90 minutes of European drama ahead

443

The juices are flowing ahead of tonight’s crucial third round Champions League qualifier against HJK Helsinki at Celtic Park.  Not only is it the first competitive game Celtic have had something to play for since winning the league at Rugby Park almost four months ago, it will be one of our most important games of the season.

The Finnish champions are midseason and have already negotiated an earlier qualifying round.  After recent August disappointments against Sion, Braga (how little we knew about them at the time) and Utrecht, Neil Lennon will know only too well the pitfalls of summer football.

It will be a long and tiring 90 minutes for the players but a special Celtic Park atmosphere should see them through.

Best wishes to Morten Rasmussen, who joined FC Midtylland yesterday, or to tell the fuller story, was removed from the Celtic payroll with around £250k in compensation heading our way.  Morten arrived in January 2010, shortly before Robbie Keane and a host of other loan signing pitched up at Celtic and squeezed his chances of first team football.

Tony Mowbray was replaced by Neil Lennon two months later and Morten was clearly not in the new manager’s plans.  It all looked promising for him when he came on as a substitute, scored a goal and turned the game against Hamilton Accies in his first week at the club, but it was pretty much downhill from there.

Lesson here: for several years we signed too many players.
Enjoy the game!

  3. Hey Folks,

Does anyone know if Celtic TV is mac friendly yet?

Been wanting to subscribe for a few years as living in Barcelona but I have a mac.

    Thanks in advance.

    Chris

  4. I am not privy to the inner sanctum of the board’s business plans…obviously….but I know this much : do not sell Big Vic W…..if we progress in Europe,he will prove invaluable and the returns would far outweigh his sale value.

A season or two down the line, when a move for him is irresistible and he has matured further, then okay. But for now, please retain him.

  13. Although reaching the Scottish Cup final had helped Hibs seal a significant number of season tickets – sales at that point said to be around 7000 – Petrie estimated 2000 supporters from last season had failed to renew, while he believed the disappointments of the past two years had resulted in some 3000 “lapsed” season ticket holders. As part of the club’s drive to persuade those who hadn’t committed, a group of volunteer fans embarked on a three-day effort to contact as many of the non-renewing season ticket holders as possible under the “Let’s Work Together” banner, the initiative also helping gather feedback from supporters.

Although no specific numbers were disclosed, in thanking those supporters who had bought a season ticket, Hibs

included the “hundreds who have renewed” since Petrie’s appeal.

Petrie said: “We are grateful to all supporters who, in these difficult times, have committed to help the manager in this vital pre- and early-season period as he seeks to build a new and improved squad for the season ahead.

Hearts have also announced today that they have sold out their ticket allocation for the first Edinburgh Derby at Easter Road on 12th of August.

I agree with all of that. However we can’t be complacent about our income because the Rangers games was the last one where there was a potential doubt about getting a seat if you weren’t a season ticket holder. That’s now gone.

For a variety of reasons, I’m missing 3 of our 1st 4 league games. If I hadn’t recently got a salary increase, I’d definitely have considered cancelling my book and going on a match by match basis. Would I lose my compulsion to go without my book. Who knows? I suspect it’s a possibility.

Can’t wait for tonight though (and the mad dash along to the bus station for the last No 10 after the final whistle).

  18. Olympic gold in one of the ole sittin’ down sports, again:)

All the very best to Michael Jamieson and the bould bhoys for later on today.

Cheers….wish I had bought the tickets yesterday!!

  20. Paul67 et al

Will admit to looking forward to tonight’s match with some trepidation, (or should that be intrepidation) but really that is what football is, or should be, all about. Not knowing what is going to happen. What we hope is going to happen is for the Bhoys to get their and our season off to a good start, before we raise the League Flag, and the roof on Saturday. Cannot make it to Glasgow this evening, but can I say, with some mitigation, that I was there the last time we played the Finnish champions! Be there on Saturday though! Hail Hail!

  21. Ki off to QPR…..I think. For £6m…..maybe.

If so,then surely we can keep VW? And from what I’ve witnessed pre-season he sure looks like he enjoys playing for us.

    HH !

so where abouts will you be starting from to make you 90 mins from The Yucatan?

  23. Paul

for once, i disagree with you there…

“for several years we signed too many players.”

for me, it is not the NUMBER of players but rather the QUALITY

if they are good enough, we should try to sign them

we can make our BEST money via player sales

    enjoy the match

    guessin with Commons, 2-0

    without, maybe 1-0

    we can do it !

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has agreed to join Juventus, according to Italian agent Fabio Parisi.

The FIFA agent is based in Milan and represents former-QPR defender Taye Taiwo, and according to Eurosport, Parisi has revealed the Arsenal captain has signed for the Italian champions.
