20p per share may be last exit chance on Rangers Mark II

364

There was never any doubt that Honest Dave King would be ordered to make an £11m offer to minority shareholders in Newco Rangers after an enforcement today by the Takeover Appeals Board.

King’s counsel claimed he was “penniless” and unable to make good on the offer, which is a legal requirement on any individual or individuals acting in concert, acquire 30% of a company. I initially considered it was unlikely that many shareholders would accept the 20p price, but the Sinking Ship Scenario is in play. This may be shareholders last chance to recover any investment in Rangers Mark II.

Of course, none of this would have happened if they stuck with the Easdales and Mike Ashley, or Charles Green and Mike Ashley, of anyone else who was able to employ a Nomad or attract tens of millions of pounds investment.  But glib and shameless Geppetto wanted control and he pulled all the right strings.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the game tomorrow.

That makes very, very amusing reading.

The reality of Graeme Murty for the remainder of the season compared with the Daily Ridiculous `possibilities` is a perfect illustration of how the MSSM works where Sevco are concerned.

  2. As the tribute act across the city continue to implode, here’s a few thoughts on what the great Tommy Burns might make of our current dominance, with apologies in advance for the lengthy post

It’s the sun that takes the coat off, not the wind…..

So the unbeaten run came to an end, in emphatic and brutal, if not entirely unexpected fashion. The response from all quarters has been just about right, scathing in the assessment of Celtic performance at Tynecastle on the day, but sympathetic to a point, given the onerous nature of the players schedule this season. Simultaneously, the praise has rolled in for the incredible sequence of unbeaten performances that stretches back to the turn of the 16th century or thereabouts.

There have been comparative pieces written about this teams incredible record and how it stands up to other great Celtic sides. Brendan Rodgers role has been well documented – and rightly so – but I find myself wondering why Tommy Burns remains the dominant figure in my thoughts during this period of reflection.

You don’t write about a Celtic figure like Tommy Burns without a certain amount of apprehension, especially if you didn’t know the man on a personal level, which I didn’t. But just as Brendan Rodgers has developed an entertaining side to grace Celtic Park using methods not dissimilar to that of his old gaffer – and in many ways his mentor – it is legitimate to query if Tommy’s legacy is living on at Celtic in ways that we might not have originally conceived they would.

For all Rodgers was initially derided at Liverpool, wrongly in my opinion, for his use of pop psychology, he has actually bucked the trend of introspective, self regarding, faux intellectuals that dominate the footballing landscape in the UK and many parts of Europe. Rodgers is a serious football man, a straight talker who gets the best from his charges, even those who are not in the team.

He has stated quite openly that he observed Tommy closely at Reading, how he related to people and brought out the best in everyone, not just footballers. Those of us who bumped into Tommy as supporters, will relate to this, you did not come away quivering with deference; on the contrary, it felt like you had enjoyed a happy exchange with a heroic brother or a friendly uncle.

Those that knew him have testified that teaching Tommy to reign in his opinion would be like instructing a chicken to drive a car, nigh on impossible. He told the truth as he knew it and not for public approval. In the end, it is part of the reason why he is so greatly venerated. Yes he had run-ins, stood up for himself, made mistakes and kept trying, he is living proof that you can be honourable and ferociously competitive at the same time. Countless opponents have relayed tales of Tommy praising them for good play on the pitch against them, the anecdote that stands out is Derek Ferguson, who has stated he was speechless when the great man talked him through his debut for Rangers v Celtic, while crunching into tackles against him in between times.

It’s this mindset that makes Brendan Rodgers reaction to defeat at Tynecastle so pleasing. Let’s face it, there is no love lost between Hearts and Celtic but the reality is that Hearts were very, very good and that deserved to be acknowledged.

As Celtic fans we are not exactly indifferent as to how others perceive us. Our collective identity, and you might say ego, means we enjoy the recognition of best fan awards and retweet and share the hundreds of commendations that have come our way from the superstars who have graced the hallowed turf in the East End. Consider also, how this unprecedented period of dominance achieved by fair means has not alienated fans of most other clubs. The truth is humility and hard work is admired, even by our rivals.

And have we had a more humble Celtic man than Tommy Burns? I commented on CQN a few weeks ago that he is behind only Brother Walfrid and Jock Stein in the pantheon of great Celts. It is a subjective opinion of course but if we truly believe that Celtic is more than a club and that Lisbon, the centenary season, defeating Barcelona on our 125th anniversary and the 69 game unbeaten run represents only a small fragment of what the club is for about, then it’s hard to make a case against.

As fans we yearn for our club to be on the world stage. Open to all who wish to experience the atmosphere of a CL evening under the lights. And yet conversely, as modern individuals we often want to shore up the walls around us, let few in and retreat to safe spaces. I know myself, that I miss dozens of opportunities to connect with others on a daily basis and God knows why, as time is short. An old Social Work manager of mine once told me that when talking to your fellows, it is the sun that takes the coat off not the wind. Consider the example of Tommy Burns in that context, he had a word for absolutely everyone, spoke highly of the club at all times and was not too sensitive to moving down in rank, as he did when he became head of youth development having previously been manager.

You wonder what he would say about a lot of things. The unbeaten run, the recent fate of our old rivals across the city. No matter his opinion it would be respected and it would be true as he saw it. He formed strong friendships with men who many of us believe wilfully cheated him, and Celtic. It is incredible the strength of character he possessed and his legacy is beyond words.

His role in this unbeaten run is of course indirect, and it is in the example he passed on to Brendan Rodgers. His role in Gordon Strachans three in a row accomplishments are well known, his achievements in persuading the board to deliver on Lennoxtown youth academy and the impact he had on players such as O’Dea, McGeady and McManus are heart warming. He was a magnificent Celtic manager and an outstanding and successful Celtic player.

Isn’t it incredible that despite all of this, he is remembered for better things.

For the voluntary acceptance and transcendence of his suffering, for his great faith, for his humour and compassion. He showed millions of Celtic fans how to cultivate good, life affirming habits and show the club in the best light. The day after the Hearts game I read it would have been his 61st birthday and it got me thinking about him, how proud he would have been of Rodgers and to be a Celtic fan during this run.

He is a reminder that Celtic is about far more than winning. I would echo the thoughts of all of those who have suggested that Lennoxtown be named after him, it would be a fitting tribute to a true Celtic legend.

I just hope to see Celtic win games, cups, leagues, and occasional European trophy. They have let me down many a time, especially in cup games. But win, lose or draw, I have Celtic in my heart, as do all of my family – sons, nephews, nieces, grandchildren.

The board will continue to operate as a board should. Ensure the club is financed and run according to the rules. Forget the other club or clubs which are cheating. We look after ourself.

Delighted to offer a really positive update from Stephen today.

His review with consultant has confirmed that surgery is not required and less invasive treatment can be utilised.

It goes without saying he is both relieved at the good news and humbled and thankful for all the messages of support from this site.

It’s still going to be a tough challenge, but the outlook is much more positive now.

MAH will no doubt update when he can.

Meantime, we can celebrate a small, yet significant, victory for our buddy and continue to believe in the power of prayer and loving support & goodwill.

Rangers announced Murty as Manager until end of season AND he will have a transfer kitty.

He is only Rangers manager to take points off Celtic (note points plural although it was one draw) and has beaten Aberdeen twice and Hearts at Murryafield

Not a mention of TOP at all and so very very positive for any TRFC supporter wanting to hear what they want him to hear. A bit like finding what you want to find.

Scottish football is living in a media created illusion and only results on the park will speak for reality.

P, do not think we have had the pleasure. Thank you for the update on Stephen. After reading your post I sent him a text. Two minutes later, my ring tone, Fairytale in New York rang out, looked at the phone and it was a MAH!

He sounded really good, relieved from what he was told last week until today. He is so so positive and up for the fight. It was great to speak with him. One of my first real friends I found on CQN. He’ll be on later but he said he has appreciated the messages sent to him by text from what he coined the old grey brigade and by the messages posted here. He was letting his Sisters read them, they could not believe the support.

Happy Christmas Stephen. You’ll win your fight my friend.

    Until we meet again…

  19. You know I’m sitting here thinking Charlie Nicholas style and it just dawned on me.

You know back in the Craig Whyte days I betcha the SFA SPL SPLF SPFL PFJ JPF Celtic rangers were awe in cahoots on some kind of business continuity plan based on bigotry and blind faith.

I think we should table an emotion at the next AGM.

    See what number we get.

  20. Thanks to Saltires EN Sevilla for giving the blog an update on my condition this is the 1st time i have been able to post Just in the door & I hear ole randy is randless but we all knew that anyway :)

First of all many thanks to everyone for there comments etc I can assure you they were most welcome & my family were staggered when I showed them today at the hospital & thanks to those who text & phoned me as well that meant a lot

My scans from the Beaston were clear & the cancer had not spread anywhere else which was brilliant news & the consultant was then in a position to offer me 2 choices surgery or chemo & radiotherapy . He personally advised the chemo which is what I have went for

It’s still a close call he says 50/50 but I have more than a fighting chance which is more than I had a week ago.

So once again thanks everyone on the ole CQN blog it does really lift your spirits when your down & feeling low

    Thanks

It is, of course, acceptable to use the word `Rangers` in a variety of situations. It is, however, inaccurate to use it to refer to the current Ibrox side. Where does Paul do this?
