A flash of brilliance from Abada

231

When they went a goal behind, St Mirren provided evidence they can play a bit.  They never actually made a chance worthy of the name, but they passed with speed and accuracy and forced Celtic’s more advanced players to work back and cover.

New manager, Steve Robinson, bemoaned their luck, “a ricochet” and a ball that “bounced off a face”.  Liel Abada may disagree.  The breakthrough came after he was pinned to the touchline by three opponents.  His control was so precise he broke free and forced a foul that led to the opener.  Tight games are so often won by a flash of brilliance from a gifted talent, we have a few in our ranks who can fill that role.

As Jota prepared to take the kick, I said, “It’s pointless sending in a high ball, we have no height.”  I promise to repeat this often until the end of the season.  What height we have is limited to two central defenders, the absolute entry-level attribute for any team.  Good deliveries, though, are hard to defend.

You will have noticed our passing seemed introverted at times.  Overhit or inaccurate passes have been a feature of recent games, sapping confidence which inhibits future outcomes.  A series of games on poor pitches, including a wintered-looking Celtic Park, has not helped.  The Plastic Pasta Pitch on Sunday will be no better, and it’s pointless sending in a high ball, we have no height.

Can’t help but feel that we are missing a trick by not converting a much better percentage of our corners/free kicks. Even a 10 percent improvement would take a hell of a lot of pressure off us. I’m sure we must work on them in training but we are not getting much of a reward from them. HH

“On the conversation about attending games it isn’t really quite fair. I’ve watched Celtic in maybe half a dozen countries, been to most major (ha!) grounds in Scotland, have, what I believe might be an unrivaled collection of Celtic t-shirts and ran downstairs with tears and snot dripping to tell my good lady we were spanking them 3-0 at half time.

I do love it over here but the hardest part is not going to the games week in, week out. OK, that and family who all still reside in Scotland but……

As maybe one or two of you know that is why I have been a regular lurker, occasional podium chaser since year 1, a Celtic TV subscriber since day one, and the first fan to build an app with the fastest goal and updates via push notifications, something I did for free.

I know much of this seems to stem back to the ‘you at the game today caller?’ quips but while game attendance is the holy grail it is not the only measure of being a fan, more than a fan, part of our beating hearts.

I’m on here because, well, we are a worldwide family now and us Scots and Irish get everywhere. Regular game attendance, while an obviously massive part and the 12th etc etc is not the only measure.”

Excellent, articulate summation of the emigrant fan dilemma. Well, apart from one possible exception……..if you have a family member you like to keep at 3,000 miles distance!🤣

We played Fenerbahce under Deila . 2-2 and 1-1.

I watched the away game in a Dublin CSC and met some Fenerbahce fans. I mentioned that we had a Turkish player, Ciftci, and they couldn’t stop laughing as they had never heard of him.

it was pretty sweet when we equalized!!

Starfelt was very unlucky with a lot of headers go got on the end of early in the seaason. Possibly, he is being marked more closely now. Did well at the goal last night

We don’t seem to try the late runner into the box tactic, e.g. one CH hanging out to drag some people with him creates space of he gets a run on the markers.

as a wee guy, I used to stay out the box so don’t know what I’m talking about😎

Radio Clyde Super Scoreboard – Andy Halliday – anyone heard the amount of times he mentions ’The Old Firm” when he is on – definitely at the wind up.

Being tagged along with them is a concern, Old Firm Fans – yeah – it was the Old Firm Fans that wrecked George Square recently – and you should have seen what they done in Manchester a few years back!

Now that they know we don’t like the term – they (SSM) mention it at every opportunity.

  10. “Hoops supporters made their views clear as they unfurled an expletive-laden banner from the Green Brigade section ”

`Expletive laden` ? Hmmm… as with the BBC`s second goal for Sevco, I must have missed the laden expletives .

Our board should hang their heids in shame mind.

A question I posed before the game thread started was…

no matter opinions re the zombies we have to acknowledge we would be nowhere near an automatic CL place for Scotland if the proper rules were applied when they were liquidated.

    Eyes on the CL prize

I hate the term Old Firm and don’t think we should work with Sevco in commercial ventures but I have no objection to Celtic giving an opportunity to our fans living abroad an opportunity to see them play. I’m sure it will be a great morale booster for those Celtic fans. I’d rather we weren’t playing Sevco though but I won’t lose any sleep over it.

I did enjoy reading Herald Sport today though. I’m finding it difficult to accurately identify a word that sums up the sheer vehemence of Chris Union Jack’s article. Maybe WORDLE can help. 🤣

You were underestimating the effect Nick Walsh will have when “taking charge” of the Livingstone game.

He gave the monkeys three (3) penalties in one game in Paisley a couple of seasons ago.

I apologise for posting the BBC link. Someone sent it to me in a text. I also confess to having watched a recording of Sportcene last night even though I had been to the game.

Maybe if you send me your email address I can seek your permission before I post any Celtic news links in future.

  20. Let me get this straight, just four weeks after helping pack out Celtic Park when we played the Rangers, the Green Brigade display a home made banner opposing us playing the same club in er Australia?

Just wait till their Ma finds out she’s missing her best linen….

  21. cmon Celtic Mac,

surely you can see why the objection ?

We have to play something called Rangers here in Scotland to fulfill our obligated Fixtures.

An exec once said “we manage our business on our own, we are not half of anything, we are a stand alone business model” or words to that effect.

now we are actively promoting a “friendly” match with thems, which probably increase both entities fees.

if we went looking for games in Aus, we could do it stand alone.

If NSW picked up the phone to celtic plc and said we have an idea what about a tournie as a “homecoming for Ange” during the world cup, we will pick up all the expences and even give you a fee worth a whole season of SPL proze money,

    Sounds Bonzer

only thing is you have to play rangers ?

what would you do if you owned the business ?

stand alone, or old firm together ?

    CQN BOOK CLUB

I have just finished reading YOUNG MUNGO by Douglas Stuart, the follow-up to his first novel SHUGGIE BAIN which won many awards including the Man Booker.

Beautifully written, Young Mungo is the story of two young gay Glasgow men who fall in love. One is a Celtic supporter and the other a Rangers man.

They face a daily struggle against sectarian and homophobic abuse and violence among the West of Scotland underbelly.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. There are heartwarming episodes of great kindness and compassion from the most unexpected of sources.

    A terrific read.

Young Mungo is due for release on 14th April.
