16 years ago today Larsson poured millions into Celtic bank

201

16 years ago today, a cameo performance from Henrik Larsson just after the hour mark, brought Barcelona their second Champions League title.  His two assists were enough to overcome the lead 10-man Arsenal held.

Celtic fans celebrated that title as that win ensured we gained entry to the following season’s Champions League group stage without having to endure the qualification rounds.  As a consequence, the club booked two summer tours, one to the USA and one to Japan, each earning multi-million pound pay cheques.  A year earlier, the best on offer was perfunctory warm-up games against Fulham, Leicester and Leeds.

The commercial department has already lined up a lucrative Australian tour for the World Cup break later this year.  After media coverage of the tile win in Australia this week, the optics of that tour now look great.  The challenge now is to fill dates in July and August with similar earners

Much of the world is still slumbering from post-lockdown blues, which has dampened appetite for the commercial risk surrounding events.  Still, the earning opportunities from pre-qualification is a substantial benefit to a club like Celtic.

Can you name the two who started that Barcelona-Arsenal Champions League final and who also played for Celtic?

  1. Hope the hoops come to the States again.

I still remember Philly in 2012 fondly.

    Not a Celtic related question;

Six englishmen have scored in champions league final?

Should we ask the EPL to manage / sell / publicise the SPL?

Give up our footballing independence and ask the English for help?

    Asking for a friend.

The SFA / SPFL aren’t very good.

So do we just accept it or should we try and do something about it?

  6. Fill July and August with similar earners — no chance.

What we need is a proper preparation for the CL.

The end of the season is the time for long range foreign jaunts.

We don’t have time in July and Aug for gallivanting of to the back of beyond for few dollars — just so low rent / just so second rate property bean counter if I’m honest.

    We are better than that..

My flabber has been well and truly gasted.

I’m hoping that the odd political rant — well mannered / factually correct / topical — will be allowed to keep the Nats on their toes.

Currently trying to come to terms with TR’s departure.

Seven stages to grief — 6 still to go.

  8. We’ve had quite a few advantages over the last 16 years. Certainly rangers entering liquidation was a biggie.

And yet, I’ll be watching Masterchef reruns tomorrow eve.

Ange has performed brilliantly in his first season. The club must continue to support him.

“well mannered / factually correct / topical”. That would be a novelty.

  10. It’s often said that history repeats itself and I remember living in Dundee in 1987.

United were in the Uefa cup final and the Scottish cup final.

Admittedly the old UEFA was over 2 legs but they ended up losing both.

Come on history, Huns recent record in finals is not great.

Hopefully many bears will miss the Scottish cup final as they will be locked away in custody in Spanish jails .

  12. From last thread – missed the cut over as usual!

thanks for that on CJ, my view was from Jungle and I left before the kids came on. Just looked a bit ominous to us in 406. Good news I got that wrong

I see the Daily Express and the huns are manning the barricades due to Glasgow based MSP’s not signing a motion for Bigot bell, there are probably a few on here who’ll be looking to make political capital from that decision.

    Personally I’m delighted, GIRUT.

  15. Two wishes for tomorrow.

    1) huns are beaten (well preferably).

    2) all their support is escorted en masse from my favourite European city (never to darken its tapas bars again).

What’s that about, anybody, thanks. por cierto

  17. Celtic won the league, Celtic fans are over the moon that Celtic have won the league, just everybody remember that and don’t let the potential of a good result for Sevco spoil your Summer, of course I want Frankfurt to beat them but it will spoil nothing for me if it doesnt happen.

  18. Of course no one has asked the question: Why has it been deemed necessary to make all these pleas that the Hun Hordes behave themselves?

Regardless, if they win, I actually don`t expect much in the way of trouble ( and even if there is, I expect even less in the reporting thereof).

  19. fieldofdrams on

I saw Souness and Gough pleading with the hordes to behave “for the sake of the headlines” and nothing to do with just being decent human beings!

    Is it me?

  20. Genuinely hope they win nothing this season.

Perhaps poor taste, but should we start a sweep stake on

    A) what day and time the press/media in Scotland announce the inevitable trouble. (They are normally forced to when local press call it out)

    B) What the final total number of arrests will be outwith the stadium and inside to the nearest hundred?

    C) What will be the most bizarre excuse the msm will come up with for the violence ?

Ps Frankfurt are 13/10 to win in 90 mins….
