Spectre of Celtic and wincing at financial realities

1141

I winced slightly reading that Deliotte’s suggested Celtic were a ‘top 40’ club in terms of turnover.  The days we featured in their annual Top 20 report are long gone, lost in the raft of TV deals which flooded into England, France and elsewhere.

This is a problem for Celtic but at least we have a decent shot at Champions League income each year.  Others in Scottish football have been left to wither on the vine (phrase of the week), as the likes of AFC Bournemouth cherry-pick their talent.

Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.  Dundee United have the ability to produce remarkable talent, if only they had the TV deal to allow them to retain it long enough to build a team.  The same could be said for Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Ross County.

Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.

You would think after administration and liquidation those who look to Ibrox for their football fix would, to adopt a popular phrase around those parts, have suffered enough from financial ‘ambition’.  Not a bit of it, it seems.  Not when the spectre of “being battered” by Celtic looms like an enormous green and white tidal wave.

For the last 12 years of its existence, Dave King was one of the non-executive directors of Rangers, paid to ensure that financial controls and risk management [role of non-execs defined by government 2003 Higgs Report]were in place.  I am not being glib or shameless when I say he did a remarkable job.

With Newco appearing to be in some financial distress, King told the Daily Mail he opposes planned cutbacks: ‘If we cut the club back to a level that’s just enough to win the League One or the Championship then that’s fine. But the gap between ourselves and Celtic when we get to the Premiership will be obvious.

“But I don’t feel the club should respond by cutting the costs to the point of saying ‘we only have to do what is necessary to beat East Fife or whoever.

“Because if you do that Celtic will build up to 10-in-a-row and we could be so far behind them that even when we are back in the Premiership we are  not in a position to catch up.

“We cannot risk going to Celtic Park and being battered 6-0.”

Those trying to keep Newco Rangers afloat will not welcome suggestions that current shareholders don’t have the “appetite or willingness to invest”, a few months before they will ask fans to buy season tickets.

Learn your lesson, there is no shame in losing 6-0 to Celtic, this is sport, bad results can happen, but there is enormous shame in failing to live within your means.

I’m off to contemplate 10-in-a-row for a while. To hyphenate or not?

Interesting thoughts. One of those teams would have no history? Which one would it be? You can’t split a football club can you? Both have the same history?

  4. the long wait is over on

Rangers V1 went under because they refused to live within their means in trying to emulate our winning of the European Cup and , to a lesser extent, nine in a row.

Looks like Rangers V2 are prepared to take the same approach in an attempt to prevent us winning 10 in a row. I suspect they are more obsessed with that than we are.

It looks like its going to be very cold in his shadow for a few years yet.

  8. Interesting comment on the RIFC Shares Discussion Board, following the 2m+ shares sold today.

“It remains to be seen who the parties are. You mat be right about panic. The Board must achieve substancial cuts to both player numbers and wages by next friday. The players have already told the Board where to go on a 15% pay deduction. Its hard to see any players giving up their contracts at the new club anytime soon. Things will get more nervy for this share as 31/01/14 appraoches. After that all bets are off. “

  9. BTRH is thought -provoking as usual. We all have our ideas on what makes a saint, G K Chesterton rightly pointed out that saints tend to be hard bassas, or nothing would get done. Read his book on Francis of Assisi “God’s Clown”.

Interesting also that Michael Collins is mentioned. Remember that agreement he signed? He knew he was signing his own death warrant. If we look at present times we see the Real IRA, Continuity IRA etc all claiming ownership of the Republican ideal, The blunt truth is that a deal was negotiated . Not all terms were satisfactory–but then they never are. A lot of the Irish Civil War was down to personalities and power-seeking, much as today’s polititicians behave. When Collins was shot at Beal Na Blath Ireland lost the only man with a vision for what the future of the country was to be. The rest squabbled for power, and we were left with the Long Fellow.

What Dev left and the rest picked up was the Eire equivilant of Tammany Hall i.e. the same people in power with their families, money concentrated among an elite, the Rule of Law subverted (look at the banks and developers and ask how many are in jail) the cops subservient–you know the rest.

    Which takes us to Celtic.

1.– Why do the powers that be not like the club or supporters? Answer–too honest.

2,–Why do the refs and linesmen hate Celtic?Answer–Too honest.

3.–Why does the MSM do Celtic down at every opportunity?Answer–Too honest.

4,–Why has the OO and the Masons a hatred od of club and support? Answer–Too honest.

I could go on, but you get the drift. If the Celtic board had more of the qualities of the Celtic support, it would be almost the perfect football club.

  10. Celtic are too big for our league and, unfortunately, one of the teams who make up the numbers in the CL. Every player we sign who has a good run in the team becomes a target for the EPL and there is nothing we can do to change this.

  11. Lot of talk of THEM running scared of never catching up with Celtic.

Why should THEY be when Celtic will resolutely pursue a policy of just doing enough to keep ahead? A policy that will inevitably come back to bite us on the bum.

  13. Good luck to young Atajic on loan. Hope he does as well or better than our current loanees, McGregor & Atajic, both of whom must be giving the manager a nice problem as to how to use them in future.

Liam Miller was the last loaned out player to then move back to Celtic as a success, but there are two player in our current starting 11 whose Celtic career benefited from early use of the loan system.

    Can you name them?

  14. As we have won the league we should be persevering with the options we have on our books. Trying different combinations over a couple of games. I’d play two full game with Pukki and Balde and see how that goes, then another , then another.

  15. News now filtering out of a big scam in the six counties. Over 11,000, mostly RUC, have filed claims for hearing loss. Prison officers and UDR now lining up for similar claims.

To date £135 million has been paid out. Of this over £65 million of this has been paid mainly to two law firms.

This happens at a time when there is a “public outcry” about the vast amount of money being paid in legal aid. The top firm topped £2 million last year (15 solicitors in the firm) but then the people they represent didn’t wear the Queen’s uniform. In many cases they suffered loss of family from the actions of the uniforms.

Another development is that Matt Baggott is resigning as head of PSNI and Sir Stephen House of Police Scotland is favourite for the post. No better man to handle flag and parade issues. If he transfers will the gagging order still be in force?

  16. Wee Jimmy Johnstone, Jock Stein, Brother Walfrid, names that make the heart swell.

What do they all have most in common today?

If it was not for An Gorta Mor none of us would be posting here today. Celtic would never have won the European Cup.

Yeah it was a bit downbeat, I’m not saying we should all give up. I just think that the situation is bad for clubs like Celtic.

  24. Paul 67, Bhoys and Ghirls,

In terms of turnover we are a top 40 club. In terms of branded clubs we are even higher.

Considering all that has happened in Scottish football this is remarkable. As BigChipsUK commented ( possibly a tongue in cheek post ) if we had access to the EPL we would be a top 10 club in every way.

The EPL has 643 million viewers in a global market and growing, smaller clubs e.g. Fulham without CL money and exposure are overtaking us.

To retain this position while playing in Scotland we must be in the CL every year.

The EPL is a global stage, with an abundance of foreign players and foreign owners, the only English aspect is geography, and even that is diluted with playing in Wales.

Barriers are coming down and the world is a smaller place. In footballing terms isolation can not be an option. I trust and hope that our board are planning behind the scenes.

IMO, Market Forces will eventually prevail. I know we have been rebuffed before, but aptly at this time of year I would ask the board to emulate Robert the Bruce while watching the spider in the cave.

Again IMO a European league is filled with even more obstacles e.g. Real Madrid and Barcelona will never agree to give up their privileged deal of self negotiation for broadcasting rights.

Falling foul of UEFA with needless stunts will not enhance our brand and aspirations, no matter what avenue we pursue.

The status quo waiting for a dysfunctional team for perceived competition cannot be a viable option.
