2 European Cups and 10 in a row

942

I may have told you this before, apologies if I’m repeating myself.  Around 20 years ago, in a TV studio minutes after a Rangers victory, a former captain, Terry Butcher (what ever happened to him?), told the audience, “David Murray will not stop until he’s won two European Cups and 10 in a row.”

Use of the personal term “he”, not the club name, struck me.  Murray was personally invested in this matter.  Such a burning desire did not make David Murray a bad person, he owned the dominant club in Glasgow, but the team he was dominating had all that glorious history.  If the boot was on the other foot, you’d want the same.  I would.

Perhaps if Jock Stein had stayed at Hibs, Celtic would have stayed in mediocrity, David Murray would have had a more affordable dream and the liquidation of his club would not have been necessary.

You know it’s true…….

On Tuesday’s STV report that Hearts manager, John McGlynn, said:

“How many fans would think they could win the league if Celtic weren’t in it at this stage? All [clubs’] fans would.

“That would cause great excitement and I think it would bring fans back to the game, at the lower clubs.

“If you look at the rest of us outside Rangers and Celtic, we’d all fill our stadiums if we thought we’d realistically have a chance of winning the league.”

There are screeds written and spoken about our game but the McGlynn Plan is the most productive comment I’ve read all year.  Well done to STV for the report, hopefully they will put the same questions to others in the league. This is the most important question for Scottish football right now.

It’s time for these clubs to throw off their downtrodden ways and genuinely compete for the Scottish title.

Still looking for a ticket for Celtic v Barcelona?   Equally keen to acquire a Wee Oscar wristband?  A CQN’er has very generously offered his ticket for next week to raise funds for the Wee Oscar Campaign.  You can bid for the ticket/wristband package on ebay.

Tell everyone who asks you for a ticket to bid on the auction.

Murdochbhoy – Brilliant. It was a bit like that Cantona kick or Prescott lamping that guy who threw an egg at him. Idiots think they’re entitled to abuse public figures, but are shocked – shocked – when they push back. (thumbsup)

  7. Remember playing a ‘friendly’ (!!) match for my old school against St Joseph’s College, Dumfries in the late 60s-early 70s – still run by the Marist Brothers at the time, Brother Walfrid being one of the founders I believe.

Saw a piece in the redtops this morning about BTB being the first Englishman to contract Rangeritis ,it got me thinking as to the symptoms of this affliction .

    A fear of paying taxes

    Falling over when not touched

    Talking gibberish

IQ level falling below that of an onion

Mood swings (rage to fawning )

    Obsession with the colour orange

Tourettes (usually when faced with a catholic )

Any other suggestions ,maybe we could get the top 10 symptoms so we can spot this dreadful disease from spreading

A few years back I had an idea for a song to be played at Celtic Park, on or around Christmas. The song itself was ‘Ring out the Solstice Bells’, by Jethro Tull. The idea included everybody attending the match being given one of those little handbells, you know like the ones found in Downton Abbey, or more likely in Philvisreturns’ dining room. Anyways, the idea was predicated, (if I can use that word) on my belief that bells in hand, the crowd would automatically segue into the ‘Bells of Hell……’

But that was before the ‘Offensive Behaviour at Football Act’

A wee point about Catholics in Cabinets – John Reid was in Tony Blair’s Cabinet and took us to war with Iraq. Tony himself later converted to Catholicism. Jim Murphy was in the Cabinet as well was he not at the time?

No one in the SNP supported it. John Swinney had his first marriage annulled to marry his current wife in the Catholic Church in 2003 and he’s in the cabinet. If they were the rampant bigots some folk want to paint them as, Swinney would have been nowhere near the Cabinet.

Being a Catholic is no guarantee of wisdom nor is being religious in any shape or form. Is everyone in the current SNP or ConDEM cabinet a practicing religious person? I have no Idea and nor do I care. I don’t vote for people based on their religion.

I don’t care what someone’s religion is, I care about their competence – that is a bigger issue in government. Besides plenty people say they are a (insert religion here) but are they really? Do they practice what they preach or is it just another label to appeal to people to whom it does matter?

    *********************************************

You have just made the same argument That the old RFC made for a 100 years we dont care about religion we dont operate sectarian employment practices, we just could not find a Catholic good enough to play for RFC.

Your argument is the same I agree we should not vote on the basis of religion but I find it strange since the Scottish Parliament was formed not 1 Catholic has made it in to the SNP shadow cabinet and cabinet since 1999, now they may not be a Catholic good enough, just like RFC claimed but I do find it strange not 1 has sneaked in.

  24. Good news they got booted out of the league cup last night if they had pulled it off we would have heard from the laptop loyal endless talk about a pseudo SPL club languishing in the 3rd division

Thems getting through would have been Manna from Heaven for the rags we would have heard and read much crap about the psuedo SPL club getting Celtic in the draw until the draw was made and even if they did not draw Celtic we would have heard and read endless crap about a possible (now defunct term) Old Firm final.

For the life of me I can not understand those Celtic supporters who wanted to see them go through a situation ole pr Chuck and his media cohorts would have milked to death

Thankfully a mid table SPL club with the cajones and class to ignore the Ibrox hordes home advantage prevailed

If we ever play them again let it be at our place in an earlier round

I am one Celtic supporter – I hope one of many – who is looking forward to at least one ‘Rangers-free’ season, when our atmosphere will not be polluted by their sectarian bile – tolerated by Stathclyde Police – and when opposing players will not ‘crap’ in our dressing-room bath.
