40 years of B team failure

288

In the grand scheme of things, it might not seem to matter that Celtic’s B team have no reserve league to compete in next season.  It will not determine the outcome of the league title and will affect Premiership teams equally.  The impact of what happens in reserve football are, however, real and long lasting.

For decades, Celtic have dominated Scottish youth leagues, yet the ability to transform players who shine in their age group into first team regulars is woeful.  James Forrest, Callum McGregor and the superstar from Wishaw are all we are inclined to talk about since Paul McStay bookended the golden two decades 40 years ago.  Compare that to the relative success of Hibs, Aberdeen, United, Motherwell, even Hamilton Accies!

Reasons for failures are usually complex and simplistic explanations by outsiders should come with a Dunning-Kruger health warning, but I know multiple iterations of Celtic coaches have bemoaned the lack of competition our development squads face.

A young David Turnbull at Motherwell would have taken midfield responsibility as his side battled teams of equal or greater ability.  The same player at Celtic would play in a team that dominated possession every week and always faced weaker opponents.  No one improves their sharpness, industry or skill continually facing weaker opposition.

The consequence of all this is that we can expect our finest talent to wither on the vine more often than grab a pitch-side megaphone unless and until they face better players week-in, week-out.

The perennial ‘Colts team’ proposition now sits with the Scottish Lowland League, which I do not expect is of a great standard, although many of their pitches are better than their SFL counterparts.  It is better than nothing and possibly better that a Premiership Reserve league, however, if we want to reverse a 40 year trend, we will need to be far more creative.

I once read a review of M & BW appearing at the Glasgow Empire which was before even our time but well known as a legendary graveyard of London ‘comics’

The story goes MW was dying the proverbial death with his crap London EastEnd humour. As you describe oot walks the supposed funny man going “EEEEEEEE…”.

Member of the audience shouts out “Aw naw, there’s two o thum……”.

Hence my reference to them regarding our resident Project Fear double act.

Class consciousness has declined, as heavy industry has declined, and has been replaced by identity politics.

And foremost among the identities around which people coalesce is nationality, hence the growth in nationalism.

And the funny thing about nationalism is that everyone imagines their own is benign and progressive.

You’re correct nationalism will always be around, its just that I prefer the Scandanavian version of social and civic nationalism which an Independent Scotland would have rather than an Imperialist British Nationalism that the Tory party, the Orange Order and other right wing groups glorify and support. Incidentally I’m not a avid supporter of the SNP but at this time they and the Greens are the only parties that would bring about Independence and let Scotland get back to normal politics where I think the Scottish Labour Party would once again have a big influence.

Lets hope this Celtic Board start communicating with the Celtic support and make decisions so that we can start having positive discussions about the football again.

Agree with what you say – a sensible post about Brexit in an otherwise sea of tripe. Like you, I voted remain, but as a democrat I accept the result and have moved on.

I always ask those who still appear ‘Brexit mad’, three questions:

    1) What were you voting for when you voted against Brexit?

    2) What difference has Brexit made to your life to date?

    3) What difference do you think Brexit will make to your life in the future?

It is impossible to get a coherent answer – the vast majority just hate the people who advocated and fought for Brexit – “f****** Boris Johnson” is the usual reply to all three questions.

The quick answer to question 2 could of course be ” We have been vaccinated and protected against Covid much quicker than any other country in the EU”

More people voted Leave in Scotland(1.4m) than have ever vote for the SNPcult in any election, Holyrood, or, Westminster

  25. I’ve oft said on here that Celtic are doing nothing. I realise that’s not quite accurate.

Football clubs, by definition, do not operate in isolation. Like any sport, relative position to ones main opposition is important.

As Aberdeen and sevco are continuing to strengthen, so we continue to regress, relative to that.

Every day makes us weaker. Every day makes next season more of a challenge.

What is our model for next year? DoF? If so, do we intend to appoint before the manager? Would seem appropriate to do so.

    I just don’t know.

In this instance, silence is not a sign of strength

Confirms to me what I have posted before about the negative reaction of certain players in the squad to SD”s announcement on the 11 October, designed to placate angry Brighton fans, that “Celtic is paying ALL my Brighton wages”.
