16 years ago today Larsson poured millions into Celtic bank

201

16 years ago today, a cameo performance from Henrik Larsson just after the hour mark, brought Barcelona their second Champions League title.  His two assists were enough to overcome the lead 10-man Arsenal held.

Celtic fans celebrated that title as that win ensured we gained entry to the following season’s Champions League group stage without having to endure the qualification rounds.  As a consequence, the club booked two summer tours, one to the USA and one to Japan, each earning multi-million pound pay cheques.  A year earlier, the best on offer was perfunctory warm-up games against Fulham, Leicester and Leeds.

The commercial department has already lined up a lucrative Australian tour for the World Cup break later this year.  After media coverage of the tile win in Australia this week, the optics of that tour now look great.  The challenge now is to fill dates in July and August with similar earners

Much of the world is still slumbering from post-lockdown blues, which has dampened appetite for the commercial risk surrounding events.  Still, the earning opportunities from pre-qualification is a substantial benefit to a club like Celtic.

Can you name the two who started that Barcelona-Arsenal Champions League final and who also played for Celtic?

So The Celtic Truss is in turmoil

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What has Liz Truss got to do with Celtic?

    Maybe another Freudian slip?

Scrap the protocol, I hear the Unionists cry (Ulster Unionists / BoJo Unionists = not Scottish Unionists)

  2. When a plumber joins pipes together using a union, is he a Unionist.???????😀

  3. Archie MacPherson was on BBC Scotland’s ‘The Nine’ last night, reminiscing about being in Barcelona in 1972. What was quite interesting is that the Euro Cup Winners Cup final, ( a tourney Rangers got into through the back door having lost to a terrific Celtic side after a Scottish Cup final replay in 1971) was not live in Scotland on the night. Scotland played Wales at Hampden the same evening and the SFA put the kaibosh on events from Spain being shown. Was shown on delay after the fact, denying one and all the opportunity of viewing their greatest ever player being handed the trophy in the Nou Camp cludgie. Memories are made of this.

So the seville police are expecting 100,000 rangers fans….isn’t this based on the celtic support in 2003 ??….after all thats surely the easiest way to calculate before hand……I remember a stat in 2003 something like a tenth of air traffic in the world was headed to seville!!….but 100,000 huns now seems to be the figure that will be used

  5. Complaint sent to the BBC regarding the Scottish segment of Breakfast stating benches were damaged in George square due to football fans last year, umbrella terms rather than specifics, I know why I dont need to wonder.

Can any of their output on anything be relied on as based on fact?

Old Jim Mooney that I worked with, and who had trained at Celtic Park in the early 60s always used this as a torment for the huns in our work.

You only got in cos Celtic won everything, he called it “the runners up cup”.

He would also volunteer that Celtic should have been allowed to enter two teams and our reserves would have won the Cup Winners Cup as our second team were that good.

I hope they get pumped tonight, wall to wall tv coverage that is just sickening.

  7. It is all a numbers game … Part 42

We took 80K going on 100K to Seville.

So the TFOD2.1 must take 100K / no 150K to Seville today.

That is the way the Scottish media works / that is the way Scottish society works.

Back in the day — 1967 Coal Lorry parade around P/head.

Crowd was given out as 60K / 65K and we all rejoiced.

1972 Coal Lorry parade around Ibrox and guess what?

The media had to put out the crowd as 70K to get one over on us.

No idea what the actual crowd was but no matter the reality the published crowd had to be bigger than anything associated with us.

MIB news — they really are working every angle.

CL qualifier — did the Swedes get a man sent off in both legs?

Euro football — at times I think that certain teams can get the opposition reduced to 10 men almost to order.

I fear that by using every angle at their disposal TFOD2.1 will be very competitive tonight.

Their low key capitulation in the SPL this season would suggest that they were working another route into the CL — and working that route to the max taking help from whatever source could be persuaded to help them.

Euro coverage of actual games is more of a niche thing these days, tonight’s final on BT Sport rather than BBC or ITV for instance. Costs £25 for a monthly BT pass, thanks but no thanks. I noticed last wee that BT had sold its’ Sports division, (retains a share) to Eurosport, which is of course now part of Warner Bros, which may mean more money going into the CL in the near future. Who knows, we might benefit.

I don`t think anyone will be blaming you !

Like most (all?) Tims, I never wanted Rangers to win and I feel the same about Old Firm FC. Malmo, to an extent, and tonight even more so, my desire to see them defeated is increased because of the financial differences a victory would mean.

Hope all is well with you.

We are very fortunate in Ireland that the ‘council telly’ always strike a broadcast deal. Virgin or RTE always have euro games on , just maybe not Celtic.

i stopped paying for BT about 3 years ago; my business case was that i would be at Celtic home games and I had the option of the CSC or Hesgoal if the Celtic game was not on at home.

Only fly in the ointment was that sometimes they advertised Celtic and showed Spurs; cue a panic to connect laptop to TV.

Now that Hesgoal has stopped doing Euro games, I might be in the pub a bit more , which I was trying to avoid. Not paying BT as well as Sky

I have read that article before and the most surprising aspect for me was to discover a Hun with Humour.

Coincidentally, last night I was watching a programme about Dark Matter.

PS Dark matter would be an appropriate name for the Ibrox mob and their MSSM lap dogs.

    Cheerio for now.

A final is a terrible way to end a competition. I think they should hold it before the semi final – that way the game can be played without any pressure.

I say this safe in the knowledge that if you disagree with me it’s not because it’s potentially a terrible idea, but because you are not a visionary like me.

Don’t they say dark matter takes up 80% of the universe?

I think the Huns take up enough space as it is.

  18. I think in real astro phyics terms, Dark Matter today is not the same dark matter as yesterday, because that is in the process of liquidation

  19. I’m not on twitter for a long time but it might be an idea for these vids to be posted to those in the news outlets, and the bbc tenfold group of fans in attendance if the videos are being pr out of view. Channel 4 aren’t afraid to report news.

Playing out 120 minutes of football to a goalless draw knowing you will lose the tie because you lost out in the pre match penalties.

Which of those two scenarios involves more pressure?

Which offers a more exciting and interesting game for spectators?

  23. Can we scale back the reports from Seville for the time being?

It all seems a bit petty and pathetic.

If it kicks off properly, fine, we’ll get to claim the moral high ground though the locals will have to suffer it.

If it doesn’t then then the pre match build up makes us look stupid.
