2012 was end of old ways, OF conspiracy theorists

434

One of today’s newspapers did its very best to run with a one’s as bad as the other’ suggestion, saying : “Yes, both sides have justifiable grievances. Celtic were rightly outraged at the state their stadium was left in. Likewise, the Rangers board were understandably disgusted at those mock executions of blow-up dolls draped in red, white and blue scarves.”

This is wholly misrepresenting the situation. Celtic were rightly outraged at the blow-up dolls, criticised the actions at the time while endorsing the behaviour of the fabled “vast majority”. Celtic don’t have a problem with self-analysis; they’ve done it often enough in recent seasons in the face of Uefa fines.

The blow-up doll incident, and the faux defence of it, which Celtic didn’t offer, has nothing whatsoever to do with who pays for tens of thousands of pounds worth of vandalism carried out by visiting fans at Celtic Park. You can make your own suggestions as to why it was raised in connection with the subject.

The article goes on to offer up evidence of the bigger story, which it somehow manages to miss.

“Rangers (sic.) believe they have every right to take the hump because Celtic have chosen to ignore years of protocol – an unwritten rule which has stood the test of time, whereby each club pays for damage done to its own stadium by opposing fans on derby day.”

Maybe, maybe not, but here’s the thing, whatever unwritten rules Celtic and Rangers observed died in 2012.

You want unwritten rules to persist? Pay your taxes, register your players correctly, make full and honest submissions to HMRC inquiries instead of shredding correspondence. Play by the rules everyone else has to play by.

Cheat, lie, hide and shred and you have no defence in written rules, never mind unwritten objects of your imagination. This reality should now be writ large for all to understand.

After the 1909 Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Rangers ended suspiciously in a draw, one astute observer noted that the clubs were acting in concert, like an Old Firm, in order to generate gate receipts from a replay.

With the permission of Oldco’s administrators, Newco were able to change their name to “Rangers”, but that act of an administrator cut no ice at Celtic Park, or most other Scottish grounds.

There is no Old Firm, it died in 2012. Celtic don’t use the phrase, they don’t observe unwritten rules they had in place with Rangers, they don’t want their stadium trashed, they don’t want to install “prison grade” facilities for visiting fans (this is what’s now required in Scotland in 2017, good grief!), they would happily never host the club again.

If you think all that happened in 2012 was a “relegation” (which you’d earlier reported was impossible), this might be news to you. It was more than this; it was the end of the old ways – and good riddance to them.

Celtic will stand of fall on our own merits. We will observe the laws and rules of the land, the tax authorities, the Association, Uefa and Fifa (even if it means criticising our own fans). If you’re looking for unwritten favours after vandalising our property: tough.

And for those who continually see O.F. conspiracies, none of them have ever been able to tell me a business case for Celtic to put life into that concept. It’s not good for business, no matter what the wildest conspiracy theorist might tell you.  Anyone who tells you it is needs to take a look at himself.

  6. AWE_NAW @ 3:30 PM,

Well, you could be right and I have been very critical of the Boards reluctance to spend and re-invest to ensure UCL Qualification.

For me they have turned a corner; securing a top Manager and his Coaching staff, signing players that must have bust our antiquated Salary Ceiling and giving control of transfers and player development to the appointed experts, makes us a much more ambitious Club.

We are seeing the dividends both on and off the Field.

I really can’t see the Board going back on this obviously successful strategy.

We’ll see but I’m backing us for UCL qualification for the foreseeable future.

    It had to be done.

I do not think the Sevco board sniggering while DD was 30,000 feet in the air had anything to do with the loss of faith in the greatest football manager and strategist and born hun skelper of all time Ronnie Deila. Nothing to do with him being the cheap option. There were guys who were even cheaper seemingly.

I will back us for UCL qualification this year. I certainly hope so as it´s the only Celtic games I watch

Player acquisition might stifle it for next year I stress might

But as I said earlier CL qualification will be closed to us anyway soon enough … that is where the huns come in

Join eurochamp67 in thanking you for the link to the GCC proposals re parking in and around Celtic Park/The Emirates. Yet another scam from Glasgow City Council and one aimed primarily at Celtic supporters attending games. In effect if we do not have a “permit” then we will liable to a fine/penalty for simply travelling to a certain part of Glasgow, that part happening to be in the East End. No doubt the Celtic Board will be all over it as an attack on the travelling support. Only a conspiracy theorist would dare to think otherwise!

    Hi, hail hail…hope yer well.

    Yeah, what it is…..

A wee while ago, you were speaking to someone on here and, during your conversation, you said that…

….”Fergus McCann set up Celtic PLC – to keep the fans on the outside.”

…Would you be kind enough to explain that ?…..

…Btw, I’m sorry that I don’t have the particular post in question – at hand – as I’m not one of those obsessive types who save folks posts in a folder under their bed so that they can then, use the posts to try to stick folk in at a convenient date in the future – like the clique operatives do.

Well It did have to be done, I think the lack of backing for NL & RD’s failure ensured a change of attitude. I’ve nothing personal against him and to be frank know little of the Man but When Mr Park went it signalled for me a knew improved regime.

If we have any chance of Competing in European Football and Maintaining our Club as major Football Team, we need the Club as a whole to match Brendan Rodgers Lofty Ambitions.

    Just a quick note.

They’re not illegally using the ‘Rangers’ name. Had it been the same owners then yes, there would be an issue.

However, because it was a new company with a whole new set of owners/directors it was legal for Green to seek and obtain permission from Duff & Phelps/BDO (can’t recall which) to use the name. Which they duly gave.

  16. Celtic Mac,

My reading of the proposal is,

You CANNOT get a permit to visit Celtic Park or the Emirates.

I would gladly pay £10 to maintain my current parking spot on Springfield Road.

  17. It’s ironic in fact that the only reason that they can pretend to be the same team is the fact that they’re a completely new team.

  18. What areas in and around Celtic Park, are the restrictions,of no parking, being enforced, and what is the reasons, behind it,I park in Glamis rd,the Bhoy Darren, watches my car,

  19. I know that no one on here KNOWS what Celtic`s real views are re Sevco. If one decides to select certain aspects (of Celtic`s action or inaction) then one can come to certain conclusions. Overall, though, it remains the case that no one on here KNOWS what Celtic`s real views are re Sevco.

That being so, it is a very poor show to be so abusive of those who interpret available information differently.

….”Fergus McCann set up Celtic PLC – to keep the fans on the outside.”

Did I say that? If I did, I can’t remember saying precisely that and, like you, unless it is a story etc that I have written I don’t store or keep my posts for posterity.

However, I have repeatedly said here, elsewhere and whenever I am asked about the PLC, that I do not think that the PLC structure could ever do what Fergus McCann said it was intended to in terms of securing fan ownership of the club.

Now, I have no idea whether or not Fergus meant what he said or whether he believed what he said, but at the time when I read the prospectus I simply did not believe and accept that going down the PLC route would ever result in it being an absolute certainty that the fans owned the club in the sense that 66% or whatever of the ownership would always remain with the ordinary fans — and that was what was being suggested at the time.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would not want Celtic to be governed or ran by a huge committee of fans or by a group of people whose credentials and ability to run the club are based on, and judged by, how many games they go to or how long they have supported the club. I would want whoever runs the club to hold the best business and footballing qualifications in terms of brains and ethos etc.

However, at the times of Fergus’ prospectus I took the view that what was being offered was a way in which fans and investors could buy shares which would ultimately give Fergus his financial return first and foremost (and I saw nothing wrong in that at all) and which would then create a generally owned PLC which would carry all the baggage that a PLC invariably comes with — and that does not and never has amounted to fan ownership, and could not guarantee such fan ownership as was being suggested at the time.

As it turned out, after the second share issue, by dint of the application of the companies acts, votes at AGM’s, and alterations to the memo and arts it now turns out that the vast majority of the shares in Celtic PLC are privately owned by just a few people and the majority of fans who own shares have a very minor say in the running of the club itself.

So, I suppose in that way the majority of the fans are locked out if that is the phrase that I used.

An alternative would have been to go down a membership route where a board is elected by members each year but where the ultimate ownsership of the shares belongs to a Trust who are no more than a holding vehicle for those shares and who do not run the club as such at all.

However, that route too is fraught with some difficulty and it may well have been that this route would not have attracted enough income or investment to secure either a return for Fergus or have resulted in “Celtic” raising enough cash to be good enough on the field.

What it would have done is to have created a different corporate structure which prevents real legal ownership from falling into the hands of just a few.

Fergus talked as if the new structure would effectively create a co-operative with the ordinary fans always owning a significant and and forceful number of shares in the company. Regrettably that was cobblers.

I don’t like the PLC model as a means of running a so called fan based club because legally it means no such thing. That is and always has been my gripe.

    Does that answer the question?
