£2m MATTHEWS FOR SUNDERLAND

CELTIC defender Adam Matthews will join Sunderland in a £2million deal within the next 48 hours.

The right-back should complete the move after holding talks with the Wearside club this week.

Queens Park Rangers were also interested, but Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat continued to target the Welsh international after an earlier bid was rejected.

Matthews, 23, has a year left on his current deal at Parkhead and given the new arrival of Saidy Janko this week, it became clear that either the Welshman or Mikael Lustig would move on to accommodate the former Manchester United player.

Since his 2011 Bosman move from Cardiff City, Matthew has played 148 times for the Hoops and established himself as favourite among the supporters.

He won everything in the Scottish game and was also a solid performer in the Champions League.

Matthews made 42 appearances last season and is one of the few players remaining at Parkhead who were part of the team which beat Barcelona 2-1 in Europe’s top flight.

Swedish international Lustig is now nearing match fitness after missing a chunk of last season through injury.

Ronny Deila also has youngster Darnell Fisher vying for a place in the right-back berth.
Since the news broke last night – and we had this on the CQN Magazine Facebook page – the sentiments towards Adam from the Celtic support have been very warm indeed. Everyone at Celtic will want to wish him all the very best for his time in the English Premier League.
