Lessons to learn for tonight

210

While I want a win, or a clean sheet, what I would really like to see is evidence of what we have learned since Anderlecht ran through us in Glasgow two months ago. We have a genuine chance to eliminate a stronger opponent and reach the last 16 of the Europa League, but merely hoping the same strategy that was so overwhelmingly ineffective at home to PSG, Bayern and Anderlecht, will work better this time, is not going to cut it.

Let’s keep it tight until late in the game, when Zenit’s energy levels will be stretched. I also think we get more out of Forrest, Sinclair and Dembele with space to exploit in the forward third. I know we are unpractised at this, but, all going well, we will face far stronger opponents in September, when a polished rear-guard action will definitely be needed.

Today’s lesson: how to defend against skillful opponents.

  4. We need to start putting recall options for loan players, Christie and Sviatchenko have been needed at various times this season, at the end of the day they are our players.I think most would have Erik at CB tonight, rather than Ajer or Hendry,IMO

    Shameless repost…

  5. BR said yesterday Zenit play 4-3-3 with a high press, my first thought was, don’t try passing out from the back, possibly the way we played v Hearts a few weeks ago, Kouassi in MF , Dembele and Edouard up front, and we got the ball forward quicker, might be worth a try tonight?

  6. What I want to know is, WHO are we playing in SEPTEMBER?

Not sure mate, how would we feel if City or Chelsea recalled Paddy or Charly? I think there needs to be a gentleman’s agreement with these things.

I’d go 4-4-2 with a solid, narrow midfield. Forrest up front as a second striker.

De Vries; Lustig, Simunovic, Ajer, Tierney; Brown; Kouassi, Ntcham; McGregor; Forrest, Dembele

True , but they own the players, as we do with Christie and Erik, needs must, unusual number of injuries, a recall option would make sense tae me…HH

  20. I think we will get a result tonight, but Paul67 is right to flag the defence.

I think the defence gets a lot of criticism because they are often left exposed by the midfield or, they try to be clever when an aggressive tackle or clearance is what is needed. European forwards like to fall over at slightest contact, but equally they avoid crunching defenders and back off 10 yards or so, or drift out to the wings where they are less effective.

My big worry is the managers defensive record in Europe is hopeless. He has been a great asset, improved players, galvanized the support etc., but his defensive record in Europe at Liverpool was poor, and he doesnt seem to learn.

Its easy when we play PSG etc to blame goals conceded on budgets, but that doesn’t wash with the results in Israel or Kazakhstan. Also, in France / Spain whilst PSG and Barca are winning their leagues, teams with lower budgets are conceding less than we are.

I am sure BR doesn’t need my advice, but here goes anyway – go out, be aggressive, play the ref ( what will he allow / not allow) see if they are up for it, capitalise on set pieces and look to take a 2:0 or a 3:1 into second game.
