Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

  1. Think the ole MSM are way behind as usual, and NFL is already on record as saying it was all down to Gary Hooper, his representatives, and the buying club.

Pretty big clue to me, or maybe MSM were just waiting till Clliftonville were despatched and the build up to the Elfsburg game or are they just lazy.

The bid being acceptable still doesn’t count him out of next week’s game, best wait and see, great amount of money for Celtic, and only having a year on his contract.

Still a big gamble by the board, if he leaves before the CL game.

  2. NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He’ll miss us more than we miss him.

Not be long before he realises this………sadly.

Nobody has Elfsborg home in their book

    ——-

Should the Bhoys secure their place in the third qualifying round, tickets for the next European tie will go on sale IMMEDIATELY after the game tonight. The Ticket Office at Celtic Park will be open after the end of the game.

It looks extremely likely that Swedish champions, IF Elfsborg, will be the opponents. They hold a 7-1 first-leg lead over Latvian side, Daugava Daugavpils.

And Celtic will play Elfsborg at home next Wednesday, July 31.

Tickets for the game will be on general sale to all supporters, with Season Ticket holders being able to purchase their tickets at a reduced price.

Remember, Saturday’s friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach (Kick-off: 3pm) is also included in your Season Ticket.

If Gary does indeed leave, as seems almost certain, then he leaves with my thanks for his goals and service to the club in his relatively short time with us and also my best wishes for the future.

  10. If Hooper decides to go …..well it’s his decision . I imagine the club has offered him the best they could within the constrictions we have and the player has decided he’d get better elsewhere…..It’s a well trodden path……….not many better their circumstances other than financially when they take this path………in my opinion.

Hooper has been good for Celtic and Celtic has been good for Hooper. £5m. Thank you and good luck son. Not a legend by any stretch but a worthy player who will have more than money than medals when he retires.

    If you believe the papers…

Everton want Hosiner from Austria Wien

    Hamburg want Jelavic from Everton

    Celtic want Rudnevs from Hamburg

I’d pay £5m for the first two and a bit less for Rudnevs…

but wages is the sticky thing isn’t it.

  13. Who can condemn Hooper?,he has gone for the money, good luck to the last Celtic player to EVER score against the now defunct side from the south.

  14. Thought Paul had made a mistake saying The Great Scottish Run was October 6th as it is normally the first Sunday in September. Having checked on the date he is right.

Weather could be very iffy !

I said as much last night – Celtic are probably keener on cashing in on Gary Hooper than the player is to leave at the moment.

It’s Hooper’s decision, just as is was Victor Wanyama’s decision. I hope he stays … even if he does run down his contract.

It amazes me that anyone on here would know what the DUP logo looks like.

  18. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

Hooper is very replaceable at £5m imo. Nial McGinn should be standing by his phone …£1m would get him and he scored more than Hooper last year in a much weaker team.

  20. Quantum, there is no such thing as too cold for a 10k. Too warm is another story.

Steinreignedsupreme, if he’s going I’d rather we got the money and invested in a replacement.

  21. Off to the golf,promises to be a balmy 80+ degrees today,(note to self,remember the suncream},Hail Hail.

  22. celt for life on

I would be flabbergated if Hooper is being offered wages north of 50K at QPR.

Out of interest what is he being offered to sign back on and what would it have taken for him to sign it?

Worth taking a £22.5M risk for!!

  23. If Hoops leaves then thanks for the goals and some great memories. This is the reality of our transfer policy and hopefully the new signings will be as successful.

Izzy’s run and cross to a sliding in Hoops to score against them will live long in the memory.
