A few hours of optimism

449

You and I are both optimistic types.  So every year on this day, we remind ourselves that ‘these things even themselves out’, and after a run of difficult group stage draws, we expect Celtic to get a favourable Champions League draw this evening.

Pot 3 could make or break the draw.  Celtic are in this pot and it is undoubtedly weaker than Pot 4; Pot 3 has only one club from a ‘big five’ league, whereas Pot 4 has six.  Drop your cynicism and allow me a few more hours optimism before Uefa’s new computer system determines our fate.

Earlier this week we discussed that Matt O’Riley will become a case study in how to recruit, manage and sell a football player.  Within a few days, Matt is subject to another case study.  He was injured after six minutes football for Brighton.  Today it was confirmed the injury is serious and will require surgery.

This is football.  At any point, your biggest asset can be a second away from being finished in the game (not that Matt is in this situation).  When you are sitting on an offer for a player, but have a game to play against an ‘industrious’ St Mirren, the potential for things to go wrong is a consideration.

In 2010, Andreas Hinkel was subject to a £1m offer to return to Germany.  Celtic were keen to get him off the payroll and recoup some of the outlay on him.  Andreas suffered a crucial injury in a reserve game and was ruled out for the entire season.  That injury cost Celtic £2.5m (wages and lost fee).  Michael Nicolson would have been happy at fulltime on Sunday at more than just the result.

Best wishes to Matt, he will hopefully return for the Paradise Windfall Draw during his convalescence.  At least £4m of his fee is performance related; the chances of collecting this portion took a hit today.

I’m also sitting on a lot of optimism for what the next 35 hours will bring.  Looking forward to seeing Young Boys and Red Star!

  1. To ease the transfer window tension. A tale of carless CQN browsing.

I’m in the car flicking through CQN earlier today (not logged in) and suddenly Julia, age 35, appears with her blonde hair and come hither look and amply filled chest. We are on the motorway, my wife is driving and my thumb ever so casually and accidentally brushes against Julia, age 35, and her ample bosom. Next thing I know Im in my own transfer window, I’ve left CQN and other (dressed) ladies are suddenly smiling at me. Help, what happened ! Now I don’t know if I’ve been redirected to a p@rn site, a scam site or a dating of younger (than me) ladies all aged 35. But I exit quickly (ooh err) as its the wife’s phone I’m using, not mine.

So my problem is do I tell my wife that her browsing history might involve Julia, age 35, with her ample frontage or do I treat it like the 5 way agreement and simply pretend I never saw it.

Honest- love- I- was- on- CQN-CSC

Celtic are about to complete a deal that will make for a total outlay of £20m on 2 players, but graham sourness insists the gap ain’t that big. In what alternate reality do they exist?

Oh for the days when the height of ‘creative accounting’ was a wee brown envelope changing hands in a motorway car park – we didn’t realise we had it so good.

  14. Honestly can’t believe we are in this draw!

Delighted to advise that I am still here ( although holed up in Granada for a number of weeks ). Still reading CQN and season books renewed.

As you might recall I have attended most of Celtic’s pivotal / memorable ( some not so ) games since the early 1950’s. League Cup Final 1957 ( 7-1) , Dunfermline 1965 Cup Final ( Billy’s history changing header ), Lisbon,Milan and the 1979 League decider 4-2. Martin’s 6-2,

Seville but too many others to mention.

A quick read back reflected on other Scottish teams performances in the 50s and early 60s. I actually attended one or two of these great games but the standout was the 1960 European Cup semi final at Ibrox. Rangers v Eintracht Frankfurt. I went along on my own and got a lift over ( I was 12 years old ) and stood at the back of the traditional Rangers end.

Strange experience for a young boy to stand amongst that crowd ,huge number of them from my own city, and experience the hatred towards my kind.

A club I have despised down the years and look forward to a great Celtic victory on Sunday.

Also looking forward to the draw currently taking place.

  16. lets all do the huddle on

i assume we have representatives at the draw.

but is there any need for it?

do they actually do anything for the club while there?

if not then they arent really representing anything and it is nothing more than an expensive fat cat jolly at the clubs expense.

all just so the camera can pan onto them when we come oot the hat.

mind if I ask you to expand TT ‘which I actually enjoyed as my last job’?

*Oh I meant on driving through there I had happy memories of my job on the motorway, loved it and my colleagues plus the money was great, in fact when being interviewed up at Canada House on being asked how much I was currently earning I was asked “why do you want to go to Canada then”, I was tempted tae point at Mrs TT and say it was she that wanted tae go.
