15-0 for Celtic in cups, marking Brendan’s card on 3 cup finals

401

One for the historians, has any team won the Scottish and League Cups in the same season without conceding a goal? So far this season, Celtic are 15 goals without reply in the cup competitions, with a possible three fixtures remaining, the first of which is at Celtic Park against St Mirren three weeks from now.

Brendan Rodgers described the remaining Scottish Cup games as “three cup finals”. I’ll mark his card, there is only one cup final to worry about and that’s the game against St Mirren. Plan beyond that and you risk a slip.

Lesser teams than them have eliminated us from cups in recent seasons, and the Paisley club have dumped us out twice recently. Any Celtic fan who has considered the possibility of a treble before will know how this story often ends too well.

There are various ways to reach the top of the managerial pyramid.  Accounts is the most common path, join the finance team and you get an oversight on most important areas.  Legal is another fertile field to progress to the top from.

Some technical people make it, especially in retail or engineering.  Few get there from marketing, HR or IT.  No one gets there from public relations, that’s a departmental dead end.

Of course, a PR monkey can hope to become the de facto decision maker, with his/her hands on all the necessary levers.  I can think of only one case like this.  The company/club concerned have not had a good week.  They’ve not even had good PR.

Blane Valley / Bearsden and Milngavie areas

As most fans will be aware, Glasgow City Council are introducing parking restrictions within 1 mile of Celtic park from August.  A group of Celtic supporters in the Blane Valley / Bearsden and Milngavie area are trying to organise a supporters bus that will go from the villages in the area (Drymen, Balfron, Buchlivie, Killearn, Blanefield and Milngavie/Bearsden).

If you would be interested in travelling to / from Celtic Park on a supporters bus from next season can you drop an email to BlanevalleyCSC@hotmail.com, with your name.

Delaney’s , it must be a relief that the home is convenient for you all to get to and she is enjoying her , hopefully , temporary stay there, before going home.

Just watched the Bournemouth v City game . City’s Davide Silva is an incredible player, fabulous to watch. We have been lucky over the last ten years to have saw him, Xavi and the majestic Andreas Iniesta all play at Celtic Park. Possibly the best three creative midfielders in European football in the last decade.

Delaney’s, in the podcast Gordon Strachan did with Graham Hunter, Gordon had the same opinion as your good self about Andreas. Andreas and Xavi were class acts on and off the pitch.

Compare and contrast the response from the Celtic support to Andreas being subbed a few years to that of that naemark git last year.

  10. I had an interesting conversation with Willie Wallace today about James Forrest. Willie is always highly critical of James mostly because he knows there is a sensational player in there that even now we are not seeing.

And I know that he has talked to other Lions about the player.

The Lions made the most of their abilities – maybe all too briefly – and you get the feeling that James Forrest – more than any other player we currently have at the club, is the one the Lions think could be up to their standard.

Willie emailed me at half time last week when we were losing to St Johnstone complaining about aspects of our play and what we should be doing to win the match.

Such is the confidence in the away support that I told him not to worry, remember being 2-0 down at Motherwell and that we’d win.

It should just how much he cares. It was very late on the Gold Coast when he sent that email and he was up early to catch the first flight in a Brisbane – Stop over – London – Glasgow – Lisbon – Glasgow – Edinburgh – then a Parkhead schedule.

Then he had other stuff to do – a few visits to see his friend Tommy Gemmell included – and signing books for CQN and Celtic Stripes for Celtic.

His only reward is to help the Celtic family. The highlight of his trip was presenting the £10k Paradise Windfall cheque to the Polish Bhoys at half-time.

The boardroom isn’t for Willie. He’s much happier being among us, his Celtic family.

Anyway if James Forrest, or anyone who knows him reads this then please take heart from the belief that Willie Wallace has in you as a Celtic player.

You just have so much more to give if only you’d believe.

As Willie said, be just like Jinky.

    Q. In a football mad city, which tonight has been invaded by Borussia Dortmund fans, there is only one question that has to be considered and answered.

Why is it, that when you speak to Portuguese, German and people of various other nationalities, and say the word “Celtic” do they automatically smile and want to shake your hand or buy you a drink?

  17. Brendan has brought James Forrest on a ton, he was great during the first few months of the season culminating in a man of the match performance in the Cup Final v Aberdeen. In the first half away at Man City i thought he was immense but sadly went off injured shortly after half time. Like all players of that nature they seem to take a wee while to shake off the effects of a hamstring injury. On Saturday past i just got the sense early on that he was on it and so it proved. It’s evident that Brendan prefers him to Roberts for two reasons particularly, firstly his ability to press and secondly his ability to run in behind. If James can stay fit he will finish the season strongly. Like all Celtic players he could help himself no end by engaging in a bit of Hunskepling, something we have not seen from him to date.

For anyone wanting to follow up on HT’s (are we still allowed to call him that now that he has done a runner from Hamilton?) post of last night on Celtic and Socialism, can I recommend Ian McCallum’s The Gathering Storms – The Glasgow Irish and The Great War.

It is, without doubt, one of the finest Celtic history books I have read and is the first in a proposed series of 7 — the third of which has recently been published.

It is not a book about the ins and outs, rights and wrongs, of anyone’s politics, but is a record of the politics of the time and why politics was so important in the formation of Celtic in the first place.

Great book and should be read by all Celtic fans.

Winning Captain’s , Wullie’s post earlier on today didn’t half cheer me up.

I still feel really chuffed my son and I got our photo taken with my dad’s favourite from the Lions at Waterstone’s when I bought his book.

The old guy who sits next to me at Celtic Park really doesn’t like James , mainly because of his inconsistency .

I hope Wullie got a chance to speak to some of our players to help them understand what playing for our team means plus being appreciative of our fans.

Brogan, I get the impression we are more popular in Europe , particularly , Germany than we are here.

Before the 2013 cup final, there was a Bayern Munich fan looking for a ticket for the game. He had been at Wembley the night before to see his team win the Champions League final then travelled over night to try to get into our game at Hampden.

At the 2015 league cup final , my son spotted a number of Dortmund fans at the game , joining in with all the singing and celebrations that day.

  23. If you look back at the success of Barca over the last 10 years, the periods when Iniesta was at his best coincide with the major successes of the team. I’ve been a huge fan of Barca up until the last year or so when a few things have annoyed me. Anyway a couple of years ago i decided to make the trip over and see them play in the CL quarter final against PSG. They were on fire at the time and eventually went on to win the treble. Anyway, about 10 minutes into the match, Iniesta received the ball deep in his own half and proceeded to turn and dribble past three players with some style. As he drove into the PSG half the stadium fill with a buzz and energy, it was one of those moments when you thought if they score from this it will be incredible. Not to be disappointed he duly delivered a defence splitting sliderule pass through to Neymar who swiftly rounded the keeper and scored. It was an unforgettable moment and typified what Iniesta and beautiful football is all about.

  24. In any discussion on the greatest ever football player, in any article on the same topic, I’ve yet to see or hear Iniesta’s name mentioned.

And I’m pretty sure I never will, great midfielder though he may be.

One of his team mates, on the other hand. . . .

  25. I give in. It was on Bbc news tonight but let’s not get bogged down in detail. Three public football playing parks next to Catholic schools will be turned into forrests. The kids are using them as cones thus far.

VFR, Dixie Deans , Beatbhoy , Andreas Iniesta would have probably been termed as too wee to make it at some clubs.

Beatbhoy you may have a point as Iniesta seems quite unassuming and likes to do his talking on the pitch.

He has been more affected by injury over the past two to three seasons but prior to that he was normally in the Ballon D’or nominations .
