A confident striker and a scared defender

965

John Guidetti has put himself out there by letting us know he’ll score a hat-trick in next month’s League Cup semi-final.  I’m not normally an advocate of showing confidence, if not contempt, for opponents prior to a game, but Guidetti’s comments come against a rich canvas.

The player is in a rut and will be feeling the weight of disappointment with each passing chance.  He is a goal-scorer, he’ll score again, but he needs to find the spark to fire-up the second part of his season.

You will remember Kenny Miller ran his guts out in his early months as a Celtic player but it was not until a game against oldco Rangers in September that his landmark first Celtic goal arrived.  Kris Commons has been a scoring sensation throughout his time at the club apart from his second season, when he took until April before scoring, a delightful chip over the oldco keeper.

Ahead of both of those games I knew it was all going to come together for Miller and Commons.  John Guidetti has set himself a target.  He will probably score before that game but he knows how important it is to perform at Hampden.  He is good enough to deliver on this one, don’t bet against him.

Contrast John’s comments to those last week from newco defender, Steven Smith, who said, “The fans will probably be dreading [the Celtic game]because in the big games this season, we haven’t done well. Everybody has got their opinions and are entitled to them.

“But with the results we have been having and the way we have been playing, I don’t think we can think about it too much.”

You will be hard pushed to find a clearer example of the language of failure: “dreading”, “haven’t done well” and “the way we’ve been playing”.  You normally need to work a bit to find a player’s insecurities.  It’s good of John Guidetti to mark his card on what to expect. Give me a confident striker over a scared defender any day.

The Second Annual Celtic Supporter’s Féile is on the weekend of Friday 30 January 30 – Sunday 1 February in Philadelphia.  The events include live music each day, the US premier of The Asterisk Years, with a Q&A with Paul Larkin and Graham Wilson of Beyond the Waves podcast, as well as live coverage of our first ever meeting with newco Rangers in the League Cup semi-final.

You can find more information, including how to book, here.

After the Doncaster statement I emailed CFC for their view and receive:

    Good Morning

Thank you for your email regarding comments made recently by Neil Doncaster. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding, I had an extended break at new year and only returned to work at the end of last week.

As you may expect I have had a few emails about this matter and in order that I can respond consistently and as quickly as possible I have prepared a standard response based on my understanding of the situation from Celtic’s perspective.

As we announced in February 2011, we have a standalone strategy that does not rely on any club.

That strategy has been successful. We do not need to talk about any other club. We focus on our club.

    These are the facts:-

    * The Rangers Football Club plc went into administration in March 2012 and liquidation in November 2012.

    * Sevco Scotland Limited, later renamed The Rangers Football Club Limited, applied to be, and became, a member of the Scottish FA and the Scottish Football League in summer 2012.

    * In the Scottish FA and SPFL competitions, there is a team called Rangers FC, which plays at Ibrox, trains at Murray Park, and has the same crest, strip and supporters as before.

    * We need to play whoever we are asked to play in those competitions.

As a club, we stopped referring to the Old Firm some time ago, as we did not think that the term was relevant.

We will continue to focus on our own club and being as successful as we can be by beating whichever team is put in front of us.

To date I’m not aware of any plans for the Club to comment further on this matter however this may change, this is only my own assessment of things as they stand at present.

    Best regards

There does however seem to be a contradiction in “As a club we stopped referring to Old Firm some time ago”, and “this is only my own assessment”.

ps re CFC Supporters’ statement – ye canny wack bullet points for clarity.

Ziggydoc1, you haven’t wached the newco then, they are pish. Really bad. It’s not complacent to treat them as lower division promotion hopefuls. They are not the same.

    —————————————————————————————————————-

You’re right, I haven’t seen them at all, but I’ve seen enough games that we’ve lost to inferior opposition and we need to forget about how bad they are meant to be and prove that they are.

It seems pretty clear to me. The don’t consider the team playing at Ibrox as Rangers FC to be the same as the Rangers that were our bitter rivals for many years.

Our manager is a bit wet behind the ears on how the MSM operate in this bigoted wee Country and at times he is to open with them this of course can lead to his players being to open ie J.Guidetti .Unfortunately they need to be more guarded or only answer questions which have been given to the club at least 2 hours before the interview in order that we do not find the manager or players being misquoted as obviously big John Guidetti has been. H.H.

  15. Sevco were able to beat Inverness reasonably comfortably. We’ve lost to ICT and performed poorly on a few occasions. This game will be their Universe. They will sweat blood. Add Mibbery. This is a one off cup game which we could lose. Save the gloating for afterwards. It’s a no win game for us against the leagues newest club.
