4 is the magic number

123

A point on Saturday would deliver the 120th major honour in Celtic’s history.  That figure was 99 as recently as November 2016.  This important number we are now chasing, though, is 121, which a Scottish Cup win would deliver, and of course, a ninth treble.

During our nine-in-a-row eras it was the number of consecutive titles that occupied our minds (and the T-shirts and flags for our second nine’).  In that tradition, Saturday’s magic number is 4.  There were “55” flags on sale outside Hampden on Sunday.  Why?

Celtic are about to win four-in-a-row for the fifth time.  Rangers managed the feat on three occasions.  Aberdeen (1985), Hibs (1952) and Dumbarton (1892) are the only others sides to retain the league title, each doing so on one occasion (Dumbarton on the League’s first two seasons).  These are precious days.

Yes, we’ve acquired an addiction to trophies since 2016.

I can’t for the life of me think of what happened in that year…

Blame it on the boogie ?

  2. stop counting them as if they are won already . that is how complacency creeps in.

    focus focus focus

and a btw. what a waste of midweek evenings for football fixtures

Those figures really highlight just how successful a period we are going through. Amazing.

As we are all so well aware the “going for 55” narrative was simply to kid everyone on that Sevco and Rangers were the same.

I really hope we, as a club, do not buy into the 55 garbage.

Fans Q&A with Brendan last night, priority signing is a fast direct winger who scores goals, he will be very disappointed if Taylor goes,he sees room for him and KT,better communications now with Collum re VAR etc

    Brendan Rodgers at fan briefing

When asked what it will take to go one step further in the Champions League.

    * He said belief.

    * We need to know that we can compete at that level.

    * There will be times when we are up against much better players for sure, but we need to believe in what we do.

When asked if the board have the same ambitions as the fans.

    • He said the Board have the same ambitions as him, that’s why he’s back.

When asked about the dip in intensity.

    * He made the point that a few of the players like Engels, Trusty etc have went from playing some football at clubs, to the pressure week in and week out at Celtic.

    * It will take them time to adjust to that.

    * He says we have played more games this season than normal season and that will make a difference

    * Especially after a Euros year.

    * He wants the Winter Break back, but has been told it won’t be next season.

    * He’s spoken with Trusty and he knows what he needs to do, he’s been great in big games but has made mistakes in run of the mill league games so it’s a mentality thing.

When asked about refs & VAR

    * He said that the VAR here isn’t good enough and he feels for the officials, they are expected to make calls without the technology.

    * It’s night and day thought compared to his last spell.

    * The only communication he had in his first spell in charge was who the ref was going to be at the weekend.

    * Willie Collum has opened the dialog between the SFA and the clubs.

    * It sounded to me like he gets a call from Willie every Monday

    • He says the club does challenge a lot of decisions, they just don’t always make it public.

  9. Interesting Brendan wants a fast winger who scores goals. I thought we were well covered in that department. Maeda, Jota, Kuhn and Yang as back up.

Does Brendan think we will lose one or more of them?

  10. 55 is important

but only in that it clearly surpasses the total number of titles held by Liquidated Rangers 1872 who, prior to Liquidation, achieved 43 outright titles and 1 shared title, so 43.5 (though this was rounded up to 44, but never by me).

Liquidated Rangers can never achieve 55 (to state the obvious), so I will celebrated 55 as being special (though I don’t need a flag).

Thereafter the next one I very much want to celebrate will be (of course) 67 !

The Covid Title held by Sevco / The rangers International / new club / newco is utterly irrelevant to any of my thinking or celebrations.

In Brendan we very much trust.

  11. oops looks like I took off EBT (etc) cheating titles from Liquidated Rangers !

    Well someone has to remember…….

Things you won’t read in the SMSM.

Kevin Thelwell was appointed Sporting Director at Wolves in 2016.

Wolves finished 15th in the Championship in the 2016-17 season. They spent £27.6m on transfers.

Wolves won the Championship in the 2017-18 season. They spent £21.5m on transfers.

They finished 7th in their first season in the Premiership. Total expenditure on incoming transfrers in the 2019-20 season was €116.7m.

Thelwell joined NY Red Bulls in Feb 2020. They finished 6th and 7th in the Eastern Conference during the 2020 and 2021 seasons respectively. According to Chat GPT he was “instrumental in roster development, bringing in talents like Patryk Kimala”.

In Feb 2022 he joined Everton who finished 16th, 17th and 15th in the following 3 seasons. They currently sit 13th in the Premireship with 8 wins, 11 draws and 11 loses. Between season 2021-22 and season 2024-25 Everton have spent £170m on transfers.

All of the above was found in 10 minutes on Chat GPT. No doubt this guy will be hyped by the SMSM, but I would argue his track record is far from stellar.

This narrative of The Celtic Board and manager being at odds, particularly on an ego basis comes from past memories and has no current proof.

I prefer a more current narrative based on three factors.

    The new CL format

The part Celtic played in the development of FSR that allows Celtic if they choose, to out wage R2ngers and shop in a higher player wage market than they can.

Related to that is the possibility that FSR will have a deflationary effect on player wages.

The type of player like Schluup whose wage contract was set before FSR brought in a now 70% ceiling.

There might be more younger Schlupp types dropping into a lower market who are value for the lower wage.

On that basis I think a different narrative not based on personalities is that DD persuaded BR to return to Celtic to raise their level in CL terms and that this is at least a 5 year project where BR has Board support at highest level to reach the higher level.

I think that a more plausible narrative.

    Nope

yourself B78 at various times have voiced, fretted worried, alleged Brendan is not running with our board

Celtic40me on yesterdays blog implied an imaginary divergence of paths with Brendan and the Celtic board.

Paul67 well at various times on twitter implying that policies are being ripped up on tfers.

    Yet we keep winning.

    Question to all 3.

Would you offer Brendan a new contract? I would.

Differing opinins are always welcome, but evidence them.

Success is welcome but is worked v.v hard for by all at Celtic Park

I would take Liam Neeson to play Brother Walfrid, and then in the first team talk he could say, “I have a particular set of skills”, or use his Cork accent from Michael Collins and say, ” I need yees tae focus”.

Gerry Butler is a good shout as well. Wee Messi could play wee Jinky and dye his hair orange, though it would be a poor substitute for the wee Mhan:)))

  23. THE BLOGGER FORMERLY KNOWN AS GM

I thought Thelwell is a good job at Everton in dire circumstances. Points deductions, PSR restrictions and having to lower the wage bill and age. The figures quoted aren’t net spend as Everton were in a surplus.

But then Everton are replacing him with Hammond who was far from loved at Celtic so who knows what to think 🤔
