being annoyed with the Scotland team stand up to scrutiny.

The failure to pick the Lions players for caps had a bit to do with prejudice but was also overlain with a tendency by Big Jock to de-select them as he protected Celtic by declaring them injured, which came as a surprise to many of the players who were told they had an injury. In terms of playing ability, Willie Henderson was, in the early 60s a superior player to Jimmy Johnstone and deseved his caps. By the 2nd half of the 60s, Jimmy had become the superior talent and Scotland was slow to recognise this shift as both remained very good options. There was not a lot of difference in playing ability between Big Billy and Ronnie McKinnon, as Scotland had a dodgy defence when either was playing, but Billy was 10 times the leader that Ronnie was. Unfortunately, the tradition of hun captaincy, via John Greig, meant that this trump card of Billy’s was undervalued. Bobby Murdoch was withdrawn from squads on numerous occasions for real and imagined injuries and fitness issues.

There were tangible instances of anti-Celtic bias, as in the de-selection of King Kenny on the brink of breaking George Young’s record, which he later broke anyway, albeit as a Liverpool player, but many issues of perceived bias were more mixed than we would prefer to see.

The Tartan Army’s grudge bearing against Brian McLair had very little to do with his Celtic career. It was up there with their bizarre tantrum and grudge holding against Gary McAllister, who would happily have played for the huns, for having the temerity to miss a penalty against thae English bassas.

I find it difficult to equate a fight against the SFA as a fight against the National Team. In any effect, a Celtic boycott of the National Team would have less effect than we might hope. If we were going to activley take our fight on with the SFA, then it would have to be on the harder and more self-sacrificing grounds of boycotting Celtic ties in the Scottish Cup competition. That would be both a bigger ask and a more telling boycott.

In light of Nir Bitons injury last night while playing for Israel he is likely to be out of action until next season do Celtic receive any financial compensation for this loss ? It looks like a good break for his fellow countryman Beram Kayal to stake a claim for a midfield place. H.H.

  24. Hi Paul67

It is always a delight to hear that fellow Celtic fans have once again exceeded expectaitions. I know i should no longer be surprised, but I constantly am. There are so many needy causes out there and Celtic fans have been asked to go to the well repeatedly, and every time they deliver.

To all involved and especially to the lads in Cologne and Gent, take a bow.

As for further monies raised next week ? I’m sure that Mary’s Meals will willingly accept your offer of contributing to a further kitchen.

Looking forward to a great night next Friday.

Paul67 & CQN family, absolutely fantastic achievement, and no doubt very few if us will ever realise how much this will mean, to those Mary’s Meals will support.

Pad I , asked earlier where I was.

I am currently in Kenya, on a family holiday, which is to celebrate my wife’s 50th (28th Feb).

Yesterday, we visited an orphanage in the Ukunda area, we specifically visited an orphanage off the beaten track, and were informed, they urgently needed food.

60 kids, with 18 actual orphans.

Anyway stopping on the way, we bought some very basic food items ( although large quantity),

To see the kids reaction, was a totally amazing experience, on Ash Wednesday :-)

And then to have them sign Thanks for such a minor gift from us – wow

Many have also now been kitted out in the hoops, courtesy of a few CQNrs, and at night a few will sleep in Kano Foundation t- shirts :-) thanks Sanna.

This point should not been as about me or my family

    But

How much joy us CQNrs can bring to those much much less fortunate than us

Don’t get me started on Tartan Army

Posters referring to Celtic players being abused are correct and this continued well into the 1980s

I recall an occasion in Feb 1987 when Ireland came calling and – not unreasonably – the club partnership of Judas and McClair who had scored 60 goals that season up to that point – got the nod.

This did not meet with the approval of the inhabitants of the Mount Florida end – whose mood was not improved any for an 6th minute Ireland winner by M Lawrenson.

Thereafter they howled every time the Celtic men touched the ball and screeched the entire night to the introduction from the bench of the Sleekit one.
