90 minutes of European drama ahead

443

The juices are flowing ahead of tonight’s crucial third round Champions League qualifier against HJK Helsinki at Celtic Park.  Not only is it the first competitive game Celtic have had something to play for since winning the league at Rugby Park almost four months ago, it will be one of our most important games of the season.

The Finnish champions are midseason and have already negotiated an earlier qualifying round.  After recent August disappointments against Sion, Braga (how little we knew about them at the time) and Utrecht, Neil Lennon will know only too well the pitfalls of summer football.

It will be a long and tiring 90 minutes for the players but a special Celtic Park atmosphere should see them through.

Best wishes to Morten Rasmussen, who joined FC Midtylland yesterday, or to tell the fuller story, was removed from the Celtic payroll with around £250k in compensation heading our way.  Morten arrived in January 2010, shortly before Robbie Keane and a host of other loan signing pitched up at Celtic and squeezed his chances of first team football.

Tony Mowbray was replaced by Neil Lennon two months later and Morten was clearly not in the new manager’s plans.  It all looked promising for him when he came on as a substitute, scored a goal and turned the game against Hamilton Accies in his first week at the club, but it was pretty much downhill from there.

Lesson here: for several years we signed too many players.
Enjoy the game!

Remember our raffle.  All proceeds go to the good causes; The Haven, Cancer Respite Centre, Blantyre, Oscar Knox Neuroblastoma Appeal, Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and Aberdour Primary School Parents Association.

Also there seems to be some doubt over when the £700m super-duper-stadium-casino is going to be built. (thumbsup)

Thankfully the ‘Moonbeams of success’ seem to be on the horizon. I’m told Sevco Utd FC Rangers (but only if your not the tax man) Glasow CIty FC666 have a very good chance of winning a double this year and getting in to the nation wide rounds of the Ramsdens Cup, each player receives a supper of their choice if they get to the final, provided they have paid all subs and annual membership fees up to date by then.

    It’s gonna be moonbeamtastic.

  4. Topcorner , about 7:30

Celtic are showing it on the big screen pre-match.

Get in early and cheer a Tim to olympic glory.

Ps. You going on Friday ?

  5. Looking forward to tonight, wish I could make it to Paradise but alas I’ll have to settle for Celtic TV!

Play like we did against Inter and I’m sure we’ll win

  9. Hey Folks,

Does anyone know if Celtic TV is mac friendly yet?

Been wanting to subscribe for a few years as living in Barcelona but I have a mac.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Cris,

I emailed Celtic T.V a couple of months ago. I have a subscription to Celtic t.v and watch the football no problems when i’m at home in Turkey, but i can’t watch them when i’m at work in North Africa. I contacted them and asked if i could watch the games on an apple mobile device. They said it’s not possible. So i don’t know if an apple computer is dofferent or not. You could email them at http://www.celticfc.tv/contactus

If you can’t use this link then let me know and i will pass on an email for you.

RobertTressell – It’s an even shinier, brighter, more dignified moonbeam than you imagine.

For the Ramsdens Cup is not sponsored by the seen-better-days fish and chip chain, it’s sponsored by the largest Independent Pawnbroker in the UK.

  16. The fact that Wanyama is attracting interest from top epl sides is not surprising to me at all, but it should certainly tell us something. As soon as i saw the guy play, i thought that he “has epl written all over him.” Regardless of ability, he is exactly the TYPE of player that epl clubs love, and I believe – the type of player we should be targetting. He is exceptionally physically strong, has a good engine, good in the tackle, and versatile in terms of position. I really believe we should already be looking at getting another of this TYPE of player into the squad in order that when we do finally sell Wanyama – we have a replacement already installed.

African-origin players have a huge amount to offer in a league like ours, where robust physicality, strength and all-round athleticism are key against teams who are repeatedly referred to as ‘organised’ and who try to ‘unsettle’ Celtic with ‘in your face defence’ and hopeful high balls to a lone striker.

The epl sides know this, and include a number of such guys in their squads – but we continue to appear a bit lightweight, and moan and complain when we are outmuscled. One of the reasons MON’s team were always in with a chance on any European night was that we were never likely to be outmatched physically. That changed dramatically under Gordon Strachan and we have never really recovered.

Ciani is a similar type of player – good strong defender although not the biggest, and would attract epl interest too if he did well for us. Ditto with Papa Diawarra (now at sevilla) who we were linked with last season. All those guys, regardless of whether we get them or not, are the exact type of player we should be targetting. Wenger at arsenal only goes after a certain kind of individual, and I feel we should be doing the same.

Wanyama, for me, has the ability to go on to become one of the top players in the world. We have to hang on to him at all costs for the moment – he could be worth a fortune to us.

If you subscribe with promo code CELTICFC you get a years subscription for 40pounds.. It should give you that option when you log onto their website.

    Hope that helps…

  19. Don’t really know that part of town so well, always seems well-stocked on Celticbars, and if I had my thinking cap on earlier would have suggested The Kingdom also.

    …Ummm…

    Foxy_1888 – Much as I like Bellamy I fear he’s past it.

If he’s the sort of player we need we should look at younger ones like Chris Packham or Michaela Strachan. (thumbsup)

Noticed, in passing, that Graham Spiers is back at the Herald. I guess it didn’t work out at the Times. Or should that be The Times? Maybe the Editor noticed what Spiers hadn’t, the elephant in the room!

    Glasgows Green & White!!

  24. Also Sannabhoy seem to be a few texts flying around today asking each other does such and such a bar deffo have the game, due to the inability to pay a one-off fee for the game as mentioned above.

    Buyer beware ten…

So have Premier Sports become an alternative to ESPN? Have they got the same Celtic games but with delayed transmission times to enable them to offer a budget price?

  27. Celtic Mac- Spiers took the dundy from News Int, walked out with a big fat cheque (not Robert Maxwell), much to Leggo’s consternation.

  28. ASonofDan – the wife used to work with Michael Jamieson’s da in the DWP a number of years back and he tipped him to come good at these Olympics. Didn’t know he was a fan so that is even better.
