A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

Remember to give me a shout if you would like to write an article for CQN Magazine, articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk.

  1. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

These matches against HelsingborgsIF are starting to look like huge tasks, considering the injuries we have.

Hooper, Stokes, Murphy and McGeogh all injured in America for circa a million £’s or $’s.

    £20.000.000 at stake against HelsingborgsIF.

I know what my priority would have been.

  2. playfusbal4dguilders on

That season, domestically esp, there were a lot of missed pen.

one v hearts at home, that I think cost us the League.

Problem solved-can the school play centre half?

Philbhoy- times are tight for the ole Tims; when the offer to play the friendly was taken did PL see it as a £1M inthehand, rather than the ole £20M in the bush?

I think there isn’t a team in Scotland that would hav eturned down the money for that game.

  4. Mort (and blantyretim) from previous thread,

Just been able to read back. So, sorry I haven’t replied. Still bright here but VERY breezy. Can’t be long now before the rain appears.

Mort, been up and down, to be honest. Sunday lunchtime kick-offs don’t help the blood pressure, as I can’t usually get to the games. Hope you and your better half are enjoying not just wedded bliss but the early morning wake up cries.

What a traumatic experience that was. As well as being a complete waste of time and money………………………………….

  6. How come Portsmouth had to field a team of eighteen yearolds last nigh and yet

the Hun’s kept most of their first team squad last season, thanks to Duff & Duffer?

Cri de couer from ole Cadizzy-

‘Hi, can you post a request on CQN for me please?

In Torrevieja. Any good bar for games?

Found one for League games but they don’t have premier sports’.

The Quality Street Gang smell blood and know this is a fantastic opportunity. I reckon we will have the tie won over in Sweden

  12. Glasgow’s Green & Whyte!!!

Dundee United have confirmed that debts owed to the club from Rangers oldco have not yet been paid, contrary to claims from newco owner Charles Green.

In a statement, United insist sums due from a Scottish Cup tie played at Ibrox last season remain unpaid and say the matter now rests with the Scottish football authorities.

    ……………..

Apart from the whole of Parkhead Cross, the School in Sprigfield Rd, The tenements in Springfield Rd and Celtic Park?

    No, not a lot!

  14. So Chuckles lied then!

    Never!

Anyone in the msm asked him about this I wonder?!

  15. I got properly snided at on here last night for having the temerity to call Thatcher a fascist (small case). I was taken aback. So was my missus. Consequently, I am returning to lurker/occasional poster status. I really don’t need that kinda crap from fellow Tims. It was hun like in its sleekitness.

    Therefore : adios.

    HH!

  16. So the club that wants to be rangers is selling season books like hot cakes (for less than £300 a pop by the way)

I imagine it’s the same customers that used to buy from the Old club.

I’m sure all this cash rolling in is really cheering up the small businesses that Oldco shafted.

I’m sure the tax man is looking on with a greedy look on his face.

As our host was fond of saying: ‘pay your debts’.

By the way, classic marketing ploy – talk up the queues and the demand for your product, get others to join the queue, get involved in the hype. Simple, effective.

It seems our erstwhile rivals fanbase are as gullible as ever. They will never learn.

May their road to SPL mid table mediocrity be a long and arduous one.

  17. By a complete fluke (a very lucky one for me) VCLXI and I from this site travelled to the Basel away leg with the official party, another Timmy7 from this site was the unlucky one who missed out.It was a fantastic trip most of the players were fantastic particularly John Hartson, fantastic memories from then forward till Seville.

VCLXI and I had never gone abroad to see Celtic with the official party before and did not know there was a dress code,so to say that we were under dressed was an under statement…….:-)

Probably the only fans ever to get into the up market lounge at half time in Basel wearing the hoops :-) The looks on the Basel high heid yins was faces was to behold.

The little girl from Celtic accompanying the party was freaking out….It was magic.

We even blagged our way into the pre match press conference on the morning of the match at the stadium, they must have assumed with the smell of drink that we were MSM!!!

Pity about the score, though it did lead to the best year I’ve ever had as a Celtic supporter.

  18. Hi Paul,

“We will need to be better prepared next week.”

    Aye but how?

With a short closed season, warm-up games and money spinning Exhibition matches/tournaments how do you prepare the team for hugely important European matches?

From my prospective we are much better prepared to meet the Swedes than we were for the Finns (was that good Football or good fortune?). A win in this round would set the season up nicely.

Let’s try some of the fringe ghuys in the Hielands and Focus on the CL.

Sincerely believe Neil and the bhoys can do it.

  19. DBBIA-Cadizzy is better getting a bus to Cabo Roig, about 15 mins journey, plenty of good bars showing games.Best one is Bar Med just behind the main drag,on a Saturday it has every EPL game with 3pm KO as well as Sky/ESPN games.Few bars in Torevieja show football, more Spanish town than most places, with no Bulldog English Breakfast joints.

  21. @STVGrant: Charles Green laid the blame of non-payment of monies to Dundee United at the door of the SPL on Monday. Comment sought from the league.

“SRS -agreed; on Shortbread this morning they had to mention the tackle”

Well, it is all the Hun is remembered for – without that challenge he would have disappeared the way Andy Kennedy, Charlie Miller and too many other ‘wonder kids’ from Ibrox have.

I’m sure Siggi Jonsson would see the irony inm the situation, given that Souness all but ended his career and it was one of his team that came off worse at Pittodrie.

  23. VCLXI,just realised you beat me to it………..

I forgot about the volley ball team…………..getting old.
