A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

When you think about how long this swindle has been going on unabated and backed by the media and football authorities, this will be the first time the facts have been printed in the press since liquidation.

I hope it starts a major media debate, it’s about time the business sections of the media got involved, what other business would this happen and be left to sports writers to declare the rules ?

I really hope that it will be a catalyst for other clubs to reignite the fire that burned when their fans rejected the SPL shoehorn in 2012.

I fear though that, similar to Phil’s Downfall, the Herald will take cold feet, under threats/ pressure, and reject the ad.

  8. Buying a ticket for the LC semi v sevco? See when guudetti gets cemented in the first 2 mins and madden does nothing about it? Don’t complain cos you’ve paid for that. See when the media blast it out all week about the ‘old firm’ being the greatest derby and normal service is resumed….or see when Campbell takes his seat with the rest of the blazers after hammering the fine wine in the hospitality suite…..or when the orcs belt out the famine song and none of them get lifted….or see when we get a mysterious offside against us…..see when some young guys get lifted for shouting hun…see when some tims take a hiding outside off a big group of cowards but the media say one side is as bad as the other? Don’t complain. You get what you pay for.

One article in the national press will carry more weight nationally than 2 years of internet dialogue.

Of course there will be many who will try to ignore it or dispute it, however when the facts are in black and white at least we are on record as saying the big lie is false and it is not and never was in our name.

If the member clubs will not contradict Doncaster then somebody has to.

I am just thankful that we have many clever, articulate and dedicated supporters who refuse to be complicit and will do more than just talk.

    They deserve our thanks.

I agree,Doncaster presented Celtic with an open goal with his statement.

    We passed it up.

If Celtic state that Sevco is Newco, that the team we play on Feb 1 is a first for us both, then we are open to criticism. I understand that.

But a response to the utter tosh spouted by Doncaster, well,we f….d up again.

It’s like the old Dick Emery sketch wi the wee choob who never learns, but just says-I got it wrong again.

He at least had the excuse of being thick. I’m fed up of making excuses for this board over their handling of this.

Man up,tell the truth. And if you are concerned about your personal safety-something which hasn’t stopped the rest of us-let yer pals in FOCUS deal wi it.

Don’t hide behind mealy-mouthed platitudes. You are supposed to be leaders. Standard bearers for our club, representative of our support.

Just put the baw in the netty and frighten the life out of them without saying a word :))))))))))).

Sarver knock back puts down a marker to others .£20m+ and we might listen bears .

  16. I have no doubt about John Guidetti’s ability, the guy is a natural, no doubt about that. What every good striker needs is abilty, (he has that in spades) confidence (ditto) and service. There lies the problem methinks.

If he gets the service he WILL score loads.

What we need, I know I know, is a classy midfielder as I’ve said on here hundreds of times but what worries me is that if I can see that how come our manager doesn’t. Commons is the nearest thing we have to what we need but he lacks pace and mobility.

Come on Ronny, get Messi signed up pronto!Or failing that, Iniesta will do me!!

  17. Fed up reading idiots going on about the semi final game, if you don’t want to go Don’t go but the guys that are going are going because Celtic are playing, not because they miss the Huns, want to give sevco money, want to be part of a lie or to moan about referees ok. We are only going to support Celtic

Is the “dirty little secret ” the length of time that it took them to be wound up in a business sense (as it obviously takes a lot less in a practical sense to wind a zombie up. Ask them when they came out of liquidation?)

I’ve been contacted recently by a few people seeking information. I don’t have much to contribute nor do I wish to contribute anymore, but this is what I do know and made known to a select few people back in September:

Betts & Ellis have taken up singing. Sweet, sweet music for everyone – even Rangers fans & Sevconians – provided somebody in London has balls to take it public. If I had been involved in Rangers or either Sevco, I would be very worried. If I was a bampot, I’d be worried about a deal being cut.

As you all know, there is an ongoing criminal investigation so I can’t and won’t say more. Indeed, I would urge you to let plod deal with the crooks and focus, instead, upon the corruption and incompetence of the SFA, SPL & SPFL where you can make not just a big difference, but THE difference. In that respect, I think the CQN initiative is an excellent start and would hope that it’d be endorsed by fans of all clubs in weeks to come.

The main concern I have is for the safety of our players. I reckon there are one or two(!) in that Rangers side who have only one intention.

    ##############

How you doing mate . I agree with the above point , but I also would put it down to celtic not having anyone to combat that threat . If a wee Bertie , or a davy hay were in our side they wouldn’t even think of it as they would know what’s coming in way of retribution . You , tinytim , Myself and a few other posters on here have been crying out for some steel in our midfield for ages . .( if only we could have held onto Wanyama ) as yet the people who matter at the club sadly can’t see it , Or seem to think it’s not required .

  26. John guidetti is a striker and like most confidence is what is needed.

He’s obviously also trying to convince himself and keep the chin up.. we should be backing him and singing his name at games.

I for one hope we get him on a long contract.

And bloody pair him up with either griffiths or scepovic for a good 3/4 game run.
