40 years since an iconic striker youth graduate

541

Notwithstanding we had four strikers isolating and that under most circumstances, four strikers would be sufficient, the games against Hibs and Livingston highlighted a long-term problem.  Celtic have been able to produce wingers, defenders and midfielders who have become first choice starters in the first team, but we are unable to produce a striker.

In the last 20 years, Craig Beattie is arguably our most successful striker-graduate from the youth system (gulp), and he moved on having scored 13 goals for the club, the kind of return Leigh Griffiths may have hoped for in a month, a few years back.

Gerry Creaney made his debut 31 years ago and spent a couple of seasons as a regular starter, before eventually playing Premier League football for Manchester City (it was a different world back then, kids), but Gerry was nowhere near a top performer at the club.

It is now over 40 years since the last iconic striker, Charlie Nicholas, came through the youth system to electrify Celtic Park for three seasons.  He returned for a five-year spell later, when he largely stood on the same spot every 90 minutes, before working out some deep therapeutic issues as a media pundit in later years.

40 years and we were unable to produce a striker with the talent of Leigh Griffiths, despite many changes in coaches, systems and first team budgets?  This sounds unlikely.  I suspect the opportunities afforded to the young Leigh at Livingston were denied to hundreds of Celtic youth strikers.

  1. I KNOW that the Dubai Trip was stupid but…

I would LOVE Neil Lennon to call out the Scot Gov. especially when Celtic could do no more than punish Bolingoli the way that they did with Nicola sturgeon getting involved etc…and yet soon after NINE Hun players were allowed to play in a game without knowing the Test results…and HER Govt. CONGRATULATED the Huns after Arfields party, and how the Huns had ” Dealt” with ONY Two Offenders at the time….I NEVER heard or read about the Scot Gov investigating ” How MANY” Hun players were actually at that party…surely Arfield was at his OWN Birthday Party ?

I would LOVE Celtic/Neil Lennon to have the NAMES of ALL the Hun staff that were at that Party…real evidence…. and then question the Scot Govs lack of Investigation etc…or did the Scot Gov cover it up ?

Its been protrayed in the Media and by the Scot Gov….and ON HERE earlier that it was Beers ALL ROUND by the Poolside in Dubai….Neil Lennon has said Today that, 70/80 % of the Squad are Teatotal…so the ACCUSATION that EVERY Celtic player was consumi9ng alcohol is 100% WRONG !

I believe Neil Lennon on this issue…not the media or Scot Gov.

I agree we should be challenging the historic, antagonistic attitudes towards us .

It is very important , almost 10% as important as sorting out our football issues .

  3. Bournesouprecipe. Many years ago Arsenal were playing on a Sunday when I was in London. So I went along to see Nicholas play. In fact, he never got a game. To make matters worse I got my pocket pick on the way out and lost my wallet and all its contents. I also had my pals wallet for safety. There we were in London with only a few pounds between us. Fortunately I knew a lad in a bank who gave us a loan of a hundred pound to help us out. So you see I am not always rejoicing when I see wee Charlie spouting nonsense on the TV.

On the Huns’ birthday party. Do we have evidence / facts of other attendees, or is it just conjecture?

Not that I don’t believe it – I’m just wondering if there is evidence that can be utilised – or is it all “he said” / “she said” sort of stuff?

  5. Rumor that the club feels they were screwed over by the government regarding Dubai.

A final check regarding suitability to travel to dubai was made by club officials in a meeting with the government on morning of Rangers game and we were told it was OK to go. When Julian’s test came back positive we contacted the government and provided seating plans for plane, bus, eating areas etc. We also provided video footage to confirm all these arrangements were followed. Apparently based on this we expected 3 folk to be required to isolate due to their close contact with julien – mostly.medical staff. However the government.came back to us the following day and said, because it was an overseas trip they were broadening the area to 4m instead of the 2m that applies to all other flights. This meant the entire front section.of the plane had to isolate which was 16 players and staff members who had been sitting on their own in each row on either side of the aisle. Celtic complained that the rules had been changed and that they were being more harshly treated than other organisations but the suggestion came back that the government would just stop the game up here if they pushed it.

  6. If true, why does Lawwell not tell it as it is? A coward with no balls…..or he might be blackballed?

  7. How in the name of god can any Celtic fan stick up for the media . These people hate us with a passion . BBC full of ebt huns ,who hunted a pundit for not following the party line . Nickolas, Walker . Commons , Duffy , proven . the list is endless , and that’s only the tip of the iceberg of former celts . I think it was a bad decision to go we should have played a couple of games in hand , with covid being detected within the camp was nirvana for the rat pack , who were already on cloud nine at there favourites running away with the title , Neil Lennon will have to go , but he shouldnt be the only one ,higher up the tree should get a long overdue clear out as well . But it’s only Neil Lennon who is prepared to stand and face the enemy . Bombs . bullets . Batterings as far as I’m concerned it’s time for him to go . But there will be no venom for him coming from me .

As we know the virus can be caught easy enough here without going abroad , shops , supermarkets . birthday parties . HH

No wonder Neil Lennon was so angry, rules changed again, much confusion all round. The reality is that Football should not be happening at the height of this Pandemic and we should all be confined to the house eating government supplied rations with fear of torture if we venture out. That is how China dealt with it.

If that is true it needs put out on the Official Club Website, something stunk about who is making Track and Trace decisions within Health Boards, as we saw from the Armstrong case when Tierney was told to isolate didnt and played a game for his club, we had Christie sitting out, just because folk are in a position of responsibility doesnt eliminate bias and predjudice, the FM waving arms about saying she is no fan of football may be so, but Track and Trace is a system open to interpretation and therefore manipulation.

There was no criticism or follow up on Tierney from Holyrood.

No, we might well have had a case, but it’s unlikely there would have been an outbreak unless measures were overlooked and social distancing guidelines breached.

    —————————–

How do you explain what happened at Villa (without government reprimand) when they stayed at home and had a serious outbreak?

The following is from the Birmingham Live site:-

“Dean Smith credited the work of Aston Villa’s club doctor this week for helping keep him, his players and backroom staff safe during the club’s Covid-19 outbreak.

Villa’s first-team bubble had been isolating for a period of 10 days following 14 confirmed cases last week which forced the postponements of fixtures against Tottenham and Everton.

Speaking about Villa’s head of sport medicine and science Ricky Shamji, Smith said: “Our doctor Ricky Shamji has been outstanding in all of this. The be-all and end-all is our duty of care to our players, our staff but also the families they go home to as well.”

With Smith highlighting the work of his backroom medical staff, here we take a look at the head coach’s support team at Aston Villa – from CEO Christian Purslow to scouts and analysts in charge of recruiting Villa’s next signing.

Here’s a short profile surrounding the 23 people behind the scenes at Bodymoor Heath:”

They go on to list a team including CEO, Spoting Director, coaches and scouts, sports scientists, phsios, Head of Nutrition and a very overweight masseur.

  17. Bada,

All sounds plausible – I’d have hoped Peter would have confirmed much of that succinctly in that hastily conceived on-air mediocre mea-culpa…but he didn’t.

THAT information belongs in our hands……….. and heads.

It wouldn’t have changed my mind on the appropriateness of the trip but it would have softened my harsh view on the Club’s actions a wee bit.

IMO, Neil should always just stick to bland team updates and stuff like that……….

He tends to get drawn into conflabs with hacks that given his experiences in Scotland and the motivations of our hacks, they are best avoided…….. Peter could have taken on scoddish hypocrisy in a million other areas and didn’t. What would have had more credibility when we were in the ascendant – now doesn’t have the impact it might have.

Cheers Pal – I think we need to really pin people to the wall about a few things but – like Res 12 and so many other things – even with evidence, we seem all too happy to bend over and take it right up the hin’-end.

IF the above (about Dubai) is true, and IF NL is aware of the facts – then that means PL is too – and has saw fit to say fek-all about it. IF all of that is true – then even more disgraceful sending NL into a gunfight with nothing but blanks to fire back.

As GREENPINATA says – if they have emails, lets get them out and shame them.
