A goal can change the world

130

In football, the world changes on goals.  Not skill, general play, or doing enough to deserve the win.  When you are trailing in title chance, running out of games and level in the last 10 minutes of a match you really need to win, a goal changes the world.

Celtic should have been out of sight after a dominant first half, however, we have seen this story too many times this season for anyone to think the same would follow after the break.  In the early moments of the second period, Tomas Cvancara missed the second chance when clean through on the Dundee goalkeeper, and that seemed to spark the home side into action.

Dundee are not a good team, but they did what they needed to do to get back into the game – get possession inside the Celtic box.  Colby Donovan was the unfortunate defender whose arm met a shot.  If Cvancara’s earlier miss motivated Dundee, the equaliser gave them a further shot of adrenaline.  Celtic were briefly on the rack.

Change came in the unexpected form of Luke McCowan.  With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain flagging, Luke was preferred to Reo Hatate.  I am pretty sure this was about energy.  Luke can get around the midfield better than Reo and that quality was judged most required by Martin O’Neill.

Within moments of that early second half miss, Martin readied Kelechi Iheanacho.  The Nigerian striker came on immediately after the Dundee equaliser and was able to hold the ball, and bring others into play.  These two changes pinned Dundee back, who were not an attacking threat again until a couple of free kicks in the dying moments of the game.

It was a third substitution, Marcelo Saracchi for Kieran Tierney, that completed the win.  The Uruguayan made everything look simple – most notably, getting the ball past the first defender and into the box in a manner that an attacker had a chance to get on the end of it.

When Kelechi controlled Marcelo’s cross and spun to shoot I didn’t think he had space at the near post, but this guy has banked tens of millions already in his career for a reason.  You feel if we could get 90 or even 60 minutes out of him every week, odds on Celtic winning would shorten.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2025-26*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #51 DUNDEE 1 CELTIC 2 (YANG, IHEANACHO)*

    Good evening, friends.

A hard fought for win with long periods that weren’t the best to watch. But a very valuable 3 points as we approach the home straight.

Celtic have now played 51 games, and have won 27, drawn 11 and lost 13. We have scored 89 goals and conceded 60. We remain 3rd in the league but are just 3 points off the top although 5 goals worse off. We have 6 league games remaining, 4 of which are at home. Win all 6 and, at worst we may finish second on goal difference.

My thanks to the 84 folk who dragged themselves away from their Easter eggs to vote.

The total votes cast for each player (with my own nominations asterisked) are as follows –

  20. In the bould bhoys book, Liam Kelly nominates 21 individuals as being the founders of Celtic, much of this confirmed by the excellent Celtic The Early Years by Brendan Sweeney.

The Celtic Star published the facts about these men, if I may repeat some of the facts concerning them, not everything but enough for me to suggest we could do with these types of visionaries , with their charitable beginnings, and their sense of collective purposes. Not afraid to be ourselves alone.

John A MacCreadie: Founding Father Of Donegal Descent

By Liam Kelly 26 April, 2020

his father was the landlord of the Old Empire Bar, on the Saltmarket.

The MacCreadie’s lived on Steel Street, less half a mile from the family bar. It was there that John A MacCreadie grew up after his birth in 1856. The first child of the family,

John attended St Andrew’s School. From there, he went on to St Mungo’s where he was taught by Brother Walfrid, before completing his education at St Aloysius College

In 1887, around the time of Celtic’s formation, John married an Irish immigrant of some prestige – Catherine Hegerty. Catherine hailed from Dundalk and was the sister of the mayor of Louth. Interestingly, the MacCreadie clan expanded their business portfolio beyond the Old Empire Bar at this time, opting to delve into the metal, machinery and boiler businesses. Within a couple of years, John was working on his own as a machinery dealer. He then furthered his independence as he lived with his wife and child, also named John Aloysius MacCreadie, at their own house on London Road in Glasgow’s East End.

according to Willie Maley’s book (The Story of the Celtic), John A MacCreadie remained interested and joined the burgeoning committee of men seeking to establish Celtic Football Club, in a personal capacity. Perhaps this was due to his Celtic connections within the Home Government Branch of the Irish National League, of which he was a member. He was also the first President of the Donegal Reunion Society,

lead member of the Catholic Literary Society and founder of the St Aloysius Association with the assistance of prominent Celtic founding fathers – Joseph Nelis, Joseph Shaughnessy and Dr John Conway.

in late 1907, he suffered with flu, which put strain on his body owing to an underlying heart condition. By 2 January 1908, he had passed away at his home.

A mark of the respect he courted was that almost all leading members of the Glasgow Irish community were present at the funeral, along with a large Celtic delegation, at Dalbeth Cemetery

    —————-

so, Catholic, educated by Walfrid himself including at St Aloysius, became a business success, and an Irish Nationalist.

The Willie Maley creed for Celtic FC, often cited to define the club’s ethos, is: “It is not his creed nor his nationality which counts; it’s the man himself.” As Celtic’s first manager (1897–1940), Maley coined this phrase to emphasize character, ability, and commitment over religious or national identity, molding the club’s foundational identity.

In 2026 I’m very much in favour of an all inclusive Celtic FC on the pitch and in the stands, so Willie Maleys creed fits me well, a club open to all

Key Principles of the Maley Creed:

The Man Himself: Character, talent, and commitment (the “man”) were prioritized over his background or beliefs.

A “Celt” on and off the Field: Maley believed that to be of value to the club, a player had to embody the club’s spirit in all aspects of life.

Recruitment Strategy: Maley prioritized recruiting young, hungry players and nurturing them into the first team, rather than buying established, expensive talent.

Commitment to the Support: He emphasized the honor of wearing the green and white jersey and the duty to repay the fans who came to watch.

IMHO, praise is also due to JF.

His ability to hold the ball and still , despite his years, get beyond the defenders over 5 yards or so, even if he has to turn back and recycle , meant Dundee were pinned back more than at any time in the game.

It might be they were falling back anyway to try to hold on for a point but , for me, JF played a big part yesterday – not for the first time this season and , hopefully, not the last.

    ——

Glad someone posted this. Thought it was a masterclass on how to play the position. I was hoping he would come on when the game got ragged at 1-1. Imo it would be a mistake to let James leave in the summer.
