2 European Cups and 10 in a row

942

I may have told you this before, apologies if I’m repeating myself.  Around 20 years ago, in a TV studio minutes after a Rangers victory, a former captain, Terry Butcher (what ever happened to him?), told the audience, “David Murray will not stop until he’s won two European Cups and 10 in a row.”

Use of the personal term “he”, not the club name, struck me.  Murray was personally invested in this matter.  Such a burning desire did not make David Murray a bad person, he owned the dominant club in Glasgow, but the team he was dominating had all that glorious history.  If the boot was on the other foot, you’d want the same.  I would.

Perhaps if Jock Stein had stayed at Hibs, Celtic would have stayed in mediocrity, David Murray would have had a more affordable dream and the liquidation of his club would not have been necessary.

You know it’s true…….

On Tuesday’s STV report that Hearts manager, John McGlynn, said:

“How many fans would think they could win the league if Celtic weren’t in it at this stage? All [clubs’] fans would.

“That would cause great excitement and I think it would bring fans back to the game, at the lower clubs.

“If you look at the rest of us outside Rangers and Celtic, we’d all fill our stadiums if we thought we’d realistically have a chance of winning the league.”

There are screeds written and spoken about our game but the McGlynn Plan is the most productive comment I’ve read all year.  Well done to STV for the report, hopefully they will put the same questions to others in the league. This is the most important question for Scottish football right now.

It’s time for these clubs to throw off their downtrodden ways and genuinely compete for the Scottish title.

Still looking for a ticket for Celtic v Barcelona?   Equally keen to acquire a Wee Oscar wristband?  A CQN’er has very generously offered his ticket for next week to raise funds for the Wee Oscar Campaign.  You can bid for the ticket/wristband package on ebay.

Tell everyone who asks you for a ticket to bid on the auction.

can someone please explain to me how a company can go into liquidation to run away from debt but yet retain all of their assets like the stadium, players etc??

From the Glasgow Herald this morning:

“Lord Hodge was asked to allow Duff & Phelps to exit as administrators with partners from accountancy and audit firm BDO, James Stephen and Malcolm Cohen, overseeing the winding up of the old firm.

    Wishful thinking?

  4. Rangers in liquidation. “The Rangers” struggling under a poor manager and providing endless entertainment with their ongoing struggles. And Celtic top of the league with a visit from Barcelona to come.

    What’s wrong with Scottish football??

There’s a bar called JJ’s that will show it. My mate Smiddy works there and is also a good tim so there’s no way he’d miss it either so any fans of english clubs will be sent to the British club to watch any of their teams. Tell him Marc & Nicole sent you and a few free pints will come your way!

  7. I was quite impressed by Hearts last night. They are a strong team and they didn`t panic when they had a player sent off.

It was an interesting comment from John McGlynn however only seven years ago Hearts were talking about winning titles and success in Europe. :-)

Many happy returns to Blantyre Tim, who gets to share his dumps with Shere Hite. There are so many puns in that one, that I’m giong to leave it right there.

No worries mate. Spoke to the missus there (she lived out there) and she has just asked Smiddy and he confirmed the game will be on in either JJ’s or the Ramada but JJ’s is an Irish bar so still would be a good starting point for a few pints

Fortunately the media playing down or ignoring it doesn’t change what has happened.

  18. The Daily Record:

End of an era as Oldco Rangers go into liquidation By Jack Mathieson

THE curtain came down on 140 years of history yesterday as Oldco Rangers were formally liquidated at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

  19. I had the dubious “honour” of actually being in attendance at Snake Mountain last night and I left absolutely raging.

Absolutely raging they were put out and we wouldn’t get them in the next round.

The Rangers aren’t a 3rd Division team, I would probably put them as a decent 2nd Division side. 3-0 was flattering as ICT absolutely and utterly stuffed them.

McCulloch and Little up front was hilarious. The Inverness defence absolutely strolled against them, they were never in any danger. Their midfield is lightweight, slow and lacking in technical ability. I kept a particular eye on this MacLeod youngster they all rave about. I thought his distribution was poor, first touch dreadful. To me he lacked a bit of pace aswell. Basically the sort of player who would maybe make the bench in the 1st Division. SPL? No way.

I will reserve special criticism for their defence. I haven’t stopped laughing at that yet. Cribari is a joke in socks. McCoist trialled this guy then signed him. He is absolutely woeful. Poor in the air, lacks heart, can’t jump, can’t mark, poor tackler, poor distribution. ICT could have scored with every attack, they were actually just showboating by the end.

As for their manager, he must be given more time, he hasn’t quite perfected his mono-tactic of long diagonal ball to McCulloch. ICT had sussed that prior to kick off yet Fat Sally persisted with it for 90mins. What a guy. What a tactician. What a Legned. Expect the Uncle Walter SOS to be sent out today.

My absolute best part of the night was the contrast between the defiance pre-match, led by McCoist who actually thought this team was at that level, to the massive reality bite by the end. Looking around I could see on the faces that the wee bears knew just how far they had fallen and how far behind us they are now.

2 choice quotes heard on the way out:

“we’d still gie the Taigs a gemme”

“14,000 more than the Brendanbeu last night. We are still the only show in town”

And that my friends is why they are deid…..

  20. The Milngavie Herald:

    Old Rangers officially liquidated

Oldco Rangers has formally entered liquidation after the move was approved by a senior judge.

Insolvency firm BDO has been appointed to wind up the company, now known as RFC 2012 plc.

The move brings to an end the period of administration by Duff and Phelps, which began in February this year.

The Glasgow club went into administration after the taxman lodged a petition over the non-payment of tax to the tune of millions of pounds.

Liquidation was given the green light by judge Lord Hodge at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, after a day-long hearing on the issue.

Duff and Phelps had gone to the court themselves, seeking an order to end the firm’s time as administrators and asking for the oldco to be handed to liquidators.

The court heard that the move, opposed at this stage by lawyers Collyer Bristow, would involve the handover to liquidators of £1.7 million in cash and other assets.

I can’t share your optimism for wanting to stuff a Third Division team. That somehow gives Sevco credence they do not deserve.

Sevco will never be our rivals. Beating East Stirlingshire has as much appeal for me – and I would take little pleasure out of that.
