Quantcast

A kind of transubstantiation

840

Bobby Clark was the first Aberdeen goalkeeper I knew.  He was thought of highly, until Jim Leighton and colleagues stepped the performance levels up a pace at Aberdeen.  He has two places in the history books, one for the longest period not to concede a goal in Scottish league football, which when established in 1971 was also the European record.  He was also the first goalkeeper in European competition to face a penalty in a penalty kick competition.

Back in the dark days of the late 90s I had a Celtic mug with the message ‘Records can be broken but history can never be changed: Celtic, first British team to win the European Cup, 1967’.  Bobby Clark lost his European record within months and at Tynecastle next week Fraser Forster can break his Scottish record.  Bobby’s place as first to face a penalty competition is his in perpetuity.

Records are harder to break than they should be.  People get nervous when they approach, but it will be enormously satisfying if Celtic can sail through 31 minutes at Tynecastle without conceding.

Back in 2011 and early 2012 practically the entire CQN community was discussing Rangers impending insolvency event as an absolute certainty, but we’ve never been the most impartial community.  It was not until Daily Record journos stopped applying to Our Hero for a job and suggested ‘this excrement is about to get real’ that the penny dropped in many places.

This included portions of the Celtic support, who responded to the ‘news’ with a Congo line at Inverness, at the same time forever changing the substance of jelly and ice cream; a kind of transubstantiation, if you like.  This was no longer a sweet, it is nourishment for the ages.

Now the same newspaper has been authorised to run a story that there is doubt over this month’s payroll – would they dare suggest as much without authorisation?  When your friends are telling you they can hear the bell toll, you know where this is heading.

Entry Island had me in tears. Not hard to do these days.

I said to Meghan the other day that I thought Stornoway was an Island FFS.

  2. Hamilton Tim, no the reason for posting was even more prosaic than your suggestion. Why should it get a reaction? I made no allegations. I said nothing controversial. The journalist did. Forums are a strange place at times.

What’s your opinion on what could happen if Sevco do go down the vol Liquidation route, could SPFL take the same stance as SFL did with Livingston in 2009?

    ==============

Ask the easy ones why don’t you :)

I had to check Livi’s fate and Wiki says

Despite the prospective new owners ensuring that Livingston’s future as a professional football club would be secure for the next year at least by paying a £720,000 bond to the SFL,[69] on 5 August 2009 the Scottish Football League took the unprecedented move to demote Livingston to the Third Division. A breach of rules on insolvency was the main reason behind the decision

Now I would have to know what factors played a part in the league reaching that decision to know if parallels exist but the fact it was unprecedented makes it a precedent so if you have the Livi details it might be an issue to highlight.

I think the counter argument will be that the leagues brought in a more severe points deduction rule and that is what the SPFL would have to apply but as SFTB (I think pointed out) that would not have the desired effect of stopping a club benefitting from its financial approach to buying success.

The more I type the more I think you might be on to something.

Why not ask the question on TSFM but with the reasons why the SFL took an unprecedented step in Livi’s case and identify the parallels if any.

The veracity of the information was never the problem for anyone who was interested running the story.

The fact that the police have now said they have no objections has now shifted the legal balance in favour of those journalists but how that manifests itself remains to be seen.

Still, it’s the plug well and truly out of the genie’s bottle

Not sure if Jock Stein played a full team of Catholics but UCD are a team who play in the League of Ireland which gives players the chance to combine senior football with the opportunity to earn a college degree. If the players would stop letting off pyro during the match they might get somewhere.

Seems as if JF has pissed off the knuckle draggers on FF. Perhaps TD and FF can form a united front against those pesky uni types. Down with that type of thing.

Can an timfiltrator please post on FF saying that one has to have a modicum of intelligence to gain entry to uni and obviously that in itself is an insurmountable obstacle to the overwhelming majority of the sons of William who dream of attaining a tertiary education qualification. They can of course revert to the tried and tested postal correspondence education system from an American theological institute and ‘buy’ themselves a doctorate in anti-popery – sorry I meant theology.

Thanks for the reply, I’m currently trying to find the SFL’s reasoning for the decision. I’m currently banned from TSFM for calling the mods “worse than the Stasi” so that route is out for me lol.

    Great.

Mrs Tally is in the process of applying for a hypnotherapy course – “look into my eyes” – at Strathclyde.

I’m going to try and talk her into joining the Uni CSC, but she disnae like fitba!

  20. I’m not sure I follow the thread whereby a pheonix club arising out of an ongoing liquidation (BDO are still liquidators aren’t they?) are then liquidated before their former self was liquidated.

I think it is a bit like Pat Nevin’s second hand, unheard evidence of reports by an unkown person of Celtic fans singing unspecified sectarian songs at locations unknown. Yes I think we could be in for another world record for The Rangers.

Perhaps Elbows meant they were going for a treble of liquidations?

  21. Tonydonnelly67

Even if it’s true I don’t think that he was the only manager to have fielded an all RC team. I seem to recall that hibs or perhaps the old Dundee Harp had a policy of only signing RC players. Haven’t time to post any links and anyway I could be wrong. Again. ;-)

How are we defining a ‘Catholic’? History shows us that the term can be very, very loosely defined in Scottish football.
