16 years ago today Larsson poured millions into Celtic bank

201

16 years ago today, a cameo performance from Henrik Larsson just after the hour mark, brought Barcelona their second Champions League title.  His two assists were enough to overcome the lead 10-man Arsenal held.

Celtic fans celebrated that title as that win ensured we gained entry to the following season’s Champions League group stage without having to endure the qualification rounds.  As a consequence, the club booked two summer tours, one to the USA and one to Japan, each earning multi-million pound pay cheques.  A year earlier, the best on offer was perfunctory warm-up games against Fulham, Leicester and Leeds.

The commercial department has already lined up a lucrative Australian tour for the World Cup break later this year.  After media coverage of the tile win in Australia this week, the optics of that tour now look great.  The challenge now is to fill dates in July and August with similar earners

Much of the world is still slumbering from post-lockdown blues, which has dampened appetite for the commercial risk surrounding events.  Still, the earning opportunities from pre-qualification is a substantial benefit to a club like Celtic.

Can you name the two who started that Barcelona-Arsenal Champions League final and who also played for Celtic?

  1. Any truth in the rumour , the park benches have been removed from George square . Curious

  2. Fill up July and August with similar earners?! Any chance we could actually be prepared for the Champions League instead? Or do we get two games in and state that we are better off in the Conference League? Board bonuses already assured though…

  4. I would say to most have a read at end of last blog.

    Genuine Celts will get it

The sort I spent Saturday with and the sort you wouldn’t mind shaking the hand of on meeting at CP.

  5. I sadly am old enough to recall the last time huns played Eintracht, 12 -3 to the Germans, who were demolished in the final at Humpdump by a brilliant Real Madrid.

Same again I trust, not that I don’t care about the Ayebroke scum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Although I wish them well, the. departure of Nir and Rog to pastures new has left us thin on the ground for experienced midfielders, both at the ideal ages of 29 and 31. We have of course the wonderful Calm McGregor who is fixture in mid, can we expect to see James McCarthy getting more gametime ? The Japenese lads are largely untested and will be interesting to see their form after the badly needed rest in the close season. Congrats to Ange on yet another well deserved award.

I saw Souness and Gough pleading with the hordes to behave “for the sake of the headlines” and nothing to do with just being decent human beings!

From earlier – anyone heard of any confirmed pre-season games / dates in Austria / Switzerland?

There is a chance – ahem – that me and WeeBGFC may actually be – entirely coincidentally – in that general vicinity (Southern Bavaria en-route to Rrrrrrrome) for one-day only at the start of July.

Trying to engineer entire family summer holiday arrangements around a single pre-season friendly in the Alps.

Shhhhhhhhh, don’t tell Mrs BGFC :-))

AT – yes, agree – good if it can be kept mainly ‘Celtic’ on ye olde CQN. Everyone has opinions on other things of course, and it is a free speech blog (within the limits of the ‘no swearies’ rule) . Agree that the endless non-Celtic political repetitions can make you want to switch the record – everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course, but surely there is no need to go on like a broken record about it. A ‘no racism’ rule would be good if Paul / Mods thought that was needed, but you can see the definitional arguments that would engender.

I do wonder about James – would like to see him get time on the park but you wonder about his ability to fit into the blizzard that is Ange’s preferred style of football. Definitely a place, as you say, for his experience.

  12. AT,

In my opinion, one of the more glaring examples of casual racism, sexism and misogyny is on the after dinner speech circuit.

How many have laughed along for years., without walking out

Perhaps it’s these regular attendees that you should be pointing the finger at.

They are indeed a bit strange. Trying not to care about tomorrow for the sake of my cousin and my sister’s man who are Bears but it is probably more for my sanity😎

Would be great to see the water cannons rolled out and the bears and bearettes blasted up and down the streets of Seville. Failing that I’d settle for a Frankfurt win.

Hope ye had a great time Saturday mate.

The dinner party circuit thing I attended in a comp capacity, last one 92,never been to any since.to me they were dated then ,wheeltapperish and shunters social club if you like,a diff comedian updating the Bernard manning 70s guff.since then it’s been Celtic do’s

But,as Quadrophenian posted the old breaking o bread and wine listening to somebody havering is an ancient habit.

    Always looking to improve Celtic.

As long as we are knowledgeable on what is going on in the events diaries at all venues under our name we are OK.

  16. I’m sure it has already been pointed out but the rogues gallery of ex zombie players pleading for good behaviour is about one thing only – the case fir the defence when they are up in front of UEFA in the summer.

‘We did all we could, please just fine us, please don’t close our stadium or ban us from Europe.

But hey, tens of thousands of entitled orcs drinking all day in blazing temperatures. What could possibly go wrong?

  17. BGFC…………..Would James McCarthy cope with as you say, Ange’s blizzard tactics ? Rog was the action man and I thought Nir had a great season overall, cool, calm and confident and survived the blizzard.

I agree. Also believe this forms the thinking behind no ibrox beam back.

  19. What is the Starz on

    So..

    The following is true..

I retired recently and myself and she who must be obeyed are off on a type of reverse “gap year”.Starting off with a couple of months in Paris. (We will spend some time in Seville later in the year and had commented on how lucky we were not to do it the other way around). So today we went to visit a museum dedicated to the liberation of Paris and the French Resistance etc….afterwards

We are sitting outside a fashionable restaurant on the Boulverard Montparnasse and from across the street I hear the dulcet tones of glaswegian jakies belting out The Billy Boys…I kid you not…4 manky huns in full regalia on the opposite side of the road..On their way to Seville I presume…Fascists salutes et Al.. and we have just come from the Musee De Liberation De Paris..Even my wife (who sometimes think I exaggerate their awfulness) was appalled..Well especially just coming from the museum where we read about brave young men and women who were tortured and died by The Master Race….They are truly Special

  20. I`ve got a feeling many CQNers will be disappointed if the Huns step out of character and actually behave reasonably well.

  21. Weebobbycollins on

Hot Smoked…I’m sure they’ll behave impeccably. They will have taken the advice of Graeme, Richard, Ian, Ally and Chris Sutton…

    :-)

  22. I’ll not be watching any of the Hun stuff , golf range safest bet as no telly …. just ignore all of it … what will be will be … don’t waste any energy on that shower

I would be pleasantly surprised if they behave as it prevents the great folk of Sevilla (who were so welcoming to me and quite a few thousand others of our support) from suffering their antics, but, I just don’t see it happening whether they win or lose.

  24. hot smoked

There do seem to be more than a few who are not only predicting chaos in Seville but looking forward to it. The latter sentiment is misplaced. Don’t forget when Liverpool supporters were held responsible in the main for the disaster of Heysel in 1985 Everton, the best team in England by far were banned from Europe for years, as were Spurs, Manchester United and even Southampton who had qualified for the UEFA Cup. That said, just heard Roddy (Debenture) Forsyth on Radio 5 extolling the efforts of Rangers supporters against Franco’s police back in 1972. Not quite as hot in Seville as in 2003, or in 1982 when Scotland played Brazil, but hot enough to make drinking all day a recipe for a Euro ban. Just lets hope, if there is Caos, and El Desorden, and El Desconcierto that UEFA accept that the Bhoys were not part of El Boyuyu,
