A decade of special Scottish Cup Finals

194

Recent seasons have seen Celtic dominate the Scottish Cup like no team has in history, taking the prize in five of the last seven years.  That success aside, the other five of last 10 finals have also been special reasons to celebrate.  Inverness and Newco won their first Scottish Cups, St Johnstone had their first and second successes, while in 2016 Hibs won their first ‘Cup since before the Wright Brothers got off the ground at Kittyhawk.

Delighted that James Forrest and Tony Ralston are included in the provisional Scotland squad for the Euros, alongside Callum McGregor and Greg Taylor.  James has not been a regular starter for Celtic in four years and has been hamstrung by persistent injuries throughout his career.  But when fit, as he is right now, he is one of the most productive players in the business.

He also enjoys himself at Hampden.  Don’t bet against him delvering there and in Germany this summer.

Good luck to Jeremie Frimpong in Dublin tonight, where his Leverkusen side take on Atalanta in the Europa League Final.  German and Italian teams have a terrible record in this tournament, winning only one Uefa Cup/Europa League between them this century.  But goodness, it was an important one.

Of the 20 finals since Celtic lost in Seville, 12 have been won by Spanish clubs and seven of them by current holders Seville.

  1. The provisional squad for the euros contains 4 Celtic players and 7 former Celts.. Not bad for a club getting criticism for its signings

    Wouldn’t be surprised.

Butland the bosman who is now worth gazillions, – it’s the hope that kills them.

I see that some are suggesting that we sign some of our former players who have left. I see Armstrong, Forster, Juranovic Tierney and Eduoard have been mentioned in reports.

I am of the opinion that we should not resign any of them. It rarely works out well. Bertie Auld is probably the last time it was successful.

*absolutely as the old saying goes “you can NEVER go home again”, charlie nick anyone

  6. Atalanta are all over leverkusen for the first 25-30 mins of this final and its no surprise there have scored 2

Although leverkusen should have pulled one back

  7. Italians by far the better team

Leverkusen not allowed to play their game.

Frimpers should be wide right that is his best position.

    2-0 HT

    Sevco at their best.

Probably the most complete left back in the European game just now, definitely the best ever Brazilian left back.

Stuart Armstrong – heart of a mouse, struggles for a game at St Mary’s

Kieran Tierney – injury prone since leaving

Juranovic – not as good as AJ

Forster – won’t get a third chance to sign for Celtic

Edouard – 70k a week at Palace – England or abroad for him

How Rangers beat Celtic in last Old Firm Scottish Cup final

Celtic were eyeing a league and cup double – Rangers were seeking a second cup final win of the season. Sound familiar?

But, considering their dominance of Scottish football, it is perhaps somewhat surprising that Saturday 4 May, 2002 was the last time the two Glasgow giants met in a Scottish Cup final.

And it is Rangers fans who will be hoping history repeats.

That day at Hampden Park, the Ibrox side came from behind twice against the league champions before Peter Lovenkrands netted a dramatic last-minute winner.

Old Firm legends Arthur Numan and Johan Mjallby, who both played that day, help us recall one of the most thrilling Old Firm finals.

    —————

I suppose they have to give their favourite team some hope. Although, that’s been the issue since the new club crawled out of the Rangers grave.

They are carrying the expectations of the old, financially doped, fictional club. One that didn’t ever exist as it was sold to the gullibillies.

It was all propped up on loans and failed investments.

Maybe the BBC should ask if that sounds familiar! As Sevco are living that same existence, and if it wasn’t for UEFA’s Financial Sustainability Regulations, they’d still be getting away with it. As the SFA will always look the other way.

When is an opinion not an opinion?

    When it’s a fact.

Another (probable) fact is that none of these players are on Celtic’s famous ‘radar’.

  12. Armstrong is in the non profitable/decline of his career

KT – would defo take back

Juranovic – thanks but no thanks

Forster – 36 now, see armstrong

Edouard – not worth the pennies

Well deserved lead. Disappointed in Leverkuesen. Even more disappointed in the commentary team, which includes wee Sally.

  15. If leverkusen can get one back before 80 mins, they will be asking questions

And may be able to force extr time

At the moment, it looks like a tall order

    Expected more from them tbh.

However, it will be Atalanta’s first major trophy since the 60’s. Happy to see them do it tbh. Been the better team and not your typical Italian team either.

Going for it when they have the ball.

Been a good game. Would be a much better finish if BL got one back, as you say. 👍

  17. Atalanta have been absolutely brilliant throughout. From a neutral perspective this has got to be one of the best team performances in a European final.

  18. Atalanta’s Lookman is a player.

That hatrick will put him way outside our league if he wasn’t already.

  19. ziggydoc1

Atalanta got it right all over the park

Maybe if Leverkusen had got a goal at 2-0, Frimpers blasting over the bar from a scoring position, might have asked questions. Dont forget though Atalanta crushed Liverpool en route when they were dreaming of Dublin.

  20. Stevie Clarke is taking a chance picking so many injured players, 4-5 at least if you count Ryan Jack as a footballer. Not sure about Ben Doak either, if you want to take a couple of young players fair enough, it’s 26 out of the 28, then take a couple of fit young Scots, not players who have hardly played since their respective injuries.

Not bad for a former Charlton player.

PS, Talking about the Orient Express bus…if it hadn`t been for the former now assassinated [by the Zios] Japan Prime Minister, Shinzu Abi, who refused to vaxxinate the Japanese people…then Celtic`s recent history might have been very different if the Zios got vaxxing the Japan people then Celtic fans might never have gotten to know KYOGO, MAEDA, HATATE, etc…imagine that!
