A goal down but the Celtic story was going to be told

290

A goal down in the second half, having not made a chance worthy of the name.  But the Celtic story was going to be told.  Hearts pushed, kicked and wasted every possible second of the opening 82 minutes of the Scottish Cup Final.  Their game plan worked, for 10 minutes the outcome looked in doubt, until Odsonne Edouard out-witted Heats ‘keeper, Zlamal.  Instead of shooting the Celtic striker knocked the ball forward.  By this point Zlamal’s momentum was unstoppable, he cleared the Celtic striker off his feet.  The penalty was inevitable and a consequence of the maturity of a 21-year-old.

Odsonne’s craft for the winning goal was better still.  He was off like  lightening after Mikael Lustig’s header put the ball beyond the Hearts back line.  Watch Odsonn’e body shape, he opened his foot and drew his right shoulder back, as though to place the ball to Zlamal’s bottom left corner.  The keeper followed the body language but Odsonne turned his foot at the last minute and chipped the ball into the opposite side of the net.  It was delicious.

I did not think anything in domestic football could match the Invincible Treble, secured in such drama against Aberdeen in 2017, but as this journey of success has continued, the drama, the importance of each subsequent trophy, mounts.

Yesterday we retained the Scottish Cup for the ninth time in our history; the first time we won three-in-a-row and the first time in world football a Treble Treble has been completed.  Whatever it is that we are living through right now, let it’s reign be long and glorious!

Condolences of the family and friends of Harry Hood, who we lost earlier.  Harry was part of the successful Celtic team on the early 70s and was the last Celtic player to score a hat-trick against Oldco Rangers.  On leaving football became a successful business man, running some of the best restaurants, hotels and pubs in Lanarkshire.

With the Treble Treble only minutes in the history books, Celtic wasted no time in confirming Neil Lennon would become permanent manager.  We will pick this up later.

And (as well as a but there is usually an and :-)

If you don’t believe in second chances were you against Neil stepping in when Brendan done the bolt ?

Fair play if you were, I think most Celtic fans were glad he stepped in and can’t remember anybody questioning his interim appointment

  2. Let me get this straight, a Manager who stepped in at no notice when St Brendan navigated all the way from the West of Scotland to er Leicester, who beat Hibs away, and Aberdeen and Hearts at Hampden to win the Cup, beat the Noro Rangers at home, Dundee and Aberdeen away and Hearts at home to win the league by a good margin is not good enough to be the Manager of Celtic FC? Who won Leagues and Cups as both a player and a manager with Leicester and Celtic, and who more recently revived HIbernian FC. Not for us?

  3. GFTB,

We asked Neil because it was a mutually logical choice. Neil was unemployed and needed to rebuild his career. We needed a short term fix that could hit the park running.

We got £9m smackers when BR walked out on us. So in theory his appointment cost the club ziltch, in fact he filled the stadium.

How much did we get when NFL walked out on us, and what was the aftermath?

    HH.

  4. I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ve downsized in the dug out.

Lennon isn’t a disaster by any means but we have taken a step or two backwards in terms of coaching and player development.

I like everyone else will be supporting Lennon 100%.

  5. Watching Dundee Utd these two play off games their goalie has impressed if big Dorus is offski and Craig in last year of his contract …

This scouting lark is a dawdle

Right back – O’Donnell fae Killie

Goal scoring midfielder- Turnbull fae Motherwell (back up for Christie/Rogic)

Left back cover – Killie boy or Hearts 16yr old

    Centre half – McKenna ?

Centre forward – Bayo & Griff and at least one other but I don’t know who

    Neil … there’s your homework

  6. GP 5.03pm

I get that … unemployed or not do you not think Neil also has his demands ?

Or do you think … we done him a favour and he should be grateful ?

Neil is a lot smarter than many people give him credit for … he probably likes that

  7. Enough already, Lenny’s the new manager. All the bitchin´in the world is not going to change that. Get over it and move on. The only business that matters now is:

    HAVE WE SIGNED ANYBODY YET?

HAVE WE LET ANYONE GO YET?

    HAS SOUTHAMPTON BOUGHT ANYONE YET?

HAVE ANY OF THE PLAYERS BEEN FOUND DRUNK WITH A KEBAB AT 2.00 IN THE MORNING YET? IN KATIE PRICE’S BED?

WE HAVE 5 WEEKS TO COACH THEM OUT OF THE TIPPY TAPPY SIDE TO SIDE NONSENSE. CANCEL THE HOLIDAYS.

    GET ON WITH IT.

    IN LENNY WE TRUST.

Summer time, and the living is easy, fish are jumping and the cotton is high . . .

Treble, Treble smiles all around. Enjoy the moment, we’ll never see it again.

Lovely story and thanks for posting.

I remember a game at Ibrox, I think we were down to 10 men and Harry was throwing himself into challenges all over the park.

He chased a ball which went out for a throw close to where we were and the pain in his face, from his exertions, was so obvious.

I think Harry scored the winner that day too, a wet afternoon if my (poor) memory serves me well.

I loved him and the fact that he was never capped by Scotland reinforced the facts that Tims didny get picked too often.

I hope we tell the new scotland manger to stick his June intrnationals right up his jacksie.

  9. And as usual the huns had a derogatory nasty song about Harry Hood.

    It’s in their DNA.

  10. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

“Treble treble” – never gets old.

Spent much of last night savouring reports and videos of Celts all over the planet revelling in our unprecedented achievement.

    We are truly global.

As for Lennie – not my preference but he will get my 100% support.

Hope he gets a wise old head in as his assistant.

Essential for him to remain calm in the face of all the garbage which will inevitably come his way next season.

    Hail hail.

The management had every opportunity to research the market and consider what options we had. I was amazed that no other candidates were interviewed to compare with Neil

Now that the decision has been made the board must give him the resources to bring in first team ready players and not to make the mistakes of the past when we didn’t build on positions of strength

My big hope is that Maryan Shved can perform for us the way he shows up in his videos. He could solve one of the positions that we need to fill.

Benkovic back on loan would also be high on my list to sort out

At least Neil is here to make his moves quickly so that we are ready for Europe

  12. St Mirren win. Dundee Utd fail to score a single penalty out of their 4.

    Woeful!

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

    gftb

    Thankfully your not a scout

    Celtic MAC no he’s not

  14. Surprised by the style of the managerial announcement.

If Celtic would have lost the game, would that announcement have been made. If not, why not if he is the right man for the job.

    All seems a bit opportunistic

  15. Notthebus 5.56pm

If we had lost then Neil wouldn’t have kept his part of the deal, so there would have been no job to offer

  16. Nice to see a bit of calm on the Blog today.

    Last night was brutal!

    Now what if we’d lost?

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. GTTS 5.48pm

Exactly … am not a scout just a poster posting their opinion… is that not we all do ;-)

  18. Philbhoy 6.03pm

If we had lost I had already told Dallas Dallas … I was chucking CQN … unlucky for many we didn’t :-)

  19. GFTB

    …….win lose or draw…………aye………ready!

    Only kidding!

  20. Philbhoy 6.09pm

I would love to chuck social media but for me CQN is addictive … plus it’s an avenue for me posting rubbish in my own living room … in real life I wouldn’t get away with it :-)

  21. Don’t post often anymore and the hysterical reaction to the appointment of Neil Lennon as permanent boss yesterday only co firmed I made the right decision.

Funny the two main culprits founded their own blogs in competition with this one. You would wonder why both chose to spend so much time in here insulting all and sundry rather than on their own pages.

Its like deja vu all over again. Neil is described as the cheap option, Peter Lawell’s stooge and a dinosaur. When he left after 3iar he was described as a great Celtic man driven out by Peter Lawell, now he has clinched 8iar he is back to being useless again. Weathervanes don’t swing around as much as some on here.

Minutes after securing the Treble Treble some find an excuse to attack Celtic. Who needs enemies with friends like these.

Ah well back to lurking for this unashamed board apologising, back of the bus,old firmist sheep, happy clapper.

  22. In 1955 after the first televised final Coronation Johnny Bonnar somehow threw the ball in the net 3 minutes from time, the legendary hunden swirl was blamed for that.

4 days later the Bully Wee, who had been well outplayed in the first game, won the replay when Sir Bob had the wee barra dropped for what he labelled too strong a tackle on the Clyde goalie, by a Tommy Ring goal.

Tommy came from a diehard Celtic family and we always coveted him, he won 12 Scottish caps, 8 Scottish League ones, 2 SC winners’ medals and 2 Second Division winners’ medals. So when he asked for a move we were right in there, however, he turned us down for the Toffees.

Although he shone at Goodison he unfortunately suffered a broken leg and around 2 years later moved on tae 3rd Division Barnsley, around a year or so later he was back up the road tae Pittodrie.

At the time we were struggling and had just lost Paddy Crerand tae manure so I asked my da why we hadn’t moved for Tommy, who although in his very early 30s might have been the ould heid required for the Kelly Kids, his response was you only get one chance with Celtic and he had turned us down.

This was the old school way of thinking, nothing tae dae with the money being offered, we were Celtic and that was it. Seemingly that great servant of the club Jimmy Delaney, who had been out of the game for several years due tae a broken arm in a game against Arbroath and was given a free tae sign for manure to help recuperate lost earnings, on his return tae Parkheid with Falkirk was booed by the Jungle.

Anyway 6 years after not signing Tommy Ring I’m in TO when a bluenose told me we had signed Harry Harry. I was beelin as he had turned us down 5 years previously, unknown tae me, or possibly other Tims out there, was that he was going tae sign for the team he supported until his da pointed out the terms, not only was it less than the Wearsiders were offering but less than he had been getting at Shawfield.

Seemingly when he pointed this out tae Sir Bob the response was along the lines but you get tae play for the Celtic. Sounds a bit like Tommy Coyne on initially turning us down as he would be getting less money than at Dens Park was allegedly told by big Billy that he would be getting the chance tae pull the hoops on. That only works when you’re about 12 not when you have a family to rear.

6 months later I’m back hame living again and singing “oh Harry Harry, Lou Macari, Kevin Barry, Harry Harry. Harry Hood along with Dixie was one of the most sung about Celts during my years at hame supporting the bhoys.

I was at hunden that dreich night when he scored 4 goals against the huns but only 3 were given, the 4th was the best one of the lot. I was also at the same venue when he starred against the future Lions in the SC semi and replay, games that caught the Big Mhan’s eye, I’m so glad it did, God Bless you Harry, a great Celt.

Neil Lennon televised interview on BBC, aired on Friday 24th May, transcript below is verbatim of the first question and answer…

Michael Stewart: “Neil, you were at Celtic before. 8 in a row: you started it. What was going through your head and why did you leave?

Neil Lennon: “I was tired. There were other aspects you know: we had sold all our best players; and then there was no Rangers, you know we had won the league by 30 points; and 4 years in a job like Celtic is about right, you know, it’s about right. And I wanted to leave on good terms with the club and I wanted to leave on my terms as well, with maybe the opportunity of one day coming back.”
