A goal down but the Celtic story was going to be told

290

A goal down in the second half, having not made a chance worthy of the name.  But the Celtic story was going to be told.  Hearts pushed, kicked and wasted every possible second of the opening 82 minutes of the Scottish Cup Final.  Their game plan worked, for 10 minutes the outcome looked in doubt, until Odsonne Edouard out-witted Heats ‘keeper, Zlamal.  Instead of shooting the Celtic striker knocked the ball forward.  By this point Zlamal’s momentum was unstoppable, he cleared the Celtic striker off his feet.  The penalty was inevitable and a consequence of the maturity of a 21-year-old.

Odsonne’s craft for the winning goal was better still.  He was off like  lightening after Mikael Lustig’s header put the ball beyond the Hearts back line.  Watch Odsonn’e body shape, he opened his foot and drew his right shoulder back, as though to place the ball to Zlamal’s bottom left corner.  The keeper followed the body language but Odsonne turned his foot at the last minute and chipped the ball into the opposite side of the net.  It was delicious.

I did not think anything in domestic football could match the Invincible Treble, secured in such drama against Aberdeen in 2017, but as this journey of success has continued, the drama, the importance of each subsequent trophy, mounts.

Yesterday we retained the Scottish Cup for the ninth time in our history; the first time we won three-in-a-row and the first time in world football a Treble Treble has been completed.  Whatever it is that we are living through right now, let it’s reign be long and glorious!

Condolences of the family and friends of Harry Hood, who we lost earlier.  Harry was part of the successful Celtic team on the early 70s and was the last Celtic player to score a hat-trick against Oldco Rangers.  On leaving football became a successful business man, running some of the best restaurants, hotels and pubs in Lanarkshire.

With the Treble Treble only minutes in the history books, Celtic wasted no time in confirming Neil Lennon would become permanent manager.  We will pick this up later.

So the buddies are staying up, no friends of ours in the past although I used tae like Love Street, however there have been a few good Tims played for them, the 2 Maccas and Sammy Wilson, even though they would never sell players tae us. Also our goalie coach’s uncle played for them, his mother’s side of the family were massive Tims in Dumbarton and had the same family name as Petec’s mother.

May 1989 before the Joe Miller Cup final last league game of the season we were at Love Street … canny remember the score but MoJo was meant to be in the main stand, not sure if he was wearing his Icelandic jumper but we were buzzing, the Huns must have been at home as I can remember going over the Kingston Bridge showing the Huns the back page of the papers … still say to this day the non-signing of Maurice won us the cup and stopped the bank of Scotland sponsored treble … some scarf seller made a fortune that day with the SuperMo scarves … that was a very eventful day from start to finish still wonder how as a daft 19yr old me & 3 pals made it home that day… but glad we did :-)

    1. Lokomotiv Moscow taking 2nd in Russia means that, should we qualify for the CL next season, Celtic are almost certain to be in Pot 3

Tonight’s final round of fixtures in Italy will decide it. If either Atalanta or Milan finish in the top 4 then Celtic would be Pot 3.

  5. Lennon is effectively on a month to month contract. CL failure will confirm Celtic fans were right and Lawwells cheapskate option bombed.

First league defeat will quite rightly have the fans demanding his sacking. Our revenue is greater than all other clubs combined. Our agents fees are greater than all other clubs combined. Yet we have appointed a failed manager who will take us backwards.

It’s clearly Lawwells preferred choice and after the Mowbray failure and Deila experience this should preclude him from any major decision going forward.

This is the issue with the fans being so divided by his appointment. He will have little or no margin for error. The press, whilst universally calling for him to get the job, will jump on any perceived failings adding more pressure to his tenure. Not exactly what is needed for a crack at 9.

Very good points about Lenny’s time at Bolton. They were in a bad way in the league but he left a couple of days after the new owners took control. During his time in charge the club drastically reduced the wage bill and had a constant threat of administration hanging over them. He even lent some of his own money to staff who weren’t getting paid because of the trouble the club was in. It was a unique set if circumstances and to suggest he just “got the sack” ignores all sorts of other things that were going on

If you look at the CQN article when he left Celtic first time the comments show 100% support for him and overwhelming sentiment that he’d be welcome back. No surprise given the number of points and goals scored that season. Some of the biggest opponents to his reappointment are in there.

I think he’s the victim of being judged against possibly one of the best managers we’ve had, certainly one of the most successful. Thankfully he’s strong enough that he’ll be able to handle it,

  10. “A goal down”……..Was yesterday our last outing of the season the first time we have come back from a goal down this season?…….Can’t think of another off the top of my head.

  12. Re Lenny being offered the management position.

As I stated in an earlier post Celtic PLC is a business and as such its board has a duty of care towards its shareholders to ensure that the best possible candidate is selected for senior positions within the company.

If as is being reported the Celtic board didn’t even consider let alone interview potential candidates for the mangers post that is a gross dereliction of duty. Appointing someone because he gets the Club, knows Glasgow and has a good eye for a player is a poor excuse for a selection procedure. Why not appoint me or any other supporter for that matter I am sure many of us would tick all those boxes.

Now I am sure Lenny is smart enough to know that no business with a £100 mill turnover should promise someone a senior position for simply accepting an interim position. Having been in management myself and having experience of a senior position within the company suddenly becoming vacant due the unforeseen sudden serious illness of the incumbent. A junior manager from the group was asked to fill the vacant position as an interim post. They are informed that if they wish to apply for the post on a full time basis they must submit an application which will be assessed and critiqued along with the other candidates received for the advertised position. Obviously if the interim manager has proven to be a success during their time in the position this stands them in good stead for being appointed to the position on a permanent basis. However time and time again an application from a much better suited and qualified individual is received and invariably it is they who are appointed as senior manager as it is in the best interest of the company to do so. There is no room for sentiment in business.

Celtic’s PLC has badly let down its shareholders by not speaking to or interviewing potential candidates for the manager’s position. So what they are basically telling us that even if Rafa or Jose wanted the gig they had no chance of getting which is mind bogglingly arrogant of them!

Offering someone the Celtic manager’s job to someone in a changing room shower! How professional.

Now having appointed Lenny they had bloody well make sure that back him financially in the transfer market and spend a great deal of the money they are so found of telling us we have in the bank.

Seemingly that great servant of the club Jimmy Delaney, who had been out of the game for several years due tae a broken arm in a game against Arbroath and was given a free tae sign for manure to help recuperate lost earnings, on his return tae Parkheid with Falkirk was booed by the Jungle.

I recall reading a story of a young lad returning from the trenches and on disembarking at Glasgow central station he spotted a newspaper stand board saying he had been sold for for £4,000.

Upon reaching his home, that he thought many times he would never see again, he is greeted and hugged by his family, and with a tear in his eye turned to his father and asked “Tell me it’s not true, tell me we’ve not sold Delaney ?”

He’ll do for me and it seems DD and the rest of the board. If they want Lenny so be it, I know I didnae and that’s based on the RC semi, losing the League up at Culloden the following season where if we had won that night we would probably be looking at 10 in a row right now and also walking out on us when he possibly though the grass was greener down at Bolton.

However, in saying that I also recall that when TB took ill he came back up north at WGs’s behest to fill the role. He was still there `when “take it on the chin” forced him off the team bus and he had tae make his own way tae hades and also was available when that impostor was given the bum’s rush.

And let’s not forget when the real charlatan bottled it after the double treble and wanted out and DD told PL tae have a Plan B or L as I called it should this phony walk away mid stream it was Lenny that was lined up.

Don’t think that his appointment was a last minute deal; this has been in place since last summer, IMHO, and this is based on the knowledge that PL runs the SPL while the 3rd knuckle shakers are in charge at hunden hence mcurine getting the national team position from his brither after issuing the distress call.

Might sound fanciful but the John McGinn failed transfer might have been built intae the “tappin” of Lenny and come January when it was felt that sneaky was heading out the door especially after his capitulation at hades Lenny suddenly had a falling out at Easter Road where the CEO still has his framed photie on her desk.

The people who run our club urnae daft, billionaires don’t become that without being smart and ruthless, we have no rag and bone men or kid on accountants watching over our great club and Lenny’s appointment was not made hastily, I honestly believe as well that there were certain caveats put in place before it was finalised and they materialised when French Eddy did a Henke for the winning goal.

Finally for those that want tae call him a Hibbee reject he seemed tae have the cake eater, mcmurky, bigot nichol, slippy and fraudgers number in most games against them. And I know this will not go down well in the southern hemisphere but he also gave us the triple POY 2019.

  18. Whilst Neil Francis Lennon would not have been my choice

He will get my full 100% backing

I just Pray that he now receives the exact same from who have appointed him

My own thoughts, he now needs to select his own, and very different professional back room team

Let Neil head this up, and those he picks delivèr on the squad training – same philosophy through full club.

A fresh approaçh to coaching and scouting players is required

    We have

De Vries, Gamboa, Izaguirre, Boyata, Lustig and Allen all out of contract

Benkovic, Toljan, Weah and Burke. Loan deals expiring

This already frees up huge funds controversy here

Would accept bids for the hugely inconsistent Ntcham, although there is player there

    Sinclair as per Ntcham

And for me James Forrest, so inconsistent it’s frightening he got player of year, non existent yesterday against a 16 year old full back

Another point, I would take Souttar before McKenna if buying Scottish

Oh – 1 other point, anyone aware of 2 seats being available in Club Celtic, let me know, looking to get seats in 204 – 206 if pòssible

It is not a void analogy. There was a senior position vacant within the business. The board did not, at its own admission, follow business protocol and look to recruit the best possible candidate to enhance the business thereby failing the Celtic shareholders regardless if one of the applicants was a former incumbent.

Quotes the 50th Anniversary Book on the Lisbon Lions by Paul Cuddihy on one of my favourite players,

‘In it Charlie Gallagher speaks of how his wife would say to him “you’ve played football for Celtic for years and you’re just known for two corner kicks – the 1965 Final corner for Billy’s header to score AND the last minute corner for the same man to head the winner against Vojvodina in the European Cup quarter final 2nd leg at Celtic Park.”

There is more to Charlie than that. From January 1968, Celtic trailed (oldco) Rangers in the League Championship. They then went on an amazing run (unbeaten I think) and eventually won the League on the penultimate day (Tommy Gemmell vying to do a PC Lustig at the last-minute, winning goal against Morton). One key feature of this run was that Charlie Gallagher had replaced Bertie Auld and was outstanding in that run.

Well remembered for two penalties, delivering three-in-a-row and being an all-round great Celt.

Perhaps using a junior manager was a poor example. However what I said was that ALL applications would be assessed and critiqued along with the person in the interim position and that invariably a better qualified and more experienced candidate was appointed.

Now we didn’t do that did we. Lenny was the only candidate for a senior position within a company with a turnover of over £100 mill a year. We didn’t even speak to anyone else. As I said even if Moyes, Rafa, or Jose wanted the gig they would have been wasting their time applying. Celtic A well run business – me Irish Ass.
