2012 all over again as clubs ponder

208

It feels like 2012 all over again. Supporters of all clubs and Celtic (of yes they were) on one side, the SPFL (SPL), SFA and directors of other clubs opposing. Back then, the issue was whether SPL accession rules should be changed to allow an applicant football club, then known as Sevco Scotland, to be invited into the top flight of Scottish football.

The proposal was eventually rejected 10-1, with Rangers voting in favour of allowing the applicant and Kilmarnock abstaining, but that result wasn’t always likely. For months the league debated this issue and Celtic stood alone. It wasn’t until fans made their wishes known that others had an epiphany: good governance is important.

The official line from the SFA can be parsed as: those who are up to their necks in this scandal have absolutely no appetite to discuss it anymore, and a solicitor has told us this is OK.

Where are you Aberdeen, Dundee United, Dundee, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Queen of the South, St Johnstone? Do not for a minute think they are all waiting on guidance from the SPFL – they’re not.

Right now, clubs across Scotland are asking themselves what to do about the most serious cheating in Scottish football history. It would be wrong to characterise all of them as wanting to protect those they have mixed with for decades. Some have reacted like this, others just don’t know what to do.

It is the job of their fans to shine a light on the road ahead.

What will have to forced through first; reform of the SFA or review of RFC cheating?

    ——-

    Excellent question.

For me the cheating has been allowed to happen BECAUSE of the culture. Likewise with the LNS sham result.

But when the president comes out with that crass statement about needing a strong Rangers after all that has happened…..

Let’s say I’m not holding my breath.

  5. HAMILTONTIM @ 11:54 AM,

So we are approaching the end of the journey, a bankrupt football club, a licence that should never have been awarded, a continuity lie so big it defies all logic, a corrupted and compromised national association, a self interested national league, a sham of an investigation with terms of reference so narrow as to obfuscate natural justice and to keep everything running smoothly a compliant media perfectly coordinated and on message.

And for what? To maintain the business model? Is that it? Fear of the bully boys? Social unrest? A TV deal?

I’m heartened to hear of Aberdeen and Dundee Utd fans speaking out as they purchase a large percentage of the tickets for Scotland international games and if there’s one thing likely to cause panic in the corridors of hampden (other than BRT&Hs suggestion of unsettling their sponsors) it’s an empty national stadium when Scotland play.

The clubs must act. The fact they won’t until forced to by the fans tells its own story.

The Arabtrust statement about the Supreme Court decision is on facebook.

I checked te comments from the United fans under the statement. The majority of whom were against any further action as they had enough of their own problems to deal with.

One guy regrets the fact United fans were always on good terms with fans of other clubs including the huns (he said Rangers) and thinks its a bad idea for United fans to get involved in the stripping of titles campaign.

I wonder if anyone will remind some United fans of the McCurry game or the league cup final against the now defunct club where United were denied a stonewall penalty and eventually lost the game. Both these matches had EBT recipients playing against United.

  9. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Incredible. Said to a mate the other day that two years from now the MSM would have re-written history to say that Craig Whyte had been responsible for the EBTs. Just read today’s etims and it looks like it’s happened already!

  10. Just last year, Usain Bolt was stripped of his 2008 4×100 relay gold medal after one of his team-mates tested positive for a banned substance.

His reaction was “I am not fully happy about the situation but rules are rules” (see http://www.hindustantimes.com/other-sports/usain-bolt-returns-gold-medal-says-rules-are-rules-after-doping-sanction/story-QJdBADcGoxut02nvLc4ULI.html)

I think that we can see what makes a great sportsman; no sense of entitlement.

The exiled tim, I agree that more emphasis should be placed on the improper registration of players, as football wise, that is the bigger issue .

All media stories are about the non payment of tax and natlional insurance contributions , which is right . The improper registration of players due to all financial renumeration each received not being disclosed has rarely , if ever , been mentioned by the media. To me this is the crux of the matter for any titles and cups won between 1998 -2010 to have an asterisk placed beside them.

The Knight of the Realm is not just guilty of one injustice , it is two. One to the general law abiding tax paying public , the other to football and cheating other clubs and their support.

Saidy Janko has joined St Etienne for an undisclosed fee.

Sorry if this has already been posted .

  14. Best wishes to THE MINX and HAMILTONTIM on their wedding day! Hope you have a great day and many happy years together.

  15. Firstly , best wishes to the happy couple. It will be my pleasure to buy you a drink someday.

    Paul 67,

    Your closing words.

“It is the job of their fans to shine a light on the road ahead.”

    ————————

I disagree. Its the job of the custodians of every club who was cheated to shine a light on the road ahead. Even its for no other reason than lost revenue.

History must reflect the fact that cheating was punished. There can be no brush big enough to sweep this under the carpet.

On another matter if any club wants Moussa then lets start the talking at £25m. That may be a good figure for a deposit.

If Romelu Lukaku is worth cira £75m then that is the basis for any dealings. However I hope we price clubs out in the medium term.

    HH to all.

Dallas Dallas @ 1.25…I believe most non-Celtic fans will not care a jot about the goings-on over in govan. It will still be seen as a ‘Celtic-rangers’ thing which doesn’t involve their clubs…remember the wrestling in the 60s and later WWF? People tuned in and turned out to watch something which wasn’t real. Most people don’t really care, they have too many problems of their own and football is just like a telly soap, entertainment, nothing else…there is now so much money floating around the game, it is inevitable that corruption abounds. We have seen it at every level of the game-ebts, brown envelopes, dodgy decisions, tax avoidance/evasion etc…even back in the 50s and 60s the manipulation of crowd numbers…How long until the first player demands £1 million per week? Not long now…obscene. Football is dying…A change has gotta come…but it may be too late for yours truly…

  18. fieldofdrams on

They still don’t get it – this from the DR website:

“Can someone please explain to me how any result on the field of play was affected by EBT payments?”, asks someone called Edward Lowe.

and here’s a sentiment with which we can all agree:

“Any further action (against Rangers) should result in a total boycott by fans of all away fixtures.”

Most towns and cities in Scotland would be a-ok with that!

  19. HamiltonTim and Minx, congratulations to you both.

    Health and happiness to you.

I’ll see you at the bar later, I’m having a pre-party beer in Newcastle, train at 14:55, home at 17:19, a couple on the train of course, then Miss Doc is driving Mrs Doc and I to the venue, if I appear a bit vague it’s just the beer:-)

So what’s the plan here? Deprive them of cash. So other clubs cut their cloth? FFS they’ve only been at the top table for one season.

And look how good Scottish club Euro results have been since then…

  21. Afternoon Ghents

Probably been brought up already, but I don’t have time to read back.

The teams that the Horribles knocked out of Europe should put a Financial claim into the SFA for loss of earnings due to them allowing an improperly registered players enter the tournament using their license.

Millions at stake here in comps

  22. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

I’m open to correction here, but I seem to recall that after the fans’ pressure on their respective boards, in 2012, the SPL took measures to ensure that this couldn’t happen again.

They formed an SPL ( SPFL) committee, of five or six, who would then be responsible for all decisions, thereby neutering the majority of chairmen.

Did that happen, or am I a chocolate eclair?

  23. Hamiltontim and the Minx……May your journey ahead be full of joy, happiness and laughter – and a few trophies, of course.

  27. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Weebobbycollins, sorry for the late reply.

Our biggest fight for justice could be the apathy of other clubs’ support to it .

My wife’s brother and son are St Mirren fans who have basically told me I am talking crap when I have tried to discuss the EBT’s and the resultant improper registration of players , with them.

The only non Celtic fan I work with who agrees the football authorities are at it, is a Motherwell fan who dislikes both Ibrox clubs even more than we do.

The other non Celtic fans think it is a tit for tat thing between ‘ o@@ f@@@’ fans.
