Lessons to learn for tonight

210

While I want a win, or a clean sheet, what I would really like to see is evidence of what we have learned since Anderlecht ran through us in Glasgow two months ago. We have a genuine chance to eliminate a stronger opponent and reach the last 16 of the Europa League, but merely hoping the same strategy that was so overwhelmingly ineffective at home to PSG, Bayern and Anderlecht, will work better this time, is not going to cut it.

Let’s keep it tight until late in the game, when Zenit’s energy levels will be stretched. I also think we get more out of Forrest, Sinclair and Dembele with space to exploit in the forward third. I know we are unpractised at this, but, all going well, we will face far stronger opponents in September, when a polished rear-guard action will definitely be needed.

Today’s lesson: how to defend against skillful opponents.

  1. Lustig is out so it’s either Gamboa or three at the back. More likely the latter since we have played that a lot recently.

  3. If we play at a high tempo, like Hearts game at home, and the Bayern game, we will have a chance. If we play slow, pass the ball sideways and back we’ll lose. De Vries is my bigges5 fear, no confidence he can make the type of saves Gordon regularly has to pull off in Europe.

I had a similar feeling prior to the Cologne game in 92. Performance levels need to undergo a similar transformation as it did then to get a good result IMO. McStay and Collins were outstanding on a truly great European night.

Can this current team do something similar?

There is no question that BR”s “house” style means we look more porous at the back than in the days of Neil Lennon’s house style.

Even then I recall sitting in a bar in Costa del Sol right to the bitter end as Barcelona horsed us 6-1, but not being exposed to that kind of result as a regular event as has been the case under BR, has I think left a scar on our memories.

So do we change our house style over all or accept what Rumplestilkin say in the TV series ‘Once Upon a Time.’ ?

” Magic comes at a price dearie”

The power of magic has waned recently due to a bad spell of injuries (see what I did there) so we naturally pine for what was “normal” but I do like the magic approach that started with BR’s arrival.

Seriously? This is getting hard to believe!

Probably means Hendry at RB then? Or a back three? That would mean Forrest wide right. Would have gone with him as a second striker.

Their apprarent crime in a interview with SCIAF Director was although they dealt properly with both cases, they didn’t go public at the time!!!

The response was reasonable as in protecting the victims

    Really quite thorough reportage.

I look forward to regular bulletins with same degree of thoroughness on the SFA Investigation when it finally is made public.

  18. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Suppose there’s always Gamboa, but hasn’t had much game time.

Would have gone for the lad Naismith at Ross County. Good in defence and going forward. Puts in a great cross, which is something we lack, especially from the right.

Though weren’t dapper unless you had a matching snakebelt

  20. Most teams in world football struggle when pressed effectively, with the exception of an elite few. So what? Well, the trouble with Celtic is that we like to build the game from the back, but don’t have the calibre of player to do so effectively and more importantly consistently well at the highest level. Therefore any coach knows, set up to press them and they will give the ball away. The domino effect is that we then lose our rhythm and confidence goes quickly and the game then becomes a struggle.

It will be interesting to see how Zenit and Mancini approach the game. If they’ve done their homework expect to see the high press. If that happens we will need to move the ball quickly and effectively like we did against Hearts to succeed in the game. Then again they might go for something more conservative. However given that Mancini knows how Brendan sets his teams up from his time in England, i would be surprised if we are allowed time on the ball to build the game.

So the big questions, who will win the tactical battle and do we have the quality to overcome??

Ps. Edouard to start for me in front of Sinclair. Sinclair on current form is unlikely to offer anything. Would be delighted to be proved wrong though.

  23. I would not start with Scott Sinclair, I would go with 3 centre mids KT left of the 3 , JF right of the 3,KT and JF to get forward and one of the centre mids, if its 3 at the back go with Moussa and Edsonne up front and work their defenders, if 4 , start with Moussa , really concerned about the amount of injuries we have.

  24. I think their best player is Emiliano Rigoni — right winger / current joint top scorer in this season’s Europa League .

Leandro Paredes is a fine player too . Heavily linked with Real Madrid when he was at Roma but went to Zenit . Italian fly a kite media have him being back on Real’s radar.
