2 European Cups and 10 in a row

942

I may have told you this before, apologies if I’m repeating myself.  Around 20 years ago, in a TV studio minutes after a Rangers victory, a former captain, Terry Butcher (what ever happened to him?), told the audience, “David Murray will not stop until he’s won two European Cups and 10 in a row.”

Use of the personal term “he”, not the club name, struck me.  Murray was personally invested in this matter.  Such a burning desire did not make David Murray a bad person, he owned the dominant club in Glasgow, but the team he was dominating had all that glorious history.  If the boot was on the other foot, you’d want the same.  I would.

Perhaps if Jock Stein had stayed at Hibs, Celtic would have stayed in mediocrity, David Murray would have had a more affordable dream and the liquidation of his club would not have been necessary.

You know it’s true…….

On Tuesday’s STV report that Hearts manager, John McGlynn, said:

“How many fans would think they could win the league if Celtic weren’t in it at this stage? All [clubs’] fans would.

“That would cause great excitement and I think it would bring fans back to the game, at the lower clubs.

“If you look at the rest of us outside Rangers and Celtic, we’d all fill our stadiums if we thought we’d realistically have a chance of winning the league.”

There are screeds written and spoken about our game but the McGlynn Plan is the most productive comment I’ve read all year.  Well done to STV for the report, hopefully they will put the same questions to others in the league. This is the most important question for Scottish football right now.

It’s time for these clubs to throw off their downtrodden ways and genuinely compete for the Scottish title.

Still looking for a ticket for Celtic v Barcelona?   Equally keen to acquire a Wee Oscar wristband?  A CQN’er has very generously offered his ticket for next week to raise funds for the Wee Oscar Campaign.  You can bid for the ticket/wristband package on ebay.

Tell everyone who asks you for a ticket to bid on the auction.

All this Catholic talk recalls an amusing incident a few years ago.

Hunnish cyberspace insisted that their then-manager Paul Le Guen was a “Hugenot”. (thumbsup)

I think you may have misheard them…. what I think they said was that he was a ‘huge knob’

But, even if they wont admit it, I bet they wish they had him back now!

PS… why ‘returns’ when you are always on here (that is, never away?)

I like Cracow and have friends living In the city.

My last visit to the city changed my opinion on some of the living there.

When me, oldtim and blantyretim went to the pub I had strange short discussion with the waiter.

That was two years back after plane crash in Smolensk. That was also just after Wisla lost the championship in the last game. Their player scored own goal in injury time. I wanted the chat started and said to the waiter: it’s unbelievable how you lost your championship in injury time?

He answered: I don’t care about football. This is for the plebs.

After that he asked the question: where do you come from?

I said: I’m from Warsaw, Legia fan. My friends are from Scotland, Celtic fans.

He told: Yes, you know, It’s in your village Warsaw that decides about our lives. An charlady decides that Kaczynski must be buried at Wawel and we can’t argue with her decision.

Here you have some of them. I asked oldtim and blantyretim to leave their milk and water not finished on the table and leave the place with me.

One of the problems facing the Unionists is their belief that even if Scotland achieves independence, everything else stays the same. Great Britain, the United kingdom, permanent seat on the Security Council, and continued membership of the EU. Given the SNP’s policy to remain under the Crown, it is possible to argue, that a form of UK could continue, as in the 1603-49 and 1660-1689 periods, but Great Britain would no longer exists. One “expert”, last week, a Lord Advocate or whatever, argued that there was no need to go all the way back to 1707, raising the question, why does Scotland need a referendum at all? An article in the Washington Post yesterday suggested that should Scotland achieve independence, the UK (of Great Britain&Northern Ireland) could lose its’ seat on said Security Council. Of course, England could revert back to the 1649-1660 era and restore the Commonwealth. That, of course would mean the end of the monarchy south of the border. Maybe Liz could move to Balmoral!

That’s my point. It’s a label, normal stuck on at birth/baptism. It means nothing. I’d like to distance Hitler from Catholicism too but it’s a waste of time.

  8. MikeinToronto – good man, get right back up on that horse, so to speak. I was going to ask if you knew what are the good spots downtown for food these days? I don’t get down that often anymore and hate to take chances.

You are 100% correct re Roddy Forsyth, Rangers FC investor as was. Does annoy me though that he is allowed to peddle the “Old Firm” nonsense via the BBC, and in particular Radio 5. Did enjoy his updates from Ayebroke last night though!

Mike in Toronto – I think you’re being a bit unfair to Opus Dei agent Le Guen.

The man was a gentleman. If he hadn’t tried to wrestle the Buckfast and Monster Munch out of Captain Bazza’s mitts, history could have been different and Rangers FC might still be alive today.

True, but I don’t like when hear that Hitler was Catholic. He was baptised but not Catholic.

I could put couple of quotes where he stated that wanted all religions vermined.

Hitler killed 30 percent of Polish clergy during the war. The Jews, the Romany and the priests were first to die.

I immediately categorise people who use the word “ass” instead of “arse” or “erse”. The latter two are much stronger so when anyone (other than Americans) uses the US version, I form an opinion, of sorts, of the character of said person.

I notice someone at the bbc isn’t ‘on messsage’ with the orwellian MSM lie that they are still, somehow, the same club:

‘Ally McCoist says the new Rangers’ defeat by Inverness Caley Thistle on the day the “oldco” formerly entered liquidation shows how far they have to go to return to the top flight.’

    Interesting post ——–

I recently had to renew my Italian Identity card .

The relevant bureaucracy means that that I have to choose between being British or English [ being Scottish is not an option ].

Had a brief chat with the guy who took my details _______

    ” Place of birth ?” —–Glasgow .

“Ah Scottish . I read there is to be a referendum about independence there . Just imagine the fun we Italian bureaucrats will have with you if it happens .All our treaties are with Britain ..”

I am concerned he may have a point

  25. Canamalar, do you actually get feedback from people who claim to detest philvis??

Jeez, it’s a ‘footy’ blog with very few nasty comments. How easily upset are they?
