A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

  1. @STVGrant: Charles Green laid the blame of non-payment of monies to Dundee United at the door of the SPL on Monday. Comment sought from the league.

Neil Doncaster responded…….”How many times do I have to tell you? That money was just resting in my account”

  2. Som mes que un club-Same set up mate,I think a couple of articles on Saturday might have prevented you posting a winner :}

Yer in luck,PHILVISRETURNS is on at the moment.

Maybe it’s your lucky day and you should consider a small investment on the lottery…

  4. I see Neil Lennon attended the U20 game at Fir Park last night. I dont think there has ever been a manager at Celtic that has put as much time and effort into the club from the boys team up.

    God Bless Neil Francis Lennon.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS – The question is, does he feel lucky?

  6. Making my daily donation to Bet Fred retirement Fund down in Springburn earlier and caught the end of a heated argument about deadclub and their new signings,

anyways Ian Black seemed to be at the fore of the debate, when one of the hordes asked,

“here mate ye think ian blacks rangers class?”

now being the shy gallowgate type generally id have left well alone, but hey that may have been seen as impolite, so I says

“I think he has all the attributes to be a rangers legned”

“you mean legend?!” says the questioner

“naw he effing dizny, hes trying to be smart” says his mate.

In that company it wouldnt have been hard to be smart, anyways they left me in peace to select my losers for today.

Yeah I know its petty, but kinda brightened up a dull day.

  7. Has everybody forgot that Durrant played for over 10 years after that career ending tackle? His playing time at Oldco was limited because he wasn’t good enough to get in the team ahead of Gascgoine, Stephen etc etc. He decided to stay and be a reserve, it was only after Smith left that Advocatt booted him out and in his mid thirties he played over a hundred games for Kilmarnock

Derek Ferguson was the far better prospect at the time of the tackle, history was rewritten to make out that Durrant was the greatest talent in the history of the game.

Durrant has made a great living out of the pity vote

  9. Sooooooo……….Chucky’s lies have made it onto national radio. 5Live had Dundee’s statement on their last sports report.

Maybe he’s of the school that thinks there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

In that case he should re-educate himself,at reform school.

Because, methinks the reincarnated rankers are going the way of the dead rankers.

I do enjoy miki67’s posts (as well as your good self) and I would tend to find myself falling on his side of political thought. He often highlights the many things that are wrong in this world which I tend to agree with. However I also enjoy the role of Devil’s Advocate that has been taken on by your good self, and I have often questioned myself because of it.

Re the Simpson tackle on Durrant.

There had been on-field trouble at Aberdeen-Rangers games for several years before that, maybe as a result of Aberdeen displacing Rangers as our main rivals for top spot.

I remember Willie Johnston leaving his stud marks on John McMaster’s throat around about season 1981-82, and there was a John McDonald red card for headbutting an Aberdeen player in a 0-4 (IIRC) defeat for Rangers at Pittodrie shortly afterwards. There was also a 3-0 win for Aberdeen at Ibrox in season 1985-86 (John Hewitt peach for their third) when two Huns were sent off.

Watch out for some, “meaty” challenges, including one from a certain A McCoist in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axcdOAigTo8

The build-up to the Simpson-Durrant match was poisonous, with the press hyping up the trouble at previous matches.

Any one of several players on either side could have badly injured anyone from the other side given the atmosphere surrounding Aberdeen-Rangers matches at that time.

  15. The Old Schools a dump, the sooner it is raised to the ground the better,And has lennon signed a striker and a centre half, no i did,nt think so. its all spin from him and lawell.2 yes men who are quite happy to win the title make a bit of money out of the group stages of the champions league.and i will defy anyone that comes on here and says thats not true.and another thing if celtic thing its going to be easy winning titles well they better think again ,the truth being apart from a few in the team ,we are not a good team .the reason being in my opinion that we are not very good is we dont have good coaches, and it was proved time and time again last season, and if we are all honest on here, one of the reasons we won the title last season was the state rangers were in .and that my friends is the truth of the matter.and if you are a promising player at celtic, then im afraid under lennon you wont get much of a chance, for instance murphy for watt ,says it all .

His reply kinda surprised me tbh

saying that the fact they were arguing over whether ian black was rangers “class” possibly highlights just how far they have really fallen.

maybe the masonic penny has finally dropped for some of them.

A Falklands true story: In the aftermath Ministers at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office were meeting to decide who would replace Rex Hunt as Governor.

Various names came up and were discarded when the Minister looked at one of the FCO Officials, a well known fop with gay tendencies.

” How about you Philip (name changed to protect the innocent)do you fancy the job?”

“Do’nt be silly Minister” he replied, “if it was’nt the sailors it would be the sheep”.

“Lennon n Mc….Mjallby – If Labour had been in government at the time, they too would have sent the troops in to liberate the Falklands from the Argentinian military junta.”

Labour administrations were faced with the same problem twice during the 1970s when Argentina were conducting manoeuvres around the Malvinas.

The situation was resolved using diplomacy on both occasions when Argentina were informed there would be a military response.

On the third occasion no warning was given to Argentina and they took that as an indication that they were free to invade – we then had the most expensive party political broadcast in history as a result.

  22. The away tie in Basel was a nightmare. I was in Sydney. No TV coverage, no radio, no teletext. 4am I was watching the game on my mobile phone. An old Nokia 5020, getting text updates from CQN’s Albert_Kidd. Hell on earth. Must rival what Terry Waite went through.
