May is not out, the manager is not formally in place yet, but there’s an early bit of transfer rumblings underway as Celtic begin the process of building a squad for an attack on The Nine.
In response to speculation linking Celtic to one of his players, Motherwell chief exec, Alan Burrows, wrote on Twitter, “figures in papers are often educated stabs and not a true reflection on either what one/any club might be prepared to pay or the other might be prepared to accept.”
In short, any inquiry from Celtic for David Turnbull is at an early stage and conversations will not be around the figures reported.
We have 93 days like this until the transfer window closes….
Like you, I enjoyed watching Patrick Roberts. He is a gifted player and good professional. His could have been a permanent signing for Celtic but Pep Guardiola had other ideas. Now he has signed a new contract, keeping him at at Manchester City for another three years, a club he will almost certainly never play competitively for, while simultaneously agreeing to a one year loan at newly promoted Norwich.
It is hard to escape agricultural metaphors when watching what the tier one clubs in England do with young talent. They are a crop to hoard and sell, not to consume. City paid Fulham £12m for Patrick four years ago. His new contract will be worth several millions per year, and when his value is right, they will sell him. This is a business model, independent of first team considerations.
A season in the English Premier League could be enough to raise a fee in excess of £20m, but there is a risk going to Norwich. Patrick’s talents are most valuable unlocking packed defences. Players of craft are less valued the further down the league you go, where robustness and counter-attacking football has become mandatory.
He would contribute his share in that Manchester City squad, or at Celtic, but his bit-part season at relegated Girona is a portent of what could lie ahead for him in Norwich. At least he’ll be able to catch the tunes on North Norfolk Digital.

Good morning CQN from a very wet and windy Garngad and the weather isn’t great either?
As we watch Liverpool returning from Madrid with the Cup, their fans line the streets.
Obviously their council and club know how to plan things.
Think back to last week and Glasgows shambles of a parade for the tr3ble tr3ble, the council and Celtic are a joke. I said at the time standing in the rain that the bus was never coming through the crowds as there was no barriers to distinguish roads from pavements. Also the police were just walking about, no order or preparations or was this deliberate on the council part. It certainly seems so as I could have organised that shambles better.

As you say , it was indeed a shambles. I initially couldnt believe we were hosting a Rugby Cup Final on the day of the Scottish Cup Final and there was no attempt whatsoever from Police Scotland to ensure the bus would get through. Only in this country ……..

Apparently Peter Lawwell’s title is Executive Director, Head of Operations.
Interesting and when you look at what’s been happening over the last 18 months or so the issues become apparent.
Obviously in his role as head of operations, he means all operations including football.
Brendan Rodgers saw himself as head of football, a clear conflict of roles and responsibilities.
Keeping to one side that were supposedly a Football Club… first and foremost.
If a business has the same person in the role of Chief Executive and Chief Operations Officer you would expect that business to be very small.
Isn’t it just crazy to have this situation in a business turning over £100M.
Also surely conflicts abound, the way you’d incentivise a CEO is surely very different to the way you’d incentivise a COO.
Who makes sure the COO is doing their job properly?

In the last year I’d argue all of that has been proven to be the case. The man has undoubted talents and abilities, Yet without the checks and balances of a proper structure with someone in a position of authority for many years the weaknesses are bound to come to the fore.
For me the restructuring of Celtic PLC and Celtic Football Club is long overdue.

While I`m in the mood. We often here of how dreadful Scottish Football is ( ever since Sevco were born , it would seem) and that it is too easy for Celtic. That being so, why did Celtic fail to win in ELEVEN of the League games we played?

Interesting wee story online
ITV’s Scotland correspondent Peter Adam Smith has revealed on Twitter that he has had a chat with Benitez regarding his situation at Newcastle.
Smith has disclosed that Benitez told him he had consulted former Rangers scout McParland about the Celtic managerial job, and that the Spaniard is open to taking charge of the Glasgow giants in the future.
Smith’s tweets said :-
“Interesting chat with Rafa Benitez. He’s still in the dark about his future at Newcastle & any takeover bid. Also told me he consulted his friend Frank McParland (ex-Rangers scout) about the prospect of the Celtic job. He decided against for now, but would consider it in future.
He told me there were no talks held with Celtic, but he was very aware of being linked with the job.”
This could be nothing more than a polite declining of a job he never intended to take, or an attempt to tell Mike Ashley he had other options but the interesting bit for me is the Deniability involved i.e. Benitez was aware of speculation linking him but, rather than dismiss it as tabloid gossip and pie-in -the-sky, he talks it over with someone he thinks is familiar with the Scottish landscape.
There are so many back-door approaches to tapping up players and managers these days that when PL says “we never considered anyone but NFL” you’re best to take that with a large pinch of “Aye, did ye?”
From my own point of view, Benitez was likely to get more attractive offers than Celtic and he is being polite here but Davie Moyes, and his agent, did not show up here because of a sudden interest in the Scottish game. I believe nothing I read in the tabloids and even the quotes from players and managers have to be read with a code key that most of us don’t have.
That’s probably why we rely so much on body language interpretation :-)
