40 years since an iconic striker youth graduate

541

Notwithstanding we had four strikers isolating and that under most circumstances, four strikers would be sufficient, the games against Hibs and Livingston highlighted a long-term problem.  Celtic have been able to produce wingers, defenders and midfielders who have become first choice starters in the first team, but we are unable to produce a striker.

In the last 20 years, Craig Beattie is arguably our most successful striker-graduate from the youth system (gulp), and he moved on having scored 13 goals for the club, the kind of return Leigh Griffiths may have hoped for in a month, a few years back.

Gerry Creaney made his debut 31 years ago and spent a couple of seasons as a regular starter, before eventually playing Premier League football for Manchester City (it was a different world back then, kids), but Gerry was nowhere near a top performer at the club.

It is now over 40 years since the last iconic striker, Charlie Nicholas, came through the youth system to electrify Celtic Park for three seasons.  He returned for a five-year spell later, when he largely stood on the same spot every 90 minutes, before working out some deep therapeutic issues as a media pundit in later years.

40 years and we were unable to produce a striker with the talent of Leigh Griffiths, despite many changes in coaches, systems and first team budgets?  This sounds unlikely.  I suspect the opportunities afforded to the young Leigh at Livingston were denied to hundreds of Celtic youth strikers.

Desmond may hand the reins over to his son as some reports have suggested . Much may depend on whether the son is simply carrying out his father’s bidding or whether a new structure accompanies the new regime .

All conjecture at this point .

So the entire destiny of Celtic is at the whim of a foreign domiciled tax exile whose favourite club is a nine iron.

    Not exactly ideal, is it?

    I agree 100%.

I’m sure BR left because the club no longer matched his ambitions…mainly due to PL’s influence/deciding on which players are signed (eg Shved) or not signed (eg McGinn).

Let’s see what today brings. Each week we are having a football club nightmare and some weeks it is days and days of bad publicity and the majority of it is of our own doing.

Apparently “Change is a coming” probably next season.

Anyone and their Granny could have predicted the fall from grace on the park in October when the board backed Neil. Every one of his footballing decisions over the last year have been baffling.

I would not be surprised if the board came out and backed Neil now saying they stand by him in the face of adversity. If so then next year we will probably win nothing as his baffling footballing decisions will not change.

I mean properly managed on and off the park we should have been winning the League for about 20 years. This season we will win zilch because I do not think even the Scottish cup is within our capabilities.

I could go on about some of Neil’s rant yesterday but to be honest its embarrassing.

I want what is best for Celtic Football Club and unfortunately Neil has to go.

It is insulting our intelligence to say we should stick by him because of a 1 time rant about something like covid restrictions, by all means rant about cheating Neil but not something that you will not win.

Pretty accurate summary for me sums up my thoughts. As we have seen for years this board has no plan, everything is done too late if at all, closing the barn door as the horse disappears over the horizon. If we were a properly run club we would not be playing the CL qualifiers every season with a makeshift squad and don’t get me started on why it takes so long to get players “match fit”.

We are an absolute shambles and no amount of squirrels changes that. I wonder what moonbeams we will be hearing about at renewal time.

By the way my main particular issue with the club at the moment is that over the last 4 or 5 years we have not solved any of the squad issues, no central defenders, no full backs and no wingers.

Shambles, we deserve the painful close season we are about to suffer.

  8. Spikey – Thanks yes i’ve seen it but always worth another read/look.

  10. Tune in to BBC radio Scotland for phone-in with Kay -subject Neil Lennon and Celtic.

    Just starting. 9am

  11. NFL… For the first time since he came back has really let rip……. Looking at his body language and the words he used I’d say he was being very truthful…… Any celtic supporter who thinks this government somehow are even handed are just being delusional and they really have done a number on them…… This 4 metre rule???…. Rugby scrums.. I’m looking forward to watching 6 nations…… As for the accusation that the trip was giving the go ahead on the morning of the hun game is really incredible…. Goverments officials MUST have known restrictions would be tightened…… Its really quite shocking, and no wonder lennon lost it!!!!…. Just as well it wasn’t me!!!

Lenny did not go on a rant about Covid restrictions.

He had a go at the different expectations required of Celtic compared to others.

    Nothing embarrassing about that

  15. Clinko – I just think its a waste of time if we have evidence and are not going to provide it. We know the press or most former players do not like us. Nothing new there.

I understand his frustrations but it boils down to 1 thing/decision. Going to Dubai.

Who was responsible for such a catastrophic decision Neil.

Yes, he did go on a rant. He took swipes at Hamilton and St Johnstone. He made comment about bus travel, plane travel and Celtic being policed differently to anyone else. It was self-justifying and deflective nonsense.

He was not in control of his emotions.

He should not have been out in that position by the club and certainly not without full possession of the facts. Which made him look silly when he had to confirm another player produced a positive test.

If Celtic have proof, as they say they do, that the club is being treated differently by the Scottish Government, then let’s see it and – more importantly – let’s hear it from Lawwell or Bankier.

NL lost the plot yesterday in the full glare of Scottish public opinion and the real villains of the piece are those at Celtic who put a clearly overly emotional individual in that position.

Last night Neil Lennon deserved a ‘duty of care’; this morning ‘ the real villains of the piece are those at Celtic who put a clearly overly emotional individual in that position’.

  20. Radio Scotland phone in… Bit of a damp squib….. Texted… but it wasn’t read out… I wanted to ask why was the trip given the green light and once given the green light why did the guidelines change…. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the future regarding restrictions…

He was pointing out the inconsistencies in the rules and in their interpretation and application when it comes to Celtic.

He wasn’t criticising Hamilton or St Johnstone.

  22. If you are going to have a go at the area available in a changing room for players and staff to use there must be rules as to what size this has to be, to allow a number of players to use it, within the rules and to allow football to go ahead, It cannot be less for some clubs and not others, surely?

  23. And who within football has checked these out up and down the country, shops have had to do it to allow a certain amount of people in, gym classes were restricted for group exercise which I was told was due to airflow among participants, typically a cycle fit class of 20 was cut to 10 in North Lanarkshire Leisure gyms.

Has football gone ahead and not checked out the changing rooms or does it not matter as they are in a sport bubble?

  24. Lenny did not have a go at any other club.

He asked why we could only have 3 players on a 56 seater bus but it was ok to have the full team in a small dressing room.
