8 days before we see Celtic war face

292

How many preseasons have we seen Celtic style to throw off lethargy before finding their rhythm when league business starts?

Our preparations often fell short when it came to Champions League qualification but the domestic marathon is a specialty of Celtic.

As Ange Postecoglou said, his style concern is to prepare the team to win games. He will not be remotely concerned with a result against Norwich tomorrow, instead he is likely to take risks in order to test and tax the squad.

We’ll wait another 8 days before we see Celtic’s war face. Enjoy the end of the summer strategy, whatever the score.

Who’d win between Jamie Smith vs James McFadden?

JS played well in a few our ‘Road To Seville’ games and domestically.

JMcF became darling of the media after he snubbed us.

  4. When the question is who will win the Spfl next Season comes up, my first port of call is Paddy Power and they are making Celtic 6 to 4 on Favourites.

The Huns are splashing the Bassey cash and are bringing in quite a few. That in itself creates uncertainty , how many of the newbies are going to make a big impression , is an impossible question to answer.

When they brought in Ramsey & Diallo last Christmas many thought we were done, well we know how that worked out,

They have lost arguably their 2 best players from last Season so they will do well if 2 of the newbies reach their standard,

We had a disastrous start last year , we are most unlikely to repeat that, without that bad start we would have coasted the League.

I think we are stronger than last year, but you never know lads that starred last year could kick on to better things but by the same token they could just as easily go backwards.

There are so many permutations right now only a Fool would call it.

Now and then there are Fools such as I, Celtic to be Champions again.

Well balanced and thoughtful take on the ins and outs of the transfer business. If you are interested I posted last week about this very topic, quoting an article by a Sunday Times (I know, mea culpa) journalist. I thought he made some rather telling points. IF you are interested I have copied it for you below.

    Regarding transfers and players in/out.

Never a great reader of the Sunday Times (since the Ozzie Sherman Tanker took it over), I happened to read the Sports section today in a mate’s house. There is an interesting article by a guy called Jonathon Moorcroft on the theme of “fans’ transfer mania”. A good read in its own right, but the bit that caught my eye was on the stats regarding player turnover during the close season.

Basically he said that the correlation between success and squad stability falls heavily in favour of the latter. “The analysis reveals the general rule that the best performing teams (in the upcoming season) have much more stable squads than the least competitive ones (who tended towards large player turnover).”

He then goes on to quote a number of examples from both sides of the argument. From 2009 – 2017 the four clubs making the lowest % of signings were Bayern (6 league titles and one Champions League); Barcelona, who enjoyed the greatest period in their history; CSKA Moscow, three titles and three Russian Cups; and IFK Mariehamn, who won the Finnish league for the very first time. During one of those years the most active club with transfers was Diyarbakirspor in Turkey with a remarkable investment in over 96% in a new squad. They were relegated at the end of the season. As were Bulgaria’s big spenders that season.

Food for thought regarding the way Ange/Celtic are doing business?

Thanks for letting me know MARSPAPA and AT 👍

  9. Just finished listening to South Africa’s Failed run chase against England at Old Trafford at the the cricket.

    2 points :

The commentators kept referring to a player batting for SA as Henrik Larsson. This had me singing along about the king of kings and also a bit mystified. Only when I got home and checked the scorecard I realised it was actually Heinrich Klaasen. No relation. Still made me smile though.

Delighted for the young boss lady who runs the ticket office at Old Trafford Crocket ground that they actually got the game finished with all the rain around. Refunds for such a key fixture would have been a nightmare. The lady In question is a huge Celtic fan (they get everywhere) from Northern Ireland and her partner and her attend a fair percentage of our games.

    Great article. Thanks for sharing.

Makes the job Ange did last season even more incredible really.

I doubt rangers can assimilate all their new additions into a winning formula in time to hit the ground running at home and in Europe in the first few weeks but time will tell I guess.

Aside from the Starfelt injury it feels like we are working off of a much more solid base.

We also have a month including 6 competitive domestic games before we need to have things in place for Europe.

If you think football economics and upper echelon salaries are grossly out of sync with those of the spectators, they have a bit to go before they they reach the level of U.S. football, basketball, ice hockey and baseball.

A Washington Nationals player just turned down a 15 year contract ( yes that is FIFTEEN ) for over 440 million dollars.

    ——————————-

They assimilated at least 3 of them fast enough to crush EPL Club West Ham a few days ago, with 2 of them scoring. As for hitting the ground running, Moyes said post match, “They were faster, fitter, quicker.”

Great memory of Roddy McDonald’s late winner vs rangers one midweek in that goal watched from exactly that spot.

Leaving at that exit was always pretty hairy after a big European game or a rangers game mind you !
