£2m AUSSIE STAR ON BRINK

CELTIC are on the brink of signing £2million-rated Australian playmaker Riley McGree who has just completed a loan period at Birmingham City.

The 23-year-old midfielder had been in impressive form for the Midlands side since arriving on a temporary transfer from MLS outfit Charlotte FC last season. He made 30 appearances and scored three goals for the St Andrews club before the completion of his contract 10 days ago.

That has alerted Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou who is well aware of McGree’s qualities at international level, according to a report on Mail Online.

The Championship side, who slumped out of the FA Cup yesterday after a 1-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle, were expected to make the move permanent while other second-tier teams – with Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest among them – monitoring the situation.

Postecoglou, a former Australian manager, of course, is an admirer and believes the gifted performer could flourish in Scottish football alongside his compatriot Tom Rogic and become part of his squad.

The exciting talent was first linked with Celtic almost FIVE years ago, as CQN reported.

The Hoops have already brought in four recruits in this month’s transfer window – Japanese trio Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate and Irish teenage striker Johnny Kenny – and could add a fifth within the next few days.
