A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

Greenjedi, do you remember ‘Ted’ McMinn. He burst into the scene at ibroke and was being touted as the next Jim Baxter.

McMinn had the misfortune of not receiving a bad injury, which meant he was playing enough to be found out to be pssh.

If McMinn had received an injury like durrant, they would be spouting the same crap about him. I.e. a world class talent ruined by injury. And like durrant it would be tripe.

No doubt that Aberdeen team could look after themselves and had a few cloggers in with the genuinely skilful players. It was a good balance and they were a very good side.

And as St Michael’s Boy said the feud between the teams had been running for a number of years.

The McMaster incident was considerably worse by some distance as he required emergency medical attention on the pitch at Ibrox after the junkie stamped on his throat.

I think the whole thing started in a League Cup final when Fat DJ went down off the ball pretending he had been elbowed and the Aberdeen defender was sent-off. After that it carried on from game to game.

Re the Simpson tackle on Durrant.

There had been on-field trouble at Aberdeen-Rangers games for several years before that, maybe as a result of Aberdeen displacing Rangers as our main rivals for top spot.

I mention this kid of thing because there is much ado about nothing coming out of Celtic Park, and I am just waiting for some kind of forward movement. Two big games coming up : yes,Ross County is a big game, kinda historic. And Helsingborgs,a massively crucial game if we are to move forward.

    Bear with me:

It is fair to say that many Christians in America can safely be categorized as radical fundamentalist with a literal view of the Bible. These types of groups have influenced such organizations as the Protestant-led Ku Klux Klan. They were explicitly Christian terrorist in ideology, basing their beliefs on a “religious foundation” in Christianity. The goals of the KKK included, from an early time on, an intent to “reestablish Protestant Christian values in America by any means possible,” and believe that “Jesus was the first Klansman.” Their cross-burnings were conducted not only to intimidate targets, but to demonstrate their respect and reverence for Jesus Christ, and the lighting ritual was steeped in Christian symbolism, including the saying of prayers and singing of Christian hymns. Many modern Klan organizations, such as the Knights Party, USA, continue to focus on the Christian supremacist message, asserting that there is a “war” on to destroy “western Christian civilization.”

During the twentieth century, members of extremist groups such as the Army of God began executing attacks against abortion clinics and doctors across the United States. A number of terrorist attacks were attributed to individuals and groups with ties to the Christian Identity and Christian Patriot movements, including the Lambs of Christ. A group called Concerned Christians were deported from Israel on suspicion of planning to attack holy sites in Jerusalem at the end of 1999, believing that their deaths would “lead them to heaven.” The motive for anti-abortionist Scott Roeder murdering Wichita doctor George Tiller on May 31, 2009 was a belief that abortion is criminal and immoral, and that this belief went “hand in hand” with his religious beliefs. The Centennial Olympic Park bombing in 1996, as well as subsequent attacks on an abortion clinic and a lesbian nightclub, were made by Eric Robert Rudolph; Michael Barkun, a professor at Syracuse University, considers Rudolph to likely fit the definition of a Christian terrorist, whereas James A. Aho, a professor at Idaho State University, argues instead that Rudolph was inspired only in part by religious considerations.

Anti-abortion violence, Christian Patriot movement, and Christian Identity movement

Christian views on abortion have been cited by Christian individuals and groups that are responsible for threats, assault, murder, and bombings against abortion clinics and doctors across the United States and even Canada.

Christian Identity is a loosely affiliated global group of churches and individuals devoted to a racialized theology that asserts that North European whites are the direct descendants of the lost tribes of Israel, God’s chosen people. It has been associated with groups such as the Aryan Nations, Aryan Republican Army, Army of God, Phineas Priesthood, and The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord.

Needless to say I could go on and on about more of these crackerhead movements and lunatic groups in Christian America- and even amongst the Political Elites of Washington as in the Bush administration passed into law broad tax cuts for the rich, , the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, severe crackdowns on immigration, Social Security cutbacks, electronic surveillance, and enhanced interrogation techniques. He announced the U.S. would not implement the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, which had been signed by the previous administration but never ratified by the Senate- and of course the PATRIOT Act.

Then there are armies of Doomsday Cranks obsessed with the Book of Revelation such Pat Robertson: media mogul, television evangelist, ex-Baptist minister and businessman who politically aligns himself with the Christian Right in the United States. He has claimed that some Protestant denominations harbor the spirit of the Antichrist, and his claims of having the power to deflect hurricanes through prayer; he has also denounced Hinduism as “demonic” and Islam as “Satanic.” Robertson has issued multiple condemnations of feminism, homosexuality, abortion and liberal college professors. Robertson was criticized worldwide for his call for Hugo Chavez’s assassination and for his remarks concerning Ariel Sharon’s health as an act of God. Robertson made American national news in October 2003 for interviews with author Joel Mowbray about his book “Dangerous Diplomacy”, a book critical of the United States Department of State. Robertson made suggestions that the explosion of a nuclear weapon at State Department Headquarters would be good for the country, and repeated those comments on the air.

Planned Parenthood is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism — everything that the Bible condemns.

On the week of September 11, 2001, Robertson discussed the terror attacks with Jerry Falwell, who said that “the ACLU has to take a lot of blame for this” in addition to “the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays, and the lesbians [who have] helped [the terror attacks of September 11th] happen.” Robertson replied, “I totally concur.”

Less than two weeks after Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people, Robertson implied on the September 12th broadcast of The 700 Club that the storm was God’s punishment in response to America’s abortion policy. He suggested that September 11 and the disaster in New Orleans “could… be connected in some way”.

On November 9, 2009, Robertson said that Islam is “a violent political system bent on the overthrow of the governments of the world and world domination.” He went on to elaborate that “you’re dealing with not a religion, you’re dealing with a political system, and I think we should treat it as such, and treat its adherents as such as we would members of the communist party, members of some fascist group.”

Robertson’s response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake also drew controversy and condemnation. Robertson claimed that Haiti’s founders had sworn a “pact to the Devil” in order to liberate themselves from the French slave owners and indirectly attributed the earthquake to the consequences of the Haitian people being “cursed” for doing so. CBN later issued a statement saying that Robertson’s comments “were based on the widely-discussed 1791 slave rebellion led by Dutty Boukman at Bois Caiman, where the slaves allegedly made a famous pact with the devil in exchange for victory over the French.”

In my eyes none of the above is in any way representative of Christian thought or compatible with the teaching of Jesus Christ- but that does not stop these raghead’s, malcontent’s and anti-social freaks from calling themselves “Christians”. There is nothing you can do about this, but you can point it out as inconsistent, as hypocrisy and that these people have more in common with cult obsessed fanatics than true Christians- in doing so I really don’t see how that is a proof of HATE.

Well the guy that accused you of hate did the exact same thing to me when I suggested that some of these crazy right-wing bomb fixated so-called Christian groups had no affinity with Christ or his teaching: he claimed I was peddling hate.

Personally I think he has a taste for conflict and then trawls the site nitpicking for things to respond to so that he can get a reaction for some reason- maybe for emotional stimulation, a bit of drama. What’s the point of upsetting yourself over a guy who goes out of his way to take offence at the slightest wee thing?

Sorry for the rambling post ( given time I would have shortened it).

  11. Celtic supporters travelling to Saturdays Clydesdale Bank Premier League Fixture at Ross County are asked to allow sufficient time for the 12:15hrs kick off.

Access to the stadium for the travelling support is via turnstiles number 1 -4 which are located at the Jubilee Stand (new stand). The stadium will open at 11:00hrs and supporters are asked to access the stadium as quickly as possible on arrival.

Due to limited parking at the Stadium fans arriving by car are asked to use parking facilities in Dingwall and make their way on foot to the Stadium. Access roads to the ground will close 30mins before kick-off and no vehicular access, including coaches will be allowed after that time.

Grampian Police advise that spot checks will be carried out on supporter’s buses travelling to the ground in relation to the carriage of alcohol.

  19. The Scottish government has no mandate to hold an independence referendum with a second question on increased Holyrood powers, a Commons report has said.

  21. The Scottish Premier League has yet to distribute cash to its member clubs and is unsure when it will be in a position to do so, BBC Scotland has learned.

Clubs were due to receive money from sponsorship and broadcasting revenues at the start of this month but have been told they will have to wait.

The delay is being blamed on cash flow problems resulting from the summer of uncertainty over Rangers.

The problem is also affecting the Scottish Football League.

It is due about £2m from the SPL for their annual settlement agreement.

Several clubs have already contacted the SPL to find out when they can expect to receive payment, but have been told they cannot be paid until the money comes in.

The SPL renegotiated its TV deals with Sky and ESPN after it was decided Rangers would start again in division three.

But the league is still waiting for payment from those deals and a number of other top sponsorship contracts.

It is understood the SPL is hoping to make a payment of some kind this month but cannot give any specific date or figure

  24. Durrant/Simpson facts:

Durrant played more top level matches after that tackle than Simpson played in his entire career.

Durrant was sidelined whilst fit to play at Rangers.

Brian Laudrup was a far better player than Durrant.

    Durrant/Simpson opinions:

Durrant was the 80s John Fleck.

Simpson was the 80s Ian Black.

That match had several, erm, tasty challenges before Simpson assaulted Durrant.

The tackle/assault was bad; carrying him off ‘seated’ on arms with his leg dangling was utterly disgraceful.

  25. ASonOfDan,

Salmond will say that personally he wants a one question poll but if the will of the Scottish people is for an undefined vague option that no one knows what it is but he would quite like anyway, then he will go along with it.
