Rogic easing into contention

86

Delighted Brendan Rodgers gave Tom Rogic such high praise at his pre-match media conference ahead of the longest surviving Glasgow derby. He’s is a player who put enormous effort into personal development and was rewarded with outstanding form before his injury in December.

A word of caution, though. It took Tom several months before his fitness was deemed appropriate to last a full 90 minutes by Brendan Rodgers, so no matter how long we see Tom tonight, this will be no more than a staging post in his recovery. Don’t expect him to be anywhere near his best.

There is little reason to deny Emilio Izaguirre and Cristian Gamboa a run out tonight. Mikael Lustig and Kieran Tierney have both had a busy few weeks, so should be rested with important games ahead later this month.

Brendan doesn’t have many options in advanced positions. Without Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths he will probably deploy the same attacking formation as the one which deconstructed Hearts on Sunday.

If they do their job half as well as they did at Tynecastle, you and I could play in central defence and we’d still win.

  2. Regarding The Rangers Football Club plc, no one, not even Glibby, disputes that its status is ‘liquidation’, so, given that the football club was incorporated in 1899, what else could it be but in liquidation along with the company?

Why else would Glib & Shameless have ambitions to take the club out of liquidation?

And, believing this to be something to aspire to, just what club does he think he took over?

Belated best wishes for a long and happy marriage and for the help you gave me when I was travelling in India and trying to find somewhere to watch the last game against them. This extract from emails home explains what happened:

In Cochin, we stay in Carlton and Patricia’s lovely homestay. I had thoughts of trying to find a screen somewhere that was showing Celtic confronting the Forces of Darkness from the other side of Glasgow but this is scotched (geddit?) when we discover that a house-to-house Stations of the Cross is to take place that evening ending with the 14th and 15th at Carlton and Patricia’s. I get my priorities right.

  5. From twitter.

Dado Prso received just under £2m through the EBT scheme.

Yet we are told it did not affect his decision to play for Rangers? Laughable.

  6. One of the advantages for those of us who do not live on the door-step of Paradise is that our Game Day starts sooner ( except for Old Tim`s Gang ). Mine is just about to start now as I head over to ACGRburg .

  8. Brendan’s next team sheet will be interesting.

Will he rest key players as previously suggested, or will he turn the screw and keep things purring over with the first team?

I hope that everyone will be patient if we do see a raft of changes. Chances are the fluidity we saw at the diets will not be as effective, as the familiarity won’t be up to speed.

  9. My own better half’s family in San Francisco have over the years been puzzled by her various nicknames over the years, such as Fenian, Tim, Timette etc.

  10. I doubt the boss will change much for tonight, it’s going to be a tough run in no matter who starts I think, a lot of pressure on the players to do what we are hoping for, Commons? Think I’ll just leave that one alone for now.

A man has been fined £650 for shouting an offensive remark towards a Remembrance Day parade.

Luke Canning yelled “Tiocfaidh ár lá”, an Irish slogan meaning “our day will come”, at a parade on Remembrance Sunday in Glasgow’s east end, last year.

The boozed-up 23-year-old then struggled with officers when they arrested him for his crime.

Canning, from Baillieston, Glasgow, pled guilty yesterday at the city’s sheriff court, to breaching the peace on November 13 at Abercromby Street.

“I wasn’t even close to doing that,” said Deila. “I WAS the boss at Celtic. That is when you do have to make decisions. I wasn’t afraid of making decisions. That is the only way I feel you can improve as a coach and a person as well. You need to make mistakes. You need to make decisions, you have to take risks. And I have always done that in my career. If you are in a comfort zone you always go to the next level. At Celtic I found that unbelievably hard, but also very interesting.

“But Norwegian footballers are more … well for one, they are not millionaires,” he added. “That means they don’t get all that attention they get in Scotland. There are less foreign players as well, so it is maybe a more united group. If you had only Scottish players in your team then I think you would get the same thing. Also the culture in Norwegian society is more liberal. It is more open. Here, everybody will come into my office and talk to me. Here you play 38 games, if you are lucky enough to get to the cup final. There it was 60 a year. It is a very tough life. Being here is a holiday compared to Celtic.”

  23. This is a quote from Brendan in the et Rag today about Tom Rogic….” The MAGIC MAN” !

Rogic, 24, was playing the best football of his career before awkwardly catching his ankle in a match with Dundee.

Read more: Kieran Tierney is Celtic’s ordinary superstar who will never forget his roots

Despite Celtic’s continued cruise to their sixth title in a row, which was achieved at Tynecastle on Sunday, he has been a miss and Rodgers is delighted one of his favourites is available again.

“The magic man is back – what a player. What an amazing player,” said the Celtic manager. “I think he can grow into one of the top midfielders in Europe.

“You saw him grow in the Champions League. You saw him against Manchester City and just purred at his quality. There was a big disappointment when he got injured because the week building up to it he was amazing.

“Top players know where there space is and he’s as good as any I’ve seen at finding space. What he needed to do was gain intensity and strength, and gain more end product and he did all of that up until he got injured. He’s a great boost for us in this last ten games.
