5 games in December, 5 poor results to avenge

833

Celtic have five games still to play this month against teams they have recorded two draws, three defeats and no wins against this season.  Hearts and Rangers conformably recorded home wins against Celtic while St Johnstone won at Celtic Park.  Udinese were fortunate to escape Glasgow with a point thanks to a late penalty, while Kilmarnock demonstrated their unpredictability by taking, then losing, a three goal lead.

There was a bit of optimistic chat over the weekend that three of our next four league games are at home but these are the teams we need to beat to win the league.  If Celtic come through this month unscathed in domestic football they will win the league, but despite current good form, this will be a huge challenge, starting against Hearts at 15:00 on Saturday.

  1. Embattled Rangers winger Sone Aluko has found an unlikely ally in John Yorkston after the Dunfermline chairman said the player should not be hit with a potential two-game ban.

New Ibrox recruit Aluko will learn this week whether he is to be hauled before the SFA over the dive row that overshadowed the SPL leader’s 2-1 win over Dunfermline on Saturday. And the 22-year-old could be offered a two-match suspension from Hampden Compliance Officer Vincent Lunny if the lawyer decides there is enough television evidence to take action.

Aluko fell to the ground in the box even though footage shows there did not appear to be any contract between the midfielder and Martin Hardie. Referee Steve Conroy pointed to the spot and Nikica Jelavic converted what proved to be the match-winning goal in the 2-1 victory.

Dunfermline manager Jim McIntyre insisted Aluko dived and branded the decision “a disgrace”, but Yorkston believes Aluko should not be handed a stiffer punishment to compensate for what he perceives to be a costly mistake by Conroy. He said: “I think anyone who watched the incident on television is of the same opinion of the manager. We are obviously aggrieved just now, but the bottom line is that the referee makes the call. I do not see what this SFA panel thing is going to do, give the boy two games? If the referee had got it right all he would have got was a yellow card.

“If the boy is found guilty, all he should be given is a yellow card and not a two-game ban. If the player has committed an offence, he should not get a heavier penalty because the referee missed it. I just think the punishment procedure is incorrect. The bottom line is that if the referee had seen it as a dive, the player would have been booked, so how could you change it to a two-game ban because the referee missed it?”

Yorkston knows these kind of decisions could come back to haunt his club at the end of the season, especially with the team just one point clear of basement side Aberdeen. He added: “Whatever the SFA come up with, it’s not going to benefit Dunfermline and it’s not going to make it right for Dunfermline. We have lost the points full stop. We can’t chalk off the penalty and make it 1-1.”

JOHN YORKSTON KNOWS THAT IF IT WAS A DIVE THEN IT WAS A RED CARD NOT YELLOW AND A TWO GAME BAN.

  4. The Scottish sports journalist Graham Spiers announced on Sunday that he was leaving his position at The Times after five years, saying that he was accepting voluntary redundancy in order to pursue other interests.

The news, announced by Spiers on Twitter, prompted fans of his work to speculate as to what the journalist planned to do next, with many gently ribbing him about perceived club affiliations.

Before retweeting some of the most amusing suggestions, Spiers did rule out possible next step, saying: “Of the zillion rumours on here of where I’m off to next, can I quash one: I’m not about to become resident pianist on a revamped Scotsport.”

If there will be no repeat, then we can only revisit what has become one of the most talked about Scotsport moments. Music’s loss was journalism’s gain.

tom daly is excited at the prospect of displaying his talents next year at the commonwealth games in the glasgow, he is looking forward to appearing in one of the greatest diving arenas.

he said ” some of the most famous divers in history have appeared here, john mcdonald, brian laudrup, snakesmith and shauunny aluko. guys like me and greg luganas can only dream of this.

  9. Yorkston has a point. Aluka`s` dive` benefitted Rangers to the detriment of Dunfermline. If any ban weakens Rangers, Dunfermline most certainly will not benefit but rivals might.

  22. Not surprised by Yorkston’s comments today. A horrible individual. Chris Sutton was right on the money that day at Rugby Park when he said the Pars had lay down. Yorkston has never forgiven Celtic and never will. He hates us with a passion.

It is a shame as the Pars are actually a club that I didn’t mind in Scotland. Their fans were always alright when I went there as a kid with my Dad. My old man always liked Dunfermline too as Jock had some success there and he also said they were a great team in the 60’s and Celtic have had some great matches against them.

Yorkston is all that is wrong with Scottish football and I expect him to be fast tracked up the SFA ladder. He comes accross as a bitter man.

  24. Yorkston and the referee of the day forgot to honour the minutes silence that all other clubs in Scotland held in respect of the late great Bobby Murdoch. A truly world-class footballer and a gent to boot.

They (the ref and Yorkston) hid behind a story that the SFA/SPL had not formally written to advise Dunfermline of the minute’s silence.

The match ref at East End Park that day?

Yeh, you are ahead of me already aren’t you?

  25. Shieldmuir Celtic on

    Re Jungle Jim 9.51.

Is Yorston saying that if Dunfermline don’t benefit, there should be no punishment? Surely if the Rangers’ player is found guilty of diving, then he should be punished, and since his club benefitted from his diving by getting a penalty kick, then they should be given some appropriate punishment.
